The Variable Friction Arm allows the positioning of equipment in what might otherwise be inconvenient or impossible places.
By attaching the arm to clamps (sold separately), the photographer is able to place equipment attached to poles, railings, door frames, edges of tables... basically anything you can clamp onto! Can be used for remote cameras, strobes, etc.
