I use the Long Lens case to transport my 400 f2.8 in a backpack on wild life shoots. It is large enough to hold the 2x teleconverter I frequently use and the rails for the really right pano head I customarily use with the big lens.
Space wise, it could have been smaller if it was round and would enable me to get something besides it at that level in my back pack.
It is heavier than it needs to be but lighter than the competition that I could find.
