I was looking for the Canon 580Ex but the cost was a little prohibitive and then I found this flash with virtually the same features. And I love the ease of use. And its versatily.

Comments about Sigma Sigma EF-500 Super DG Shoe Mount Flash for Canon EOS E-TTL, Guide Number of 165 feet / 50 meter at 105mm Setting.:

With all the electronic in the Rebel XT, I was hesitant to believe that this 3rd party flash could be as automatic as advertised. I got it out of the box and put it through the paces, direct light in mixed conditions, shooting into a bright area with harsh shadows, direct flash, bounce light and they all turned out perfect. Simply, an amazing piece of equipment.

It's big but it works. If you can't afford a SB 600, this would be ok. I finally switched to SB-800 and would never go back.

I bought this for D100 and have to buy SB800 later after trial. Burned 2 time because used battery pack (They don't have the mark and can be plug in either way).

Economic 550EX Alternative

Comments about Sigma Sigma EF-500 Super DG Shoe Mount Flash for Canon EOS E-TTL, Guide Number of 165 feet / 50 meter at 105mm Setting.:

The EF500 is a viable alternative to the Canon 550EX at a fraction of the cost. The EF500 is well-built and has a relatively quick recycle time. Occaisionally in extreme situations it can provide some inconsistent results - however using the FE lock function corrects this and provides good, consistent results. This is a great addition to your camera bag.

Pretty good unit
By Sean Ward,[...]Verified Reviewer from Wichita, KS on 8/20/2006

Cons:

Best Uses:

Comments about Sigma Sigma EF-500 Super DG Shoe Mount Flash for Canon EOS E-TTL, Guide Number of 165 feet / 50 meter at 105mm Setting.:

I was told this product is better than the top of the line Canon flash, but to my dismay I feel the 580ex would be a better product. The flap that holds the batteries in is very weak and it seems like it wants to fall off. The flash gives great lighting and the controls are amazing, but it eats batteries more than the Canon flashes do.
