I've read reviews that claimed the clamping action was a little weak. There is an adjustment for the clamp pressure. Also read reviews that claimed the trigger was hard to depress. They must have the strength of a child. I am not a strong person in the least bit and I have no problems using this ball head.

If you plan on doing a lot of panoramic photography, you might want to look into a different type of head. There is no real easy way to line up your shots with this head, but it could be done. I just think there are better heads for pano shots.

I have had 2 of these. Both units have had the same problem. After about 4 years the ball builds up a light coat of grease and the head is not secure. I would still recommend this product.

This is a great ball head (I paired it with the Manfrotto 190 XDB tripod) that has excellent range of motion, a very smooth and stable action, and it's solid as a rock for shooting. Easy release and you know when the plate's locked in - no worries about dumping my camera accidentally!
A great ball head at a very good price. Definitely recommend if you want crisp, tack sharp photos but don't have a huge bank account.

I shoot a lot of landscapes and wildlife, so I need a ball head that's stable and precise. This one meets those criteria perfectly.

The only downsides are a slightly limited range of motion and that I need both hands to adjust the camera position. Might want to get your hands on one before buying to make sure it works for you.

The Bogen - Manfrotto Improved Grip Action Ball Head with the RC-2 quick release is a well excecuted and constructed piece of gear that can last a lifetime. No plastic here. It's a solid piece of kit that does not need to be babied. A quick release can be purchased and attached to the end of the handle for a joystick like action, but for larger cameras, the conventional mount works better.

The RC-2 release has a brass safety lock, and secured the camera firmly to the head. The head has good, but not unlimited range of motion. It is quick, and the level helps line things up. It is a bit easier to end up with a slightly tilted horizon. Obviously, releasing the clamp releases all axis of adjustment at once, unlike a pan and tilt head. Clamping power can be adjusted with a knurled knob.

Over the past year, mine developed a stickiness to the action. A bit of silicone spray cleared that up without and resulting slippage. Can it hold a long telephoto in place? Yes, if you are astute enough to use a lens mount on that long glass. It is still my preferred head. I use it with a Nikon D200 with the MD200. This head has no problem holding a Nikkor 300mm AiS lens steady with the lens yoke. The Nikkor 500mm reflex does not droop either.

For architecture and landscapes, a pan and tilt might be a better choice. For portraiture, wildlife, and other photography where the horizon is not a critical point of reference, this head comes into it's own.

I use this head primarily for landscape shooting, but it's useful in almost any situation where quick change of head position is needed. There's a wide range of handle positions available - right or left, trigger in front or back, horizontal or joystick position, very adaptable.
Not the best for video where smooth motion is needed.

I have used this ball head for about 3 weeks now and love the ease with which I can change camera positions. It is a bit easier to operate than my other three way pan tilt head. It is also reasonably compact compared to my pan tilt head. This ball head supports my big Sigma 150-500 lens quite well. I also like that it switches from right to left hand operation easily. In summary this is an excellent easy to use ball head.

The grip action ball head replaced a Kirk BH3 ball head. Although the Kirk is an excellent ballhead, I did not have the flexibility that the Manfrotto grip action ball head gives to me. The grip action ball head can be adjusted with one hand and the Kirk ballhead knobs do not allow an adjustment to be done with a single hand.

This head was an upgrade from from Manfroto 804RC2, Basic Tilt head. The three handles were slow and panning limited to a single plain. The Action Ball head is much faster and more versatile.

The multiple setup options allows right and left handed use, as well as a vertical "pistol" grip. The tension adjustment allows you to pan on diagonals smoothly and easily. This feature is very useful in "action blur" shooting.

The head is heavy, so when added to the already heavy tripod, you end up with a "load" to pack in and out the location. (But, the construction is very stable.) The grip pressure is surprising stiff, so your wrist can tire quickly.

Overall I am very please with the addition of this head to my "kit."

Excellent hold. I trust it while it holds my camera + lens + battery grip. It gives good non-shaky shots. Give quick control of different orientation of camera.. its amazingly quick.

Limitations are
1) it's little bit heavy.. It doubles by tripod weight.
2) If you need quick horizontal movement, it is hard to do that with this ball head. I think it may be limitation of all ball heads.

I use this with Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 to support my Sony A700 with grip and multitude of lenses. It works very well for normal angles when the center of gravity is above the ball. But at extreme angles the head displays a little play even with my lighter lenses. I haven't weighed it but the camera + grip + lens should be well south of the rated 11 lb.

It's definitely better (and heavier) than stuff I've used in the past but not as good as I've hoped. I may keep this for faster action and get a different ball head with higher rating for other occasion.

While new, it is very stiff even with the tension at its lowest setting. This obviously will improve with use, but at present it is difficult to make fine adjustments to framing in the viewfinder. I still like the weight and stability. It makes one feel confident in a less than comfortable environment. The grip control is not quite as convenient as I expected.

I had my mind made up to get a ball head - and went into a local camera store to "test drive" a few. I really wasn't inclined to look at a joystick grip - but figured I'd check it out. Fell in love with the ease of control with the joystick!

I just bought the Sigma 150-500 mm lens for my Canon 40D and it is HEAVY. So I needed a head that would safely handle the weight. THe Manfrotto was advertised to handle 11 lbs. So I ordered it from Adorama.

I LOVE it! THe only issue I have is because that lens is SO heavy and awkward, I need to hold it with one hand while setting up my shot (adjusting the position of the head). So I really could use three hands - one for the shutter, one for supporting the lens, and one for holding the joystick. Found a workaround, however..... shutter release cable. I hold it in my hand with the joystick, and use the other hand to support the lens. VOILA!

All in all, I could not be happier with the head - unless Manfrotto supplied a third hand for people like me with humonguous lenses.....

I've had Bogen tripods and various heads for years and this is by far the most stable and easy to use. Great range of motion for a ball head and very stable. Far better than my previous ball head. No drift and holds position even with long 300mm Nikon lens on my D300 body. Very solidly built. Highly recommend it.

This ball-head is of the same high quality that I have come to expect from Manfrotto. The grip is smooth and firm. If you release from the fingers rather than the thumb, you shouldn't have any problems with 'creep.' I routinely put a Canon 450D with vertical grip, L-plate, and 100mm macro lens on it, and this grip is rock solid. I strongly recommend getting an extra 322RA 'Quick Relase Assembly' to allow quick changes from vertical to horizontal for when you use a big lens, such as a 70-200mm 2.8.

This is my most used ball-head.

A colleague turned me on to this head about 2 years ago at [...] - and I've been thanking him ever since. I just don't know why you'd use anything else. This grip spells the END of fiddling with annoying knobs! Action is smooth and INSTANT and the locking mechanism when handle is released is perfect. Range of motion is everything you'd want when doing wedding formals especially. Instantly change from horizontal to vertical and back in the blink of an eye. If I have one gripe it is that the base tends to loosen over the day as I shoot - easy enough to re-tighten onto the tripod occasionally, however. I will NEVER go back to a traditional head!

Need a strong grip to disengage. You hand will get sore using it all day. Strong hold! Like the versitility of left, right or top mounting. But be aware the left/right mounting limit the range of motion.

I recently purchased this Manfrotto grip ballhead and have not had much opportunity to use it. So far, I really am pleased with it. I was concerned that some said it was difficult to squeeze the handle, but I find it very easy to use and I am an 85 year old man. Very easy to switch over to left hand.

This is the first ball head I have owned so I can't give a comparison to others, however I am very satisfied with this one. The only negative thing to say is that the handle takes a very strong grip. I have it on the loosest setting and it is still strong. Sure wouldn't work for children or elderly folks with arthritis.

I previously owned the pistol grip, but found it too weak to use with a SLR and flip bracket. This one works much better, but I look to shoot with my right hand and adjust the head with my left. Having the release grip on the left makes it a little inconvenient for minor adjustments. The grip can be mounted on the left, but this prevents vertical shooting.

After being frustrated with my current tripod head I purchase this one. It is great to be able to adjust your view in all directions with a quick squeeze of the grip. This head is not recommended for sports or nature photography where you need to follow the action quickly or track a bird. Solid, easy to set up and use. My biggest concern in purchasing a ballhead was the cantilevering action with conventional ones. This ballhead grip addressed these. The grip dimensions are man sized but shouldn't intimidate users with fine or weak hands. The quick attach/release works as it should and secures the camera solidly.

I used to have the 3265 that I used when I was doing people type photography. When I finally saw that the 323RC2 came out I sold the older one and bought this. Best head ever for the price. I shoot a lot of verticals and it really shines for that. The big improvement for the new head is that the axis is so much lower I no longer have to move my whole tripod when going from horizontal to vertical.

This ball head is excellent. It holds my DSLR firmly and can be in any positions I want. The only thing to be cautious is that a camera can fall onto the ground if it is not firmly held when detaching it from the head.

I have used this Ball Head w/Grip on several travel-related shoots, and it's worked very well for me. I have a Nikon D200 with three different lenses, the largest of which is a Nikkor 70-300mm. Would definitely recommend it to others considering a ball head for their tripod. It even fits (okay, it's a little tight, but it does fit) in the tripod carrying bag, which was an added bonus.

Just received the head and I'm sending it back. When in a vertical position, the head allows only a small tilt forward and back. I take a lot of vertical shots in my portrait work and I see this as a major drawback. Also had trouble customizing the position of the camera plate. If you are considering this head, I highly suggest trying one out first.

be careful when ordering this unit. When I received mine it would not attach to my tripods. The mounting hole was too large. Called Customer Service and they informed me that i needed a bushing to reduce the size. Give me a break------------how many of us use a tripod that has a non-standard camera size hole.cost me an extra [$]. Ask the questions.

I have this head mounted on a Benbo tripod (my choice of tripods - I like the heavy weight). I not only use my camera for hobby, but extensively for work in policing - collision investigation and crime scene/forensics. This head is very easy to adjust and most of the time, if it's work related, it means I'm shooting in adverse conditions. I can operate this tripod head with my mittens on in the extreme cold and if there's wind, I've got the added stability of the head's weight combined with a heavy tripod. The range of motion covers everything I need from long exposure shots, to getting up nice and close to photograph a fingerprint. The camera I use this with is a D200 with assorted lenses - the longest at the moment being a 200mm.[...]

it's not the best ballhead made - look to Really Right Stuff and other manufacturers for that - but as ballheads in this price range go, this is a great one. one person said it's heavy; it's not. it's magnesium and a perfect complement to a carbon-fiber tripod...weighs much less than some heads i've tried. i've been using this head for about two years now and have never had a complaint about its weight. another person said it can't handle heavy rigs, but - as long as the tension control is set tight enough - it keeps my D2x nice and stable with my 70-200 VR attached, which is a total weight of around six pounds. i'm sure it couldn't be used with a *really* massive lens - it is only rated for 11 pounds, after all - but it works well for a lot of common shooting situations.

i never thought i'd like any ball head, but i love this one. my Girlfriend likes it too, and She's ultra-picky. ;)

my only complaint is its limited range of movement: the same handle that makes this head such a joy to use prevents the camera from dropping more than a few degrees to the right, which can be a limitation sometimes. it drops the full 90 degrees to the left, and maybe a little more, but if you want to rotate your camera to the right for any reason, you're pretty much out of luck with this head unless you use the vertical-grip setup that i personally find awkward and that also reduces the head's weight limit to about five pounds. that complaint aside, though, i really like this head. i did a bit of headhunting (ark ark) before and was never really satisfied until i found this head, which hasn't come off my tripod since i put it on about two years ago, and won't until i can afford a Really Right Stuff BH-55.

I've been using this product consistently for landscapes since my purchase. It's performed extremely well in good weather and bad. If there's one "con" to the grip it's that you sometimes have to work with it to achieve the needed range when using it in portrait mode.

Difficult to use with any but light lenses (and how many lenses nowdays are light?) - better off with a good, stable ballhead and forget these gimmicks, this unit would be fine with a small P&S camera, but was nearly useless with heavy camera/lens combinations.

This head is amazing! It holds a ton of weight in almost any imaginable position. For my money, its the best ballhead on the market. simply put, its amazing, although fine tuning the framing is a littl etough if you have weak hands, but once it gets easyer, the performance is remarkable!

Great range of motion but, takes a bit to fully realize the way it moves. I have added a second Quick Release Assembly (QRA) to increase the range of camera positions. By placing the second QRA at the end of the grip you can shoot straight down for macro work with out repositioning the center support on your tripod. I use it left handed so I have my right hand free for camera control.

Not for panning and requires a steady hand for exact position. The unit is heavy but, the weight is in your favor for stability.

Additionally, The grip can be used left or right handed or vertical. The QRA can be fine tuned at each of the three postions to better fit to your style.

I've got head mounted on 680 monopod. The grip action allows for very quick positioning, and is rock solid when the grip is released. A variable friction control ensures the head does not drift when a heavy telephoto is used.
