This is the visual roadmap for a shoot whether producing images for a magazine editorial or shooting a major ad campaign. What is a mood board? A mood board is a collection of images that helps to communicate the creative direction of a shoot. Often the images on the mood board show the type of hair, makeup, wardrobe, lighting, and location of the upcoming shoot. Creating clear visuals allows all creatives involved in a shoot to get inspired, prepare and be on the same page! Images on a mood board can be from anywhere! They do not have to be (and typically are not) images that were previously taken by the photographer. The images gathered can be illustrations, photos from Pinterest, paintings, stills from movies, and much more. When a photographer has a very defined style it can be quite easy for a magazine or brand to understand the results that the photographer will achieve based on the mood board they have built. In this video, I show how I create a mood board on canva.com with the theme of \u201cFuchsia Fantasy\u2019 (loosely inspired by Valentino\u2019s recent runway show) in order to direct a creative editorial image. I\u2019ve been using star filters either to achieve in-camera creative techniques or to give a nostalgic vintage feel to some of my beauty work. As you search for star filters, you\u2019ll also discover that there are a lot of different brands and star effects. My recommendation is that when you are looking to buy one, simply look at the sample images to see what the shape of the star looks like. For this demo, I chose the super inexpensive 4x Cross Screen Star Effect. To make this effect show up you\u2019ll need some sort of reflection on your subject. This could be a specular highlight on a piece of jewelry or it could be a reflection off of a piece of glitter. Here we&#039;ve strategically placed star-shaped glitter on the eyes, lips, and cheeks. I decided that my inspiration would be cool midnight glam, so I will be using blue gels and tones. When lighting for this technique, usually I choose a harder light source to help create the reflections and specular highlights required. To create reflections, I also have to consider the angles. If I have the light a bit lower to the subject or a fill light in the front, this will help to bounce more reflections. The other option is to have the subject rotate that head around in order to try to catch the angles required to get those highlights. Thankfully, as you pose your subject you can see the effect as it happens and it&#039;s easy to tell when to ask your subject to pause for the perfect effect. Here\u2019s a breakdown of the lighting: Main light: Magnum reflector to create hard, specular but also flattering light. Fill light: Zoom reflector with blue gel to fill in a blue tone to the shadows. Background light: Bare bulb with blue gel (I started with a 20-degree grid and later removed it). This creates a very subtle separation on the background and unifies the color in the scene. In the past, I have created fantasy images with body paint and huge pink hair, colorful gel images with my model covered in stickers, or a dramatic sultry shot bathed in late-day sunlight. This year my wardrobe stylist found this incredible heart-shaped dress and I was thrilled to shoot a red-on-red theme. Let\u2019s build the image step-by-step. Step 1: We chose a Savage Universal Primary Red seamless background to help with the monochromatic color harmony. Step 2: Next, we added the main light to the subject\u2019s face, using a Westcott Optical spot with a slice of light on her face and torso. Step 3: We proceeded to add a second strobe with another Westcott Optical Spot, this time with a Heart Gobo shape to mimic the bottom of the dress. Step 4: For the final strobe we placed it on a floor stand directly behind the subject and added a red gel. This created rim lights on the subject and separated her from the background. Step 5: To add a bit of environment and depth to the shot we added Haze in a Can aka Atmosphere Aerosol behind the subject. When backlit this haze creates a sense of moodiness and texture in the image. Step 6: SHOOT! But the high-end look is easier to recreate than you may think. In this video, I will teach you how to achieve the color gradient background effect using three strobes and two colored gels. How to build a gradient background step-by-step: Step 1: Setting up the First Strobe &amp; Orange Colored Gel I place the first strobe with a saturated orange-colored gel upwards and close to the white\/gray backdrop. This creates a gradient effect with the color changing from yellow-orange near the light source to a deeper orange further away. Step 2: Adding the Second Strobe &amp; Magenta Colored Gel Next, I position the second strobe directly behind my subject on a floor stand and attach a magenta gel to it. This creates a saturated color close to the strobe that gradually fades and blends into the orange, creating the gradient effect. Step 3: Introducing the Main Light Then, I introduce the main light that will illuminate my subject \u2013 making sure it does not spill onto the background to keep the colors vibrant. I use this light to cast a narrow beam on my subject&#039;s face, which is why a light with a grid or one that offers restricted light, like the Westcott Optical Spot is my go-to. Now that we&#039;ve set up our lights, it&#039;s time to get the shot. In this video, I am shooting with a Canon R5 and a Canon RF 24-105 lens, which provides flexibility and sharpness. The trend of colored gel photography in fashion is absolutely captivating - it is vibrant, and daring, and makes any backdrop look interesting. Although I achieved this effect with strobe lights, you can definitely do it with continuous lights too. The possibilities of colored gels are endless.
