The Slik Pro Ball 800 Head is solid and semi-heavy. Functions work well, but lack that precision feel of more expensive ball heads. Of course, at roughly 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of those more expensive units, it's hard to go wrong with the Slik. They could have added a bubble level to the ball head at minimal cost to allow the photographer to set it level. Also, and this is not a big deal for me, there is no scale for setting precise angles of view in pano shots.
Specifically, the release control works well, but could be better at tightening the ball without having to "crank" down on it.. The tension adjustment knob feel a little too "heavy" when adding tension for larger lenses. The swivel adjustment works perfectly.

Unit balanced well on F-1228 tripod and proved easy to adjust and attach/detach cameras. Adjustment remained stable with moderately long lens attached (200 mm zoom racked out). The only design feature I could see adding might be a hinge to speed up the shift from horizontal to vertical format. (An earlier review did not include field experience with this unit.)

This unit performed quite well on its first 4-day field trip into autumn foliage country. It adjusts quickly and easily and does not add excess weight to the F-1228 tripod leg on which it's mounted. One more feature that would have been great would be a hinge to allow quick 90-degree rotation for vertical format shots.

All functions operate as expected. Visible machine work and finish is very clean. Unit is mated with Adorama Flashpoint F1228 tripod. Test shots have been performed, but the rig has not been carried into the field as of this review. (The F1228 comes with a very nice case, but alas, not large enough to hold the Slik head when mounted.)

Nice head, great for budget minded. Can't rival the high end units but for the money this is top-notch. Only minor complaint is when flipped to portrait mode it is not exactly level. And that my just be my sample. Still easy to use, somewhat compact and solid unit. Holds my heavier glass fine.

I bought the Slik Pro Ball 800 Head to mount on my Slik tripod in order to have a smoother tilt and pan for my HD camcorder. The 800 head meets this need.

Very well built and quite large. Double controls allow rotation of head without lossening the ball. A bubble level would help to make sure camera is level.
