The FastenR3 is a much stronger and more secure upgrade to the original FastenR2. I don't know of any first hand failures with the R2, but the peace of mind that I get with the new R3 is well worth the upgrade. The rubber washer secures the connector quite solidly. I own 2 of these and after using them for 2 weddings and 3 other shoots, they haven't budged on either my D300 or 80-200 mounts.
