I love the Slik tripod but it will not work with Nikon D 5000 because you can't open the Live view screen.

Like a lot of things in life, there are trade offs with tripods. Everyone wants one that weighs 2 pounds and will hold a 400 2.8. This tripod is very solid and will hold my small 4x5 without trouble. I had a lighter tripod and was getting some soft images (even with a 645, not just the 4x5), so I upgraded to this. Its on the heavy side, but that is what I had to give up to get solid. If you are shooting a DSLR with smaller lenses you could get by with something less, but if you want to use 300mm+ or a medium format or large format you need this support. Bogens cost much more and don't perform any better.

I am a hobby photographer and was looking for a multi-purpose tripod that was light-weight and didn't break the bank. This is one of those products that you could tell is well made right out of the box. Solidly built and quality construction.

I am 6' tall and this is a good height tripod for me. The tripod is very functional and I especially like the independently adjustable legs.

If you can't afford a high dollar tripod, this one is an excellent value for the money.
I've had mine for almost a year now, and it still functions great.
If I had to change anything, I would replace the head with a Slik AF2100 Ball head to make it faster and easier to use.

Overall I am very happy with the product, and would buy another one.

I didn't have the cash to spend on a 'high-end' tripod, so I went for this one. Straight out of the box, i knew I had a winner here. I'm an engineer by trainng, and I know when something's been well put together. The 400 DX definitely falls into that czategory. It impresses on so many levels. I'd buy a second one in a heartbeat! :)

Comments about Slik Slik Pro 400DX Tripod Legs - Black - with 3-Way Pan/Tilt Quick Release Head (Height 18.5 - 61", Maximum Load 9.9 lbs):

Seems stable and well built, but falls apart after some use. The plastic on the leg locks craked and now the legs fall out.
Also, the head is stiff and combersome, and the quick release primitave compared to a Bogen or other brand.

This is a great piece of gear for the road. It is light and small but strong and stable. You have to unscrew the head handles to pack it in the medium SLIK carrying case but it only takes a couple of minutes. I would purchase this again for use on the road. Handles Canon digital SLR's with big heavy "L" lenses great!
