Each year Pantone selects the “Color of the Year” as a trend forecast of the colors you can expect to see in graphic design, interior design, fashion design, and more! As soon as the color is announced I start planning my shoots to explore the theme so that when art directors search for these key terms, my images will show up!

This year Pantone selected two colors; Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray. The combo gives strength and warmth when paired together.

For my Pantone-themed shoot, I decided to keep it simple with one light and a DIY headpiece. I used decorative fans ($6.99) to create a textured and layered headpiece. We complimented the headpiece with makeup that pulled in accents of both of the Pantone colors. To bring the gray into the shot, even more, I used a Savage Universal Fashion Gray background.

For this one light setup, I used a Profoto D2 and a Profoto deep white large umbrella with diffusion to create a very soft light source. Placing the light off to the right-hand side of the frame creates a bit of shadow/sculpting to the face and headpiece and therefore more dimension.

The setup was simple, the styling inexpensive, but it was a great way to start off the year in line with 2021 trends! I think the shot looks both warm/welcoming and strong… just like Pantone intended!
