I had the relatively uncreative task of photographing a house and its content inside and out. The job was easy having this flash working automatically with my new Nikon. The potential for more creative and advanced flash work is clear. I will be enjoying this area more now that I took the step to use this type of unit.

Great product. I have enjoyed learning the art of taking a great photograph and one of the lessons was use the right amount of flash. I knew that my pictures were lacking the right amount of flash so I turned to Adorama. Even with the great flash on the Nikon D90 I needed more. This flash has been recommended by many people and I can now see first hand why it has been so popular. The price point is great too.

I have used the SB-600 so far for outdoor fill flash and I have added it to my indoor studio portrait lighting system where I attach it to a light stand with a Photoflex mount and a 32" umbrella. The performance is excellent and it will recycle for me faster than advertised. With a few test shots and easy minor adjustments (powering up and down) it will provide flawless light. My batteries (NIMH) will run about 250 frames, so if you do long portrait sessions like me, have plenty of extra batteries on hand.

Now I have 3 of these. They are excellent! Very good to use off camera together with the build-in commander on the Nikon D70 -> D700 (+ all in between). I've got a D80.
It's very powerful, yet still a small unit. It cannot act as commander, but if you got a Nikon D70->D700 you can use the build-in flash as commander and save 50% on the larger and bulkier SB-900.
Highly recommendable!

For the price it's a good flash. Very helpful for indoor/outdoor shots to soften and lightly highlight shadows. The only con about the flash which was very disappointing to me is that I can't use it wirelessly with my Nikon D5000. For that to happen I need to spend more money which I wasn't looking to do right now.[...]

I bought it because I wanted to use it with my "old" F100 film camera.
The SB-600 will probably be the very last Nikon Flash to support the traditional TTL mode of film cameras. The bigger and heavier SB-900 doesn't.
If you shoot on film... you have no other choice !

For just over $200.00, Nikon's SB-600 serves as a great addition for an on or off camera lighting source. Right out of the box, the automatic mode syncs well and adjusts output based on your settings without more than turning it on. For when you are ready to get more creative, the addition of the SB900 or now discontinued SB-800 will allow remote flash use as part of Nikon's brilliant Creative Lighting System-CLS. Once I get a solid handle on this flash unit, I will indulge in gels and reflectors to gain a more professional look for my routine photographic purposes.

The SB-600 is a great flash. I used the Vivitar 283 for many years and the SB-600 is in the same league. I use it with a Nikon D300 and it works fine. I highly recommend this flash to anyone who uses the flash occasionally for indoor shots and portraits. It is very well made. I am very satisfied with the flash.

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-600 TTL AF Shoe Mount Speedlight, Guide Number at 35mm Zoom Head Position, 30/98 (ISO 100, m/ft), USA Warranty.:
To me, photography is about capturing and manipulating light. You can't do a whole hell of a lot with your fancy pro zoom if you don't have any light. I recently upgraded to a D90 from a D5000, and the SB-600 may well have been the most important purchase I've made. I would have missed so many shots (or had really harsh shadows) with the pop-up flash, but this let me bounce and fire away with stellar results. The single thing I'm not fond of is the power of it; it just doesn't seem to put out enough to illuminate dark outdoor shots from 25+ feet away. Of course, there are many variables that go into such a shot, and I *was* shooting with a slow zoom and low ISOs...but still. Didn't seem powerful enough with whatever power the camera set up in an auto mode.

I just purchased the SB600 and haven't used it much yet. What I found so far is that it looks like it will perform as advertised.
Most of my photography is indoor sport, dark arenas. I need the further reach of the SB600 to provide decent lighting to capture high speed action.
The rechargable batteries and charger work great. The diffuser (optional) pops off easily.
I recomend this product highly.

The SB-600 is a good flash for most occasions. I tend to use it with a Lightsphere diffuser for most shots and I get consistently great results out of it. The only thing to watch out for is battery life: as the batteries start to die, the output from the flash becomes erratic. Not really an issue, but it can be a little worrisome the first time it happens. Just pop in a fresh set and keep right on shooting.

Everything you need and nothing you don't. Works with every Nikon camera produced in the last 40 years. I've had the SB800 and I prefer the 600. It is smaller and lighter. And, it is less expensive. Period.

I assumed this flash would have a PC input, so I was disappointed to find out it didn't. You also need a commander or IR transmitter to remotely fire this flash (pop-up flash on low power doesn't cut it). I also wish the manual settings were a little more convenient to change. The recycle times are pretty good. All in all, this is a great choice for those than can't shell out the money for the top of the line products.

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-600 TTL AF Shoe Mount Speedlight, Guide Number at 35mm Zoom Head Position, 30/98 (ISO 100, m/ft), USA Warranty.:
I have used the same flash unit for almost 5 years on a D70 and now a D300s. It has always performed flawlessly. Recharge is reasonably quick, output is plentiful, and rarely if ever do I get incorrect exposures.
There is really no better choice for general-purpose flash photography, from beginner to advanced. For those less experienced, you will be amazed at the improvement in the light quality of your pictures over the built-in unit. You'd only need more power and features for studio work or very specialized applications.
The fact that this flash works with Nikon's superb Creative Lighting System only increases its usefulness. It would be nice if it had a built-in bounce card, but a piece of tape and a business card solves that easily enough. Its only other drawbacks (for some) is that it cannot act as a master flash in the CLS and cannot use an external battery pack to shorten recharge time. If you're looking for these features, though, chances are the SB-600 wouldn't be serving as your sole speedlight anyway.
The SB-600 is a flash that will always have a place in the photographer's bag, even as one's collection grows. It is, in my experience, perfectly reliable, simple to use, and produces great results.

I use this sb-600 most of the time, it's flash output is enough for my uses in weddings as it doesn't have such an overpowering flash output, and it's also light especially if you're carrying two pro bodies with a flash all day long. And if you want to use it off camera you can either get the su-800 or flash triggers from [...] as you wouldn't necessarily want a flash on your dslr such as the sb-800 or sb-900 as a master since you wanted an off camera flash in the first place. So for a small unit, it's uses are far more useful then most people think.

I purchased two of these at one time to use as remote units. I really wanted to purchase two SB-800's, but found out that Nikon stoped making them, and the replacement is the SB-900. I could not justify paying the high price of the SB-900's, so I decided to get the SB-600's instead. Good flash, but not as good as the SB-800. I wish the SB-600 had the built in bounce card like the SB-800.

Seems about right for a nikon component, feels solid and worthy. I have two older models and feel this I-TTl may be the worst to learn (directions/manual reading wise) of them all. I do love Nikons backward compatibility though.I have only tried it in balanced fill mode so far and have gotten mixed results on my D70 in a dark room. Will have to test on my F100 which I still prefer. I am sure it is a learning curve for now. I will have to play with the settings to find out what works best like any other.
"Kinda disappointed" that all the newer models in the last few years do not offer the smaller forward fill flash just above the hotshoe where the IR assist is now.
My old SB16 had this and I thought it was the best ever! I could have the main flash head up 90 degrees and the same unit would add some nice fill without being too overpowering.
Overall I feel I may have to get another one soon. These smaller units adn being so dang portable would be easier to tote around as opposed to main AC flash units. Wireless to boot!!

Although I have an excellent built in flash on my camera this accessory is a major step up. Having light coming from an additional source adds a considerable amount of depth to a photo and eliminates many unflattering shadows. I use the built in flash side-by-side with this slave and am really pleased with the improved results in my photos. Couldn't be any easier to use. Additional slaves would be really desireable but that of course drives up costs.

I have 3 of these flashes and have been using them for more than two years. I have had no problems at all with them. I use a SB-800 as a master to control the SB-600s off camera and keep them in off camera mode all the time. Despite their smaller cost, size, and weight they lose less than one stop from a SB-800/900 and recycle quickly. The downsides? not very important to me - no PC connection, can't be a master, and don't focus light as tight (without a cheap snoot). They are a bargain and a great flash.

This is the second SB-600 to just stop working on me. Nikon has had this one for over a month now on 'parts hold' with no clue as to when I'll get it back. I have a photoshoot in a few days and will have to run out and buy another flash, and I can guarantee it WON'T be a Nikon. I will save my money and buy good old workhorse Vivitar for less than half the price, and they are time tested and proven.
Nikon has had my $1,200.00 lens for over a month now too. Screw Nikon.

This flash packs tons of power and functionality in a compact form (relatively.)
Compare to SB-800, this flash is quicker to operate and lighter to carry, with only a slight reduce in output power and lack of more wireless control functions besides the basic. It also comes without a build-in bounce card, but that can be fixed by a simple D-I-Y.
It is designed to fit any shooting situations.

It's simple. If U need a good flash, with moderate power, no so big, and for use in general pruposes, this is Ur flash.
If U need a very good flash, with exact TTL and many power for night shoots, probably U need the SB-900 (or SB-800, if u find one).
Pros? Lightweight, little, metal shoe, easy to use (i use in manual mode) and long CA.
Cons? The sb 600 don't have the little white plastic for hight shoots. It's the only think i miss.

This flash was bought for my wife's D60 to enable her to get shots of my grandson's basketball games in poor gymnasium lighting. Based on its guide number, I calculated that it should be just sufficient when seated at mid-court. It has given her some good shots with the 55-200mm lens. A couple of games later she let me try it on my D90. I found that by using the Auto FP mode and 1/1000 sec shutter speed (at ISO 3200) I was able to eliminate the blur caused by the ambient light at normal shutter speeds and get good freeze-motion shots (although at reduced ranges).
Later I tried using the SB-600 as a (slave) backlight with the D90 in Commander mode. Contrary to what I had read in another review I found that the operation was easy to set up. At a distance of fifteen feet from the camera and facing the backdrop, the SB-600 fired on each flash of the camera. The light reflected only from the backdrop was sufficient to fire the slave.
Although I knew that the SB-600 couldn't serve as a Commander in Nikon's lighting scheme (CLS), I thought my wife would probably not miss that feature. Now that I see how effective this can be and how easily it is implemented, I wish it could serve as a Commander on her D60 for the next SB-600 I plan to buy.

I would love it if it had a built in slave, or 'SU-4' mode, but cannot hold it against the flash, as I knew that before I bought it.
Highly recommended (as long as you don't need a commander, and you don't need a 'slave')

The SB 900 that I bought at the same time makes its little brother look mediocre by comparison, but this is a fine product on its own; and of course no where near the same cost. My only complaint is that the controls were a bit confusing to unravel; but it retains setting and once the technique is figured out, it's a pleasure. As part of Nikon's CLS it is a fine adjunct. I figure there will be more of these or big bro in the future.

Needed something compatible with my D100. Didn't want the extra size of the 900 or the additonal complicated features of the 800. The SB600 is just right. Doesn't seem to recycle quite as fast as my old SB28, but is adequate.

Easy to use, both on and off camera. I often use it for portraits, shooting through an umbrella. Wireless performance with my D80 is fantastic.
For the dollar this flash would be tough to beat. It won't cook a chicken from across the room like the SB-900 does, but for general use, and to supplement your other lighting requirements, it's great.

Up to now, I have purchased 3 of these units. I use them with Nikon D70s and D80. They are great devices.
I have found out that some people ignore the fact that they can be triggered as wireless slaves with both the D70s and D80 since they are able to synchronize with the built in flash of the camera. You can look up the function "commander mode" in the user manual for instructions on how to do it.
One of my units failed and I am clueless about it. It would not fire always and some other times would fire randomly. I discovered through internet forums that some other people had the same problem but was not able to find a feasible and affordable solution so I simply replaced the unit.
I use them for almost everything: Mounted on the camera, background strobes, studio strobe with umbrella, etc.

Perfect for my level of expertise and most importantly, my budget! At this point I really haven't discovered any downside to the SB-600, it is quite frugal in it's power consumption, I've been surprised how long a set of batteries last. The recycle rate is also quicker than I expected as well.

In a word, get the SB800 instead of SB600. But eventually you'll need a SB800 and a SB600 together.
It does everything as Nikon advertised. But I found that I need more power than I thought. So I wish I got the SB800 first. Now I need a SB800 too for more light and multi flashes photography. Alternatively I can upgrade my lens to faster lens, but a SB800 surely cost less then a F2.8 zoom lens :)

This speedlight is the best compromise between the SB-800 and 400. The SB-800 is much larger and doesn't offer much more in real-world features. The SB-400 doesn't have the various head position settings that the SB-600 does, which matters when photographing in the portrait orientation. It is a Nikon product which ensures future compatibility and includes a nice case and a handy stand for use off the camera. I have two SB-600's and they are all that I need for my photography.

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-600 TTL AF Shoe Mount Speedlight, Guide Number at 35mm Zoom Head Position, 30/98 (ISO 100, m/ft), USA Warranty.:
The SB-600 is very easy to use, with a simple user interface on the back of the flash. It's particularly good if you have a Nikon camera that supports Nikon's CLS (auto everything). You can happily blast away with this flash in social situations and be assured good usable pics. It also has manual control, which is fantastic when you want to get more creative.
If you have a Nikon camera, and take lots of photos in low light (most people most of the time), GET ONE. I think it's much more effective than a new low light lens plus it's cheaper. I would definitely recommend it over the smaller (very limited) SB-400, and it's much cheaper than the super whizz-bang SB-800.
My only gripe is with the swivelling head, it locks into place when it is centred (not rotated). The big rubber button on the side of the hinge needs to be pushed in to rotate the flash off centre, and that button is not great. You need to hold the flash with one hand and turn the head with the other to make sure you don’t apply a twisting force to the hotshoe (so put your camera in your lap or wear a neckstrap). This feature is frustrating, if the head didn’t lock you could rotate it quickly towards a bounce wall with one hand, and not miss great moments. I approached a camera repair shop to get this locking feature removed, it was prohibitively expensive (because you have to open the flash right up).
Other than that a very solid, affordable, capable unit.

Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-600 TTL AF Shoe Mount Speedlight, Guide Number at 35mm Zoom Head Position, 30/98 (ISO 100, m/ft), USA Warranty.:
This flash unit is another BRILLIANT product by Nikon! I've owned my SB-600 for 9 weeks now, and over 4,500 shots later (about 1/2 with this flash), I'm in love.
In fact, I'm so in love with this flash's capabilities that I ordered 2 more for use with Nikon's Creative Lighting System and my SB-800 as a flash commander!
In use on-camera, the bounce flash that this unit provides is perfectly exposed EVERY TIME! I have yet to have a bad shot taken using this flash as a photographer at my friend's wedding, and as a photographer at a few formal dinners.
In off-camera use, this flash is the perfect slave unit when coupled with the SB-800 as a flash commander. In the studio, it performs admirably, but that's easy for a flash unit to do... so I put it through the paces when doing a few recent modeling shoots. So far, so good! Extremely fast setup, ease of use, controllable directly from the back of my D-300, or from my SB-800 on top of my D-40... It just plain works, and has FANTASTIC results!!!!
Nikon hit another home run with this unit, and I can't wait to get my second and third SB-600 for some superb lighting possibilities!
I can't say enough nice things about this unit... for the price, you'd be hard priced to find anything else out there that can do HALF of what this unit CAN!

I just bought a second sb-600. I use nikon's creative lighting system to do on location portraits and as fills at weddings. The lights are great and with a couple of gary fong diffusers they provide nice even light in large rooms. Get one or a couple of these lights and you will be amazed at how easy they are to use, especially if you are using a d70 or better nikon, since you can control them from the camera itself.

I got this flash because we were expecting a baby and I knew I would do a lot of indoors photography soon.
I'm glad I got it, it actually arrived two days after the baby and I've been more than happy with it.
Pictures are evenly lit and bouncing the flash gets rid of the ugly shadows behind your subject.
I decided on this over the SB-400 just because I knew I'd rather be over-equipped than under. I liked the functionality that this one has and that it can be used as a remote should I ever get the SB-800.
I don't regret that it's actually bigger than the SB-400 because as I said most of the pictures are taken indoors and I'm really not lugging it around too much.
If I ever lose it I would definitely get another one. Very easy to use too.

The flash is possibly the best purchase I have made in my nearly 20 years as an amateur photographer. I used to own a Nikon 6006 and now have moved into the D-80. With the old Nikon I never thought about buying a flash. I decided to bite the bullet and buy one for the D-80. The difference is beyond words. I now realise what I should have had for the past nearly 20 years - this flash has made my indoor photography life infinitely better. I strongly recommend buying one to anyone that has even 20% of their photography being done indoors. This particular one uses 4 AA cells - and I have taken over 200 photos and have not had to replace them. The only con is the extra weight. But that is minor compared to the results later - no red eye, even lighting, on demand flexible power.

I kicked around buying the SB-400...then changed my mind to the SB-600 for my D70 for the remote fire/Commander mode function on my D70 and could NOT be more happy with the performance so far. Commander Mode is a cool toy and FUN FUN FUN to play with..but even with the SB-600 mounted normally you will see a HUGE difference in your pictures. I just wanted something to "bounce" some light but this does that and SO much more...just buy it if you've got some extra cash...and don't be fooled...it's pretty big but you'll at least look more professional with this on your camera...:):)

For what it is, it can't be beat. Its not a SB-800, so do not expect it to be. It does not have the ability to command other flashes or a few of the other high end features of the 800. However, it's head rotates from 0-90º vertically and horizontally. It recycles quickly. It is not heavy and does not greatly change the center of gravity of the camera when attached above. It functions as a slave flash when you are able to afford a command unit. All-in-all it is a great flash for someone who cannot justify or afford the purchase of an SB-800. I am very impressed and have enjoyed my use of the SB-600.

Unfortunately - or not - we all need a flash to do certain photo works we have and being a D200 owner, I invested in the SB600, as it has enough power for my needs. I will not describe the differences it makes when compared with the built-in unit,- water from wine - the only thing I say is that it has very consistent and even output when bounced - I only used it bounced - either completely "plain" or with the Lumiquest Pocket Bouncer and even better with the GF Lightsphere. Battery life is outstanding - I use it with 2700 mha Uniross batteries - and recycling time it is really fast. Construction is fair enough.A must have for the serious worker.

Overall I think that this product is great - just like all other Nikon products. The use of 4 AA batteries makes it a little heavy but not too much to handle. Sometimes I feel like the slow recycling slows me down, but in all fairness I have never owned another hot shoe flash. My criticism of how fast it recycles is based solely on how fast I would like it to recycle. [...] Overall I am extremely satisfied with the results of the pictures when I use this flash.

This product has met my expectations. As a casual photographer it probably has more features than I will ever use, but it was easy to connect to my camera and I was able to use it right out of the box.

The SB600 is a good value. The light is sturdy and works well on camera in all modes, and works great of camera in manual mode. I use it with [...] Hot Shoe Slave to function as a hair light in a studio setting.

Flash was given to me as a Christmas gift. It has lived up to all of the good things that were said about it in the reviews that I read. I have enjoyed using it with my D70s.

I have two of these speedlites and can boldly say I've yet to be dissapointed. Having owned and loved the discontinued SB-80dx I wanted to step up my game. Now that may seem strange SB-80dx vs. SB-600 and not SB-800. Well I'll admit that I was one of many procastinating film lovers who didn't jump into the digital era until the awesome D200 was released, and very slowly I might add. I didn't have the cash to purchase the SB-800 but wanted to have a flash that functioned with Nikon's CLS(creative lighting system). I thought that after having the former big-gun of Nikon that I'd be dissapointed but what suprise!!! These lights are great for fill and indoor flash photography and simple to set-up. After scantly reading the manual I had the speedlite at the command of the D200's pop up flash/commander mode.

I am very happy with the wireless function,
although radio auto-synchronization is not
very fast, it is still super.

Great way to add another CLS Flash at a low cost, vs. the SB 800, but you give up the CLS Master capability. Probably an even better deal if your Nikon has a built-in flash with full CLS Master capability. With my D2X, I now wish I had spent the extra to get another SB-800, for a total of 3 ea. SB-800 units. The power of the SB-600 is pretty good, but sometimes I wish it had the same Guide Number as the SB-800 at the same zoom setting. An example is when using them to light a dark gym for action basketball shots. I use an SB-800 on camera, with my other SB-800 as a remote, and my SB-600 as the other remote. In summary, a great product, but as always, there are advantages to having all units exactly the same if your finances permit.

This is a good buy. Flash is bright and recycles quickly. I would recommend buying a diffuser to generate a softer, more uniform flash.
If you are a hobbyist or just getting into digital photography, I would save your money and buy this flash over the SB-800. Should you ever want some of the more advanced features of the SB-800, you can purchase that and use the SB-600 as a slave flash for the Advanced Wireless Lighting.
Comments about Nikon Nikon SB-600 TTL AF Shoe Mount Speedlight, Guide Number at 35mm Zoom Head Position, 30/98 (ISO 100, m/ft), USA Warranty.:
Flash works consistently with my Nikon D200, while either on camera, on cord, or using the Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System).
I like it so much that I will be purchasing 1 or 2 additional unit(s).
Minor NitPick: The flash can not be used as a slave without using the Nikon CLS.
FYI: I had one malfunction while shooting a gig. The flash stopped working properly and gave all kinds of wierd output. It was probably caused by taking the flash off the camera while the camera/flash was turned on. Shutting everything down (and possibly removing batteries) cured the issue.

Does not light the scene as it should from 10 to 12 feet. A friend bought the same flash unit and has had the same experience. Too much money for the results.

I have owned several Nikon flashes, but this is the best. All of my other cameras have been film with appropriate flashes. Now that I have gone "digital" I couldn't imagine what a difference a flash like this could make.

I am using this flash with the D80 Nikon. I am not using it heavily. I use it with people indoors and outdoors. The fill in use asked from me some adjustement. I love the possibility to use the flash when it is mounted somewhere else than on my camera. I need to get use to all the possibility and learn how to use it. Great product.

I use flash for all kinds of work but really like it with macro work . The flash is very good with both the D70 and D200 .. but the rubber button that lets you tilt and swivel is just glued on with cheap glue. a week after I had it the glue gave way and I lost the button .. It still works but now dust and junk gets in and I bet it will brake down someday .. I will stick with the better SB800 over this flash

Out of the box, stuck it on my d50. Took a test shot and WOW. I was hooked...I carry it everywhere I go that I may be doing indoor shots. I have only used it to bounce light, as I havent mastered direct lighting with it.. This flash is VERY powerful

I bought this flash to go with my Nikon D50. It is a good compliment. I am using 2,700 mah NiMH batteries so recycle time and numbers of flashes is great. I would highly recommend this flash to anyone looking for a good value. It has the ability to do more than I will probably ever need, but it is nice to know that the features are there.

I already have the sb-800 and D2X -- so for upcoming wedding figured I would try Nikon's auto system, vs my normal trial/error/bracket with my other flashes.
WOW --For out of the box working, it WAS FANTASTIC!! The 800 was great master and from there could control the settings on 600 with few clicks. It makes me think of getting another for full 3 point lighting!

I've not had this strobe long, but the first few photos I took were fantastic. Before I took my first photo, however, it took an hour (really) with the Speedlight manual and the camera manual.
The following might help the new user:
Using the Nikon SB-600 Speedlight with the Nikon D-70.
The first and most confusing thing is to get to the menu by holding down the ‘zoom’ and ‘-‘ keys. It seems silly to not have a menu button.
Then:
A. Using the flash on the camera hotshoe (probably default settings)
1. Set speedlight to TTL (Turn off the ‘s’ shaped arrow)
2. Set Camera to TTL. (Menu 19, Flash Mode, select TTL)
B. To use camera remotely with the on camera flash as the Master
1. Set Speedlight to CH3 Group A
2. Press ‘zoom’ and ‘-‘ to get the menu and turn TTL off and the S-shaped arrow on.
3. Select strobe level (1/16 to 1/1). Start with 1/16 to get the feel for the speedlight
4. On the camera, go to Menu 19, Flash mode, and select “M Commander Mode”

The flash that is on the Nikon D70s is not what it should be so I picked this one up to help fill my flash needs....oh that is funny.
It's a really solid unti. It does it's job but for someone who is not very good with the concept of flahs photography the manual, all be it detailed, was not easy to understand. I think this would be the case with any flash but I alwasy have trouble getting the flash concept.
Over all I take some great shots with it and have gotten better over time. It's seem to love batteries but I have the nicads and they hold up pretty well.
If you looking for a really good flash and not trying to break the bank for your Nikon then here it is. If you are a PRO I would move to the 800.

I own this flash for one year and 3 months and it was really working great= no complaints. However, it suddenly couldn't be turn on. Even with new batteries, it didn't work so I had to send it for an expansive repair!
