This item performed without a hitch for the first four or five (80 slide) trays and sat unused for a couple of years. Then it was used to convert 12-15 (80 slide) trays and worked excellently. I then started working on a 11 tray (140 slide) project and began having problems on the seventh tray. For some unknown reason, it would stop in the middle of a scan after 12-15 slides and the scanner and program would have to be closed and restarted. This happened on an irregular basis, adding a lot of time to the project.
Despite the problem, I am considering buying another as it is easy to install and use, and it produces quality scans at any dpi setting.

I have scanned ZERO quality images from this scanner. It doesn't work with any imaging software. I e-mailed Pacific Image and got NO RESPONSE. I downloaded the latest drivers from their site. I searched message boards. I found many people with the same problem but no solutions. I wanted a small scanner to scan images while my son was in the hospital. By the time we got out of the hospital, the warranty had expired. I finally had time to try to troubleshoot it and consult with experts only to find it futile. I have windows XP so it isn't even a Vista issue. Wasted money, wasted time.

Having a large inventory of images on 35mm transperancies and negatives from over nearly 30 years of fine art and theater portfolio work, I was looking for a simple way to produce high resolution digital scans.
The 3600U was easy to set-up and the software was very intuitive. The scan time was very fast and images were very good. Some required "dust" removal but this is not the fault of the unit.
It takes a few tries to get slides/negatives lined up properly at first, but then once understood it is very easy.
Very good color and resolution even at some of the lower res settings.

Bought this item in hopes of getting through the
conversion of 4000 negatives and slides. I have spent nearly 3 days attempting to get through just 2 rolls. After every few scans the machine gets sensitive and "encounters a problem with windows and of course must shut down". Not exactly what I expected for a machine that has
purportedly so much capability. Shall I keep it, I will finish my project sometime in 2009. Not quite an acceptable timeline for me!!!!!

I was initially impressed(yesterday) that it actually converted a negative to a jpeg...wow!!!. So I decided to do some rolls (24/roll). Halfway through the 1st roll, an error popped up: (PfsLoader.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.)I rebooted the PC and was able to complete the roll. On the second roll I got 5 or 6 scans done and the error consistently popped up and wouldn't go away (rebooted, shut down...). Tried the scanner on another PC ... same error, so no more scans.I was going to call Pacific Image today but decided to re-try it on another PC, and it worked (WHAT THE {profanity}!!!!!!!!!!).So most likely the scanner overheats and start getting these errors trying to make me think it was software incompatibility, but really it's the scanner.I did some searching and this error seems common for pacific image products. In one forum [...] a pacific image employee[...] states that 99% of the scanner they receive back have no fault found, and work perfectly, that is when the above error was the cause. So if you want to buy a Pacific Image scanner only scan one roll of negatives per day, and make sure you turn it off after use so it can re-gain it's sanity. For me returning this product will be too expensive. I will check with [...] what the return policy is like though. (shipping charges may veto the return though)
