The strap provides confident support when carrying camera and security when looped once around left wrist when hand-holding camera. I like to remove the strap when camera is on a stand in my studio so it won't tangle or loosen PC and remote release cords. I added clips to the ends of the strap to make removal/attachment quick and easy - it would have been nice if Nikon provided them.
