Comments about FM Photography Shutter Hat Camera Cover:

This "raincoat" is perfect for covering my D80 when I'm shooting in the snow or in the drizzle. It's made with nylon and has two overlapping pockets on the inside big enough for lens caps, batteries, etc.The nylon is preferred over the clear plastic type cover (Which I used before getting this one) because with plastic I got condensation. I had a little trouble figuring out how to get it on the first time. It comes with a couple of illustrations but that’s all. Actually it's pretty easy and a snap after the first time. When I was looking around for a cover, one of the websites displayed a picture of the Shutter Hat with a flash attached. I thought the hat would have two openings, one for viewfinder and one for flash. When I received it there was only one opening. That's because there are three ways to put the Shutter Hat on. Inside the cover are two hard rubber " flash-shoe mounts". You slide the front one on the camera's flash shoe and that keeps the Shutter Hat from slipping around. This is supposed to be for shorter lenses but I can still use my 70-300mm VR by putting some Velcro on each side and to the rear end of my lens shade. Shutter Hat comes with two 1/2 in. Velcro discs. I put these on each side toward the front of the lens hood of my 18-135mm lens. Then you wrap the front Velroed part of the cover around the lens barrel, or in my case the lens shade which I think is better. (You'll have to get some more Velcro at the fabric store if you plan on using it on more than one lens). The opening is now right over your viewfinder and you can Velcro it open or shut. You have a little hooded area over the back of the camera that comes out about 4 in. which actually works pretty well as light blocker for better viewing of your display. Now, if you slide in the rear rubber "shoe mount" into your camera's hot shoe, Your adding another 3 in. over the front area. which means it would cover an 11 in. lens. (The literature claims up to an 8 in. lens but my 70-300 is 8 in. when extended to 300. ( not counting the lens hood). But now you only have about an inch over the back of the camera. (on my D80). Although the sides still drape down about 8 in below the camera. The third way to put the Shutter Hat on is by placing the "one" viewfinder opening over your hot shoe. Then your mounted flash holds the Shutter Hat in place. The Shutter Hat comes with zippered storage pouch about 4"x7" and with a clip if you want to clip it to your bag, pants or whatever. I read somewhere in my searching that Shutter Hat comes in 3 sizes, But I've only seen the medium for sale.A few things I'd like to see: Include a couple more Valcro discs for a second lens. 25 cents more.A clear window for the top display of many of the DSLR's out there.Offer it in como and white color. Why white. For the photographer who shoots in hot sunny regions. Where a black camera can bake to death in the hot sun, and black bags become furnaces. The white version would probably be better served in a different cloth material , maybe [@]

Comments about FM Photography Shutter Hat Camera Cover:

Coincidental to my receiving the Shutter Hat, the rain has stopped--perhaps that should be included as a pro. The manufacturer leaves you pretty much on your own to figure out how to attach the Shutter Hat--just a couple of pictures and a list of features--no real instructions. Not being mechanically inclined, the installation was NOT intuitive for me. Nevertheless, I persevered and got it correctly attached. Now it seems relatively easy, but I would still recommend improved documentation to the manufacturer. The Shutter Hat comes in a nylon bag with a swivel-clip--easy to carry and very light. It covers my camera well; I look forward to field testing it in the rain. I will update this review when the rains return.
