I use this on my little DSLR when I don't want to get the big boy out. This on camera flash diffuser comes in handy when traveling light and you don't want to carry your big flash. It really diffuses the flash and makes it nice and soft. Eliminates red eye also which can be really bad with the pop up flash. You just have to be careful when carrying the camera around to not pop it off.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
The product in theory is good but it is too poorly constructed to last for long so essentially it could be considered disposable. After mounting it a couple times the cheap and thin plastic that's inserted into the hot shoe snapped. Pity, but it's not worth the effort or expense to return it. Landfilled.Don't waste your time!
Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
The Gary Fong Puffer is an absolute great idea. There are several light modifiers on the market, they are typically bulky or fairly large to mount on a flash. I use a Canon 5D as my main camera, but keep a 30D as my back-up. Everybody knows how limited a pop up flash can be, but I have to tell you when I put the puffer on my 30D I keep the flash up all the time. The Puffer spreads the existing flash output in an equal balance, and it makes for a softer light rather than the standard harsh light of a flash. It is small and compact that you can take it along in just about any camera case. If your have a pop up flash this is a key item to add to your accessory pack.
Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
I really like the effect of the Puffer (less harsh edges, softens the flash effect) for indoor photos. I did find it a bit hard to use though as it doesn't easily slip into the hot shoe all the way and can then get in the way of the flash popping up sometimes. Overall a useful gadget and definitely right for the price! It also disassembles easily for transporting in the gear bag.

I used this pop up flash disffuser this past Easter. I'd ended up with perfect photos one by one they were perfect.
Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
I've never liked any photos I've taken in the house with my camera's onboard flash. The Gary Fong "Puffer" has changed that. It's great when I don't need, or want, to use my speedlight just for the sake of bouncing the flash.
Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
I bought this for a friend and liked it so much I bought one for myself. It works!
Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
I am documenting children and families affected/infected by HIV/AIDS in India, often under adverse lighting conditions in rural villages and urban slums. The Puffer, pop up flash diffuser is very helpful in "softening" many of these images.
Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
The Gary Fong Puffer is a must for all. It makes your pop up flash a lot less harsher and your pictures will come out so much better. Its great if your on a budget and can't afford a speed light, but also great if you have a speed light but don't want to shlep it around.

It does help with the stock flash but nothing beats a external flash unit.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
I shoot a lot of bands in very low light conditions and this diffuser is great for capturing movement and expressions without a lot of harsh shadows. I carry it with me everywhere and leave the external flash behind on most of my live band shoots.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
The puffer is a life saver when your doing close up shots and have none of your equipment with you. I shot some really close up photos of my brother while he was driving and you can't really tell that I use a flash, It makes the colors of people look as thy normally are. I like it because i can put it in my poket or camera bag. It's plastic contruction makes it lightweight, BUT I really wish it were a bit more stronger, but for the money you pay It's perfect.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
You can achieve the same results as this diffuser by lowering your flash -1EV. I took multiple photos of the same subject with/without this device and if I manually set the camera to -1EV the photos turned out identical.
Also, this does not fit Nikon camera which is why you read about people breaking it. You need to take a razor and shave off some of the plastic to make it fit into the hotshoe.
Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
Works just like advertised. Really softens those closeups and portrait shots. No more overexposed shots. Use it to shoot my newborn and can use flash from inches away and come away with perfect, natural looking light.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
I have the Gary Fong lightsphere and absolutely love it. I bought several Puffers for friends & family to use with their camera pop up flashes. It does improve the picture. The flash is softer and red- eye is greatly reduced but not eliminated. The flash in potrait shots is diffused so the lighting is more natural and flattering. The puffer does eliminate most of the harsh light from the flash. It is pretty compact and comes apart to take less room in the camera bag. It doesn't snap together easily. I guess that is my biggest disappointment with the product.
Overall, using a external flash works much better. But, if you need to use the popup flash on your SLR, the puffer does give you a softer, more flattering light.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
The first time I put it on my D200, the mounting base broke in two!!!! I knew from previous reviews this could happened so I was very careful. Didn't matter... I applied very little pressure but it just snapped. It still works ( but you have to carefully align the 2 pieces) and does what it says it will do for the flash, but there is a definite design flaw... For the money I expected something a little better!!!! If it didn't break I'd give it 4 stars....
Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
I use for close ups of silver and china for sale on line. Flash is necessary but creates over exposure and reflections. This cheap gadget reduces exposure as well as diffusing the light, which is what I need in the situation. I have a flash gun with swivel head. I could mount it, turn it for indirect light and maybe mount a diffuser on it. Or mount the puffer on the camera and shoot. Does what it says and saves time.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
Good idea, took a few photos with good results with my Nikon D60. But the thing broke the very first time I took it out of the camera. Maybe defective materials or the bridge part needs to be re-engineered. The people at Adorama responded promptly so I had the opportunity of sampling their customer service, 10 points there.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
Took it out of the package and slid the mount onto the hot shoe. It split in the middle before it was halfway on. The mount is exceptionally weak at the portion that slides onto the hot shoe. The plastic appears to be brittle and only has about 1/4" of plastic in the center that holds the two sides together . I don't see how this product can be durable enough for frequent use or as for me the first use.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
I can't understand the previous negative review. Of course cutting the light output will change exposure! My pop-up flash overrides any ambient, natural light but with this quick attachment I can get much closer without blowing-out the whole thing with an overly-white light.
I understand enough about my DSLR to know I may have to compensate my aperture and shutter speed to get EXACTLY the same exposure as without, but WITH the PUFFER the lighting is much warmer and pleasant. I will use this every time I plan on using my built-in flash.
Perhaps the previous complainer has not actually TRIED the PUFFER but only examined the before-after pics mentioned.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
Check it out. "Soft" light comes from a relationship between the size of the light source and the size of the subject. Unless you are shooting subjects that are smaller than your thumb, this does NOT produce soft light. It is not flattering. You know what the difference is between all the "before" and "after" photos with this piece of garbage? Exposure! The after shots are less exposed than the before shots! Dear photographers... PLEASE take some time to learn the craft. GF INC is selling you snake oil and if you don't know better you'll keep buying into it.

Now I see why everyone rates this so highly. Immediately loved it; in fact, I'm sort of using it for a wireless trigger of the studio strobe since the pop-up is so well diffused now it won't add glare. Great for casual hand held shots.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
This is the flash modifier to get if you have a pop up flash on your dslr. It won't replace a dedicated flash unit. It does moderate and diffuse the pop up flash very well. I use this when I need a flash quickly, and don't have time to pull out my dedicated slave. Works simply and perfectly to smooth out the harsh popup light. Bounce flash is better, but for that you need a dedicated unit or a different pop up modifier.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
The "Puffer" is a tool that anybody & everybody would find easy to use & very effective with a camera that has a pop-up flash. Using the "Puffer" vitually eliminates the need for me to edit & touchup my photos. When I use the "Puffer" my photos are much more realistic, the tones & colors are much more accurate. People have a much more flattering complexion because the flash is diffused and therefore it doesn't cause that shiney bleached out look.
I would highly recommend this product to anyone!
The "Puffer" is an asset to anybody who takes pictures!

I'm used to traveling with a lot of gear but the Puffer has made it very easy to just grab a camera and go. I don't have to hassle with a bunch of equipment to make my pictures look good.
Honestly, I haven't had a blown out image since I put this on my camera. I use it every time I fire the flash.

Comments about Gary Fong Gary Fong The Puffer, Pop-up Flash Diffuser:
I am a travel photographer and needed something that would soften the harsh, direct flash lighting and is super portable. This fits in a pocket or pouch. It works great for outdoors since the adjustable flap actually makes the size of the light source larger. It is important to push the mounting unit in all the way, there are two clicks - if you stop at the first indentation, the unit can break. You need to push it in all the way for a secure fit. Then it is rugged and sturdy.
