Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer and trainer of all things photographic. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites and videos.
Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008 he started recording and uploading video tutorials to YouTube. These quickly gained a large following and to date his videos have been viewed over 20 million times.
In 2010 Gavin was the winner of Adobe’s “Next Photoshop Evangelist” competition and since then he has given training demonstrations in Photoshop, Lightroom and Photoshop Elements in the UK, Europe and the US.

Photographing a live music performance is an exciting experience but stage lighting isn’t always photographer friendly and leads to high ISO shooting or motion blur. Fortunately, Gavin Hoey has the perfect solution as he transforms his small home studio into a mini music venue.

Using flash rather then stage lights gives Gavin the extra light he needs but limits the effects, so in this video, Gavin runs through three simple set-ups starting with a single speedlight and ending with a five light shot.

As well as careful lighting, Gavin’s other secret is fast dissipating smoke which creates some amazing effects as it quickly turns from the smoke into a light haze.
