Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 270EX, Flash for EOS (SLR) Camera Systems with Guide Number of 89 Feet / 27m at ISO 100:
I'm not a huge flash enthusiast. I much prefer using natural light and just increasing the ISO to get my results. However, there *are* times when at least a small flash is preferable over no flash at all. Which is why I purchased this particular product. I trust the brand name and it's really the smallest hot-shoe flash I have seen that is adjustable. I used it for a wedding reception recently and was pleasantly surprised at its output. It's quick to recycle and the results are not harsh at all. Granted, it doesn't reach as far back as one of the larger, more powerful flashes, but it absolutely suited my purposes. Plus, it's light, and small enough that it's easy to pack away and carry around. I have small hands, and the lightweight nature of this flash comes in really handy when attached to my camera. It's a nice overal flash.

Just learning photography and didn't want to spend alot on a flash as I don't take alot of pictures inside. but I needed something for the times I do. This was perfect. simple, able to bounce flash, limited as to what you can do nothing fancy here. but as long as your not in some huge room it is effective. I have been able to get some pretty good shots inside. works great with my canon xsi.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 270EX, Flash for EOS (SLR) Camera Systems with Guide Number of 89 Feet / 27m at ISO 100:
Honestly, I have no complaints about this small flash -- it fills its exact purpose. However, my recommendation is to invest in the next level up (430EX) and here is why:1) For fill flash and generally adding incremental light to outdoor photography, this fits the bill. However, so does the pop-up and they are same relative strength.2) For indoor shots where you aren't going to bounce, the low-dollar generic "pop-up diffuser" from [@] and your built-in will more that suffice. The 270 doesn't really add any noticeable shutter speed beyond the 1/200th of the built in anyways. Puffer and pop-up work just great.3) Bouncing the flash off the ceiling -- well, it's OK. It tilts up for the bounce perfectly. Reasonable strength and the metering is almost automatic. My problem begins when you rotate to take a vertical shot -- uh oh, no swivel -- gotta bounce off the wall now. If you've got any paint other than a light neutral color, the lighting effect is going to be really funky. I think our human eyes can handle cascading light as long as it is coming in from a vertical (kindof like overhead sunlight). Brightness on one particular side of your subject just looks strange. Combine that with other colors than white -- its terrible. So I tried to get around the no swivel using cheap solutions -- first a hand-held mirror, then a remote flash shoe. Mirror was OK, but direct light would always creep around the edges and overexpose in spots. Even though I could handhold the flash with the remote flash trigger, it would fire at 100% and wash-out my shot unless I manually set the ISO to 100. Unlike the next step models, the 270EX has no exposure setting button on the flash -- it's all controlled by the camera menus. I havent seen any cheap remote triggers that support the 4 prong communications -- they seem to only support the one main firing prong. Might be able to use a sync-cord and handhold the flash, but I am not investing another $30 to give it a shot.So with cheapie solutions as a NO-GO, I am swapping out for the 430EX. If you've got the money, I recommend doing the same. If you really got the itch for the cheap bounce-flash, grab the little SUNPAK one instead. That should save you about eighty bucks until you can buy the middle daddy.

Initially I bought the Canon Speedlite 270EX for SX10is, but end up used it with Canon XS DSLR. It'smuch better than built-in flash, good for small room.

I was really surprised when I opened the box and found such a small flash with the quality of construction and flash power of this small unit. The match is perfect for the G11. Perfect balance, Not top heavy.Provides excellent bounce flash in a standard living room.I can easily carry it in just a small corner, of my camera case.Long battery life with rechargeable batteries.I guess you can see I am very happy. Thanks Canon for a great product [...].

The 270EX has been a great addition to my Canon XTi. It really helps fill in the room shadows. I am now able to take decent photos with my 28-105mm lens. I was able to take over 180 photos on Christmas morning with it; and the batteries (NIMH) were still going at it.

Nice flash that doesn't overwhelm my G10. It gives better coverage than the built in flash- but not as bulky as my MecaBlitz when mounted on the hot shoe. Excellent for this purpose!

This unit should not be considered an all-around flash for a DSLR. It is not powerful enough for general use, it projects a shadow when I use my 17-55mm f/2.8 lens with lenshood attached and it can only tilt but, cannot rotate.
However, it is a great little flash for fill light in relatively close portraits. I like to use fill flash in a majority of my images which lend themselves to fill. With its light weight and small profile, I just leave it on the camera and turn it on and off as I need it.
I shoot most of my informal portraits using a 70-200mm f/4L IS lens on a Canon 40D camera. The little 270EX provides enough light to fill the faces and improve the looks of the images. I usually have the flash set at -2 stops exposure compensation.
The 270EX recycles extremely fast using Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable AA batteries and I can usually shoot in burst mode for three shots with the recycle keeping up with the camera. This is also due to the -2 stop exposure compensation.
I have solved the problem of lack of rotation and the shadow from the lens hood at the bottom of my image by using a Joe Demb Flip-It Junior diffuser reflector. The Flip-It Junior fits the 270EX quite well and provides decent lighting in small areas (you are not going to light a stadium with this little flash). It also removes the problem of shadow from the lens hood and gives fairly decent bounce lighting when the camera is in the vertical position.
I don't think that a Stofen could match the Flip-It in versatility. I also think that you would lose a fair amount of light and have problems with the camera in the vertical position.

Probably the sweet spot as to value for the dollar. would be better if it had swivel, a little slow on recycle after about 3 shots; otherwise works well with canon cameras in auto or manual modes. Adorama package is well balanced and Sto-fen Omni Bounce compensates somewhat for lack of flex.

This little flash is perfect for photographing at night to light up your subject or as a good little fill flash to knock out those pesky dark shadows. I use for photographing accident scenes at night and it does an outstanding job!

More powerful flash than the internal flash for instances needing additional light. Perfect small size to carry and mount on the Canon G7-G10 cameras. Head doesn't swivel sideways but this is a compromise between it and more expensive and versatile siblings. Adjustable coverage great for group shots at varying distances from camera.

I am totally amazed at the fast recycle time of this very light and versatile flash. Even in the sports mode at 3.4 frames per second, this little flash can hold its own.
Excellent is an understatement.

With its ability to control its output through the camera and its small size and lightweight, this is a great flash for use on macro flash brackets such as those made by Wimberley and Really Right Stuff.
