Comments about Audio-Technica Electro Voice 635N/DB - Omni-Directional Handheld Dynamic N/DYM ENG Microphone (Black:

Designed as an interview microphone, its omnidirectional pickup pattern allows the interviewer to hold the mic between both people without constantly pointing it back and forth. Its sensitivity is broad ranging but slightly biassed towards the human voice, while tending to suppress the unneeded very low frequencies. The effect is to somewhat reduce ambient noise such as air conditioning, traffic etc.
It is also built to reduce handling noise from the interviewer's hand and is internally shielded from wind noise. In all, this unit is meant to give clear, quality voice recording in less than ideal "studio" environments.
I find that care still needs to be taken with handling and wind. A good windshield (preferably fur) is still a good precaution in anything more than a moderate breeze. And you still need to take care not to move the mic around in the hand too much.
The unit is surprisingly small and compact, with a good heft from its steel case. Its other advantage is that as a dynamic microphone, it never needs batteries or external power.
I haven't done more than initial tests on it yet, so can't comment on its durability or actual performance in the field. But it comes from a long line of "classic" units which have proven themselves over many decades, so I'm looking forward to getting good service from it. I also intend to try using it in other ways, such as recording ambient sound on theatre stages, audience applause etc.
