Someone else pointed out that this accessory should be in the box with your camera and lens. That being said, it's a nice piece to add to your lens.

This hood is a good product for the 18-55 VR - it serves multiple purposes of course, aiding in flare prevention and lens protection. Easy to get on and off. Only qualm is it feels somewhat flimsy. Very thin plastic.

I have had one of these on my camera for awhile. During a visit to San Francisco, I was showing the camera to a young lady and one of the springs came off in her hand. Apparently the hood was separating where the two parts join to enclose the springs.
This is in contrast to the aluminum screw-on lens hood on the 24mm lens on my Nikon FM, which has suffered plenty of dings over the years, but always held firm.
I'll order another HB-45 because I need it, but compared to classic Nikon stuff, it's just not rugged at all.

Kind of expensive for such a small piece of plastic. But it works and stores right on the lens by simply turning it around and snapping it on the lens. Works equally well when putting it on the lens to avoid glare, it snaps on and off with ease. I guess something that works that well is worth the money, something you come to expect from Nikon.

Nikon discontinued the original HB-33 hood almost immediately and you could not find one anywhere but overseas. I like a hood for every lens and was disappointed that none came with my lens. Finally Nikon released a replacement and was it worth waiting for? I should expect that Nikon will now make all there hoods the way they did this one. All other hoods for other lenses rotated for snap to lock and squeeze/click to release which took some force on occasion. Sometimes more that it thought it should. This new HB-45 hood has a type of magical connection, it needs no alignment, you simply place the hood to the lens and it's as if hundreds of little fingers all around the rim pull itself unto the lens. Presto; it's securely in place! As simple to put on is as easy to remove, a slight squeeze and its removed. And this will sound corny, it couldn't be easier. True.

What can I say, it snaps on the lens and you squeeze a couple of buttons and it comes off. It has never fallen off. I didn't think it would do much because it is so short, but it is just long enough to shade the lens like it was designed to do.

This is pretty much the only plastic option in terms of a hood for the 18-55mm VR. Does it's job. If for some reason you wanted to use the built in flash while using this hood you will get a shadow in your shot.
