Brilliant idea in the age of green. While other manufacturers have talked about replacement cartridges, IDX placed their manufacturing money where their mouth is. After talking with a rep at NAB 08 and checking out the product first hand, I realized it was going to be my first purchase after I left the show. I've used these batteries for two months now and these are my observations.
The cartridge placement and replacement couldn't be easier. Since it is a new product I haven't had to replace the originals, but there are clear instructions for the process included with the batteries. The biggest plus in my opinion, is the ability to travel with the batteries as carry-ons (as long as you take the cartridges out), rather than placing them with the luggage. For those projects where you really need to run and gun, not having to wait for any other baggage just because you separated out your batteries is a big help.
Solid construction all around and as durable as any except perhaps for a certain manufacturer from Connecticut. The V-lock has worked flawlessly on every mount I've placed the battery on; a solid and positive feel. My experience has been that the Capacity Display is as accurate if not more so than any of the other competitors gauges. I typically use these batteries on a rig that powers an HVX200, a Marshall monitor, and a Firestore. With two battery packs fully charged, I can make it through a ten hour day with everything powered up and no need to charge either one during that time; granted, I haven't had to run everything for the full ten hours straight...yet.
Personally, I can't find anything to complain about this product. Over time I'll see how the charging cycles change and eventually how the replacement service works. But for now, it has been one of the best investments for my rig and company.
