Works great for all of my indoor and outdoor shots when needed. Only downfall; when using 24 mm wide angle on a full frame camera, it leaves the corners dark. Great recycle time.

I love the ability to direct the flash where I want it and that it can also be used off camera. However, if using sports mode or fast shutter speeds it does not keep up with the camera speed very well. Otherwise, the recycle time is definitely fast enough.

Does it all. I liked the 430EX’s noticeably faster recycle times, bouncing back from a full discharge in under 4 sec, compared with almost 7 sec for the old 420EX. The 430EX also has a handy set of custom functions like the new LCD screen instead of the row of lights. Also, used with a bounce cover, emits just the right amount for shooting in the outdoors no matter the time of day. Couldn't be anymore pleased, will probably use it for years to come.

Combine this with a Gary Fong Lightshpere and you have portable studio quality lighting! ( or darn close to it!)

I'm a big fan of shooting with fast lenses and available light, but sometimes you need to control the lighting. There are some expensive accessories you might need to pick up if you are serious and want more control. A sync cord or a wireless transmitter for the camera will help you get the flash off the camera so you can position it at the optimal place.

A lot of canons only have a sync speed of a 250th of a second which can be a bit slow, especially for bright sunlight. Put a polarizer or neutral density filter on to drop a few stops.

I love it! It's great for showing movement and action, as well as a great light to fill the eyes with (when diffused). The batteries might die out pretty quickly with extended use (weddings) so be sure to carry extras. Go out and get one! You won't be disappointed.

Great flash for everyday use. Only thing that I dont like is the locking mechanism, wish it was more like the 580's slide lock than the screw down feature. Other than that cant go wrong with this flash. Works like it is supposed to and has great recycle time.

At first I was worried about not having the flash output of the 580EX. After using it at a recent wedding I was hired to cover, NO CONCERNS WHATSOEVER. The flash output was perfect in all the shots, recycle time was awesome (using 4 2500mah high capacity AAs), and it was very quiet. My older Nikon SB600 flash was noisy during recycle times, none of those issues on the Canon setup.

The 580EX will give you + - 5feet more of output, but not an issue for me. Great flash for the money / weight combination.

I made the mistake of buying a cheaper flash thinking it would be good enough. After less than a month it was toast, a hard lesson to learn but you definatly get what you pay for. The Cannon Speedlite give me all the flash I could need, outstanding features, and of course quality.
It does seem alittle heavy, but that just will take time to get used to, the performance and duraliblty more than make up for it.

This flash has changed the quality of my photos. The auto feature does pretty well, but having the manual adjustment to be able to control the amount of flash is wonderful. I shot pictures at wedding recently with just the pop-up flash and a shoe mounted generic flash that had one power.. The pictures were awful. I shot another wedding with my new flash since then and the difference in the pictures is amazing,, and with the same camera. I have a Canon Rebel.. I would recommend this flash to anyone that needs to improve the quality of their pictures..

I just receive my flash. Install him on my Canon G7 and try him without any reading of manual in fully automatic mode in most rough condition for any type of flash - stairs, without any light source, distance in between ceiling and floor around 6 meters and result is amazing. For this price this is amazing product. Somebody may ask me why with G7 answer is simple. I use G7 in all purposes. Lower quality of pictures fully automatic mode without additional equipment. Little bit serious photo of course manual mode with additional equipment (if it is requires of camera for excellent picture quality).

This is a great flash considering the price. It's the baby 580EX. I wish it could serve as master slave as well. I understand the logic behind it though.

This flash works great as bounce flash since I rather not see any harsh shadow on pictures.

It has long battery life. It lasts longer than I thought. I have more than 500 pictures on a pack of batteries ans still counting.

I have used my flash for fill and for main lighting. It has been a great addition to my EOS giving me more flexibility in shooting at Rotary Conferences, where lighting has been a challenge. In the past, I would push the ISO Rating to similate ISO 3200, now I can shoot in much less light and grab great images.

Having previously owned a 420EX I was satisfied with it's performance both on and off the camera. The one shortcoming was the inability to use the flash outdoors as the Key light instead of as a fill light. The 430 solved this problem by adding a manual mode, allowing flash intensity to be set higher than surrounding ambient light. This has provided more flexibility to an already outstanding product.

I use this flash all the time since I got it about three monhts ago. I've shot over 2000 frames, without any problems. I shoot events, model/ head shots around the LA and OC area and I love it. I use the swivel head all the time to bounce light. Works well with all kinds of lighting situations - fill flash, bounce flash as well and main light. Spend the money and get it, your photos will improve.

I bought this flash to enter the modern era. My previous flash was an old Sunpak pistol-grip model which was about 20 years old. Since it was manual adjust only, I felt limited when I connected it to my Canon EOS 20D. Not having done extensive testing with the manual flash (shoot me), I took more exposures than I wanted in order to get a properly exposed image.Since I purchased the 430 EX, life is good! I only need to make one or two test flashes so I can adjust the exposure compensation on the flash, and VOILA!I also purchased the foldup Stroboframe and the hot shoe extension cable for the flash. The combo is wonderful. Add the 430 EX ability to swivel for bounce flash and I'm having a good time taking photos which are properly exposed AUTOMATICALLY!I'm a very happy CANON [...] customer!

I was looking for a flash that performed much like the 550 but without the price. This one did just as I expected. It's a great flash, the size is perfect, and it is consistent. My only complaint is that the recycling time is a bit low and it goes through batteries pretty quickly, unless using heavy duty rechargables.

Right out of the box with no warning, I got a call to shoot a friends wedding. The "Pro" wedding photographer did not show up. So, I filled in and I shot over 200 photos, with the new 430 on my Rebel XT and got great results. Good consitant light, plenty of output, zoom worked well and it held up for the entire wedding and reception on a single set of batteries. Very impressive. Even used some of the photos for my portfolio.

This is a perfect alternative to 580ex if you do not need master functionality. Slightly decreased output compared to 580ex is not a problem in 99.9% of shooting situations (how often do you shoot from 55 meters away with a flash?), but the price difference is significant. If you are just starting out, this is the flash for you. If you feel you need a master later, you can always get 580 and use this one as a slave (which you would have to do anyway). The only minor inconveniece I have experienced is button controls as opposed to roller wheel on 580, but you get used to it.

very small, compact, great value and great performer. functions great for most applications and deffinately worth the money savings over the flagship model. will perform great for most photographers, and will work as a slave when you decide to upgrade. During a low light wedding, my only complaint was that the AF assist was very poor when used with a flash bracket. I have not had a chance to investigate the problem just yet.

I'm not a pro, but I've been quite happy with how nice skin tones turn out with this flash. It is a huge improvement over the camera's built-in flash. It fills small rooms with light pretty well. It is the cheapest speedlight that his tilt and swivel, which is great for bounce. I've used it with good results on my Rebel XT.

I demand a lot from my equipment, I have the 550ex and this, the 430ex, its solid, its light and its DURABLE, pack it with 2800ma NiMH batteries and you are ready to go.

I had it into a tripod stand and a person walked by it and pushed it, it fell from about 5"5' straight into the concrete, I spected the worst, but after turning it off and on it was working again, yes, it had a small mark in the plastic but I think for a delicate piece of equipment the strong construction saved it from harm!

Its still working and I'm happy with it.
