Comments about Nikon Nikon Capture NX Software, Photo Editing Software for Macintosh & Windows.:

I have been working as a "fine artist" for almost 40 years, specialising in oil painting, and have done some print and web design on the side. As a young man I used to be what you would call an amateur photographer (black and white, darkroom fun!) but had to call it off due to family responsibilities. Recently (for my 60th birthday) my children gave me a Nikon D60 (sic!) as a present, and I started dabbling with photographing again. I have for years been using Photoshop on and off for my design work, and started out by working via Bridge, Photoshop, Camera Raw and plug-ins (Pixelgenius PhotKit mainly). And I had a look at alternatives, Iphoto obviously as it is free, and Aperture.
Then I discovered Nikon FX.
I can't say much about speed, stability, features, workflow, and things that obviously are of interest to professional users - i have only been using a demo for about a week (and by the way - it is stable and works fine). But I can tell you this:
I have NEVER seen a program that gives me anything like this kind of freedom when it comes to handling photographs as if they were paintings- the "control point" idea should be awarded a Nobel prize for digital photography.
In a painting I can change everything (more or less) as I work on it. In a photograph the original image is always there. But with Nikon FX I can manipulate the colors, the tones, the focus, the sharpness, the "balance" of the picture, and in a VERY intuitive way, and in a way that I cannot do in any other image editing program that I know of.
I do not claim to know all available programs, and I leave it to others to give advice on technical issues, professional features etc., but if you are someone with a (more or less) fine arts background, I believe you will find a kind of artistic freedom in Nikon FX that no other image editing program (at present) will give you.
(OK - as far as I know:-) But the trial is free for 60 days, so you can check for yourself.)

Comments about Nikon Nikon Capture NX Software, Photo Editing Software for Macintosh & Windows.:

I use NX with my Nikon D80. I find that it is fairly easy to learn. I've yet to figure out the "Batch" processing. I've never had this crash, and it runs as fast as I could want. I guess it all depends if you have a computer that's made for working with photos. I have a 2 gig ram and a 2 gig cpu. I was just working on wedding photos and have no complaint. After doing all that I could do with this program, I save the pics to the hard drive and then go to Photoshop elements for red eye and other touchup work. The only problem is the cost. For what this program does compared to Photoshop, Nikon needs to drop the price to about half of what they are selling it for. NX does better at handling raw files, but Photoshop is much better at most anything else. Overall, I don't think you can find a better program for raw files.

Comments about Nikon Nikon Capture NX Software, Photo Editing Software for Macintosh & Windows.:

I bought my D300 Nikon and it came with a 30 day trial NX software of the Capture DX software I liked. Before I ordered it I shopped around and got a better price than through Nikon via Amazon and Adorama.

Comments about Nikon Nikon Capture NX Software, Photo Editing Software for Macintosh & Windows.:

All Nikon softwares have a tendency to crash. "Nikon View" and "Capture 4.4.2" were somewhat close to perfection but Nikon stopped devaloping these softwares and got involved into creating new trash Capture NX. This is one of the slowest and most unreliable software I have ever used. Even 1.3 built is far below expectations. Nikon just added one more trash "View NX" to its new trash series of softwares. This whole NX series is good for ametures not at all for professionals. The support team can not do any thing about the problems and development team does not care about listening to users or they only listen to their pet users. I tried a lot to communicate with Nikon but ended into giving up. Nikon should let some other software development team fix or recreate these softwares.

Comments about Nikon Nikon Capture NX Software, Photo Editing Software for Macintosh & Windows.:

Having bought Capture NX v1.0 [$] from a Brussels camera shop in January 2007, I was astounded by the quality of colour rendition and degree of detail that Capture NX could extract from the NEF files generated by my D200. Image quality exceeded other RAW processors I had tried (Adobe Raw v3.3 and later, Capture One v3.5 and later). And image quality was head-and-shoulders above that of the JPEGs I had taken simultaneously with the RAW files. But it was glacially slow on my 1GB RAM PC. Some months later, with an upgrade to 1.5GB RAM and update of Capture NX to v1.2, I found processing speed much improved and it has again become my RAW processor of choice.Of course, it's more than a RAW processor and its unique U-point technology makes it a rival for Photoshop as a manipulation program for TIFFs and JPEGs (from camera makers other than Nikon too). Personally, I find the U-point technology quirky to use and stick to Photoshop CS2/Elements 6.0 although I appreciate other reviewers here have different opinions. In summary, the best software available to process Nikon NEF files. And, if you like it, a rival to Photoshop too.

Great Program but a few Annoyances
By Roger for NikonVerified Purchaser from Wash DC on 9/26/2007

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments about Nikon Nikon Capture NX Software, Photo Editing Software for Macintosh & Windows.:

Great program for Nikon Raw users in terms of producing high quality images, but it does have a few quirks with regards to workflow and slower than desired batch processing. I really like this program but use it on critical work vs. processing high volume (wedding) work

Capture a MUST for NEF workflow
By nojusticeVerified Reviewer from Suffolk, VA on 4/16/2007
Pros:
Easy to Use, Versatile
Best Uses:
Business, Home
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Nikon Nikon Capture NX Software, Photo Editing Software for Macintosh & Windows.:

(I own the 1.1 version) Truly the best product on the market for Nikon's proprietary NEF format RAW file. Exceptional color and exposure control, simple yet vast control with U-point technology, and an fairly intuitive interface. Easily the best results with NEFs, hands down - if it had a clone function, I wouldn't need Photoshop.

It is a bit slow even with a ton of RAM, it crashes occasionally, and needs serious improvement over the file browser functions.

By gadyfVerified Purchaser from Isral on 2/13/2007
Pros:
Easy to Use
Cons:
Slow some time crashes, Unreliable
Best Uses:
Home
Bottom Line:

Comments about Nikon Nikon Capture NX Software, Photo Editing Software for Macintosh & Windows.:

This a nice software but slow and require a modern hi speed PC with lots of memory , some time it crashes, I would not reccoment the current version BUT I read that Nikon are going to make vast changes and go with a new upgrade - I assume Nikon listened and repaired the issues so if the new one works fine I will reccoend it .

Comments about Nikon Nikon Capture NX Software, Photo Editing Software for Macintosh & Windows.:

Control points - individual control points enable this program to save many a photograph when you only have the time to "point & shoot" with whatever the camera settings are. I use it and Bibble Pro with Noise Ninja to edit to produce and print my photos.
