The '49x' series is made with lighter materials, and does not operate nearly as smoothly as the discontinued '48x' series. The drag control is pointless as drag is always felt. Also, the 90 deg. slot is on one side instead of two.

This is a great product, but need to know that it has a 3/8 inch thread, so if your tripod has a 1/4 inch screw, you will need to buy a 1/4 to 3/8 inch adapter.

Comments about Manfrotto (distributed by Bogen) Manfrotto (Distributed by Bogen) Compact Ball Head 496 with RC2 Rapid Connect Plate, Maximum Load: 13.2 lbs/ 6 kg:

I acquired this ball head after working with a 3-way head for the past 2 years. I found that, with some types of shots, I was struggling too much with the handles on my 3-way. With any kind of moving subject, a ball head is much more fluid and easier to use. It's also more compact when I pack it away in my equipment bag.

Like all Manfrotto equipment I have used so far, this head feels well-made and solid. The quick-release is secure. I'm not worried that the camera could detach unexpectedly in any kind of use.

My one complaint is a small one, but sometimes, when I focus on an object and clamp down on the knob, there can be a slight amount of movement as pressure on the ball increases. It's not a major issue, just something I'm not accustomed to after using a more precise 3-way head.

Talk about quality! I picked this up with a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod, and I must say that I am truly pleased with this company. Their products are well built and will last for many years. This is my first ball head and I am still getting used to it, but I love the functionality and versatility it provides. I was initially concerned about the clamp and how it would stand up to repeated use, but it seems very durable and I haven't read any complaints yet. I have no doubt it will support the weight it is rated for, and some. Stop thinking and just buy it!

I needed a good ball head for my new Flashpoint carbon fiber tripod. Just put it on in time to photograph some beautiful Big Horn Sheep. It worked great and the images are great.

I have an older Model 488RC2 on my tripod. This is on my monopod but could use either on either. Same quick release plates so both camera bodies and 100-300/4 lens can mount to tri or mono pod. The capacity of the 496 is overkill and excellent value. Handles a 100-300/4 plus TC and Pentax K20D easy and sure.

The Manfrotto compact ball head has been very useful in my outdoor portraits! I don't have to remove my camera from the tripod to go from portrait to landscape. My only complaint would be the controls to operate are somewhat awkward. Overall...I'm very pleased with this product.

Bought this head to go w/ the Manfrotto 190XProB. It's main purpose was to shoot landscape and scenery. The movement of the head is smooth and the lock controls are easy to use. Had no issues w/ any part of this head. This is my first ball head so i have no others to compare it too but i am very satisfied w/ the purchase.

I bought this ball head because my tripod's original head is a standard two ways controller. I like this ball head's adjustable ball smoothness. Only I would like to have a spirit level on it.
