Review Summary
The Apple Mac Pro Server Desktop Workstation is a loaded workstation powered by a 3.2GHz quad-core Intel Xeon processor based on the most up-to-date Intel Core architecture. An integrated memory controller enables faster access to data stored in memory by substantially boosting memory bandwidth and minimizing memory latency. Hyper-Threading technology enables 2 threads to run simultaneously on every processor core, creating 8 virtual cores for improved performance.
The server is equipped with 8GB (4x2GB) built-in registered DIMM (R-DIMM) memory operating at 1066MHz speed, with support for up to 32GB of DDR3 ECC SDRAM memory in 4 slots, for superb application performance. This is particularly helpful when working with large files and memory-intensive applications like graphics, audio, video and scientific programs. ECC provides added layer of reliability by automatically correcting memory errors if they should occur.
The Mac Pro boasts dual 1TB hard drives spinning at 7200rpm to deliver fast read and write performance. The server has the potential for up to 8TB total capacity by adding drives, which is easy, thanks to the cable-free, direct-attach drive system. The Serial ATA drives feature fast 3Gb/s transfer speeds.
Graphics performance is accelerated by an ATI Radeon HD 5770 card, ideal for motion graphics, 3D modeling, rendering, or animation. With 1GB of GDDR5 memory built in, the card is significantly faster than the top-of-the-line graphics cards from the previous generation.
The Mac Pro comes with an 18x SuperDrive CD / DVD Burner, which can supports both single- and double-layer media. Add a second SuperDrive to really streamline workflow, enabling backup to 2 double-layer DVD's simultaneously, letting you export Final Cut Studio projects to a DVD while you import music from a CD into your iTunes library, or simply allowing you to copy burned DVD's with extra speed and ease. The Mac Pro runs on OS x Lion Server and also includes iLife '11, giving you iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand.
