This far-north locale brims with natural beauty, from towering icebergs and peaks to dramatic fjords and northern lights. These and many of the island\u2019s backdrops will soon become easier to reach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: A Photographer\u2019s Guide to Greenland: An emerging and can\u2019t-beat adventure travel destination\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/793vHGa3NtSJDOvfisQo9e?si=Y55G3GJxQUO_wj_DLytUYg&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In summer 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/avgeekery.com\/uniteds-big-summer-2025-expansion\/\">United Airlines<\/a> will provide a long-awaited link between Newark, New Jersey, and Greenland\u2019s capital city, Nuuk. This route, as well as several new flight paths between Greenland and Europe and Canada, will make reaching the island\u2019s far-flung tundra and ice more doable. The culture, nature, adventure, and, of course, photography keep me coming back\u2014but it\u2019s critical to note that any trip to Greenland requires some prep work, especially if you\u2019re traveling on your own.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll share the ins and outs (and watch-outs) of a photography trip to Greenland, from must-have gear to landscape scouting and, of course, what to photograph while you\u2019re there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. How to travel around Greenland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Stephanie-solo-backpacking-in-Greenland-via-drone_Stephanie-Vermillion-1024x774.jpg\" alt=\"Stephanie solo backpacking in Greenland (via drone) Stephanie Vermillion\" class=\"wp-image-108480\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Stephanie Vermillion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenland is an appealing destination for people who\u2019ve fallen in love with Iceland, but it\u2019s important to know that, especially transit-wise, the two islands are hardly the same. In Iceland, it\u2019s easy to get a rental car and loop around the land of fire and ice, stopping to photograph various landscapes at your leisure. Greenland is a different, more dramatic beast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtually no roads connect the towns across Greenland, a land mass that\u2019s over 20 times larger than Iceland. Plus, the world\u2019s second-largest ice sheet covers 80 percent of the island\u2019s center. Your best option to get from place to place is ferry, cruise, or plane; these often come with delays due to weather, so it\u2019s important to be flexible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"636\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Camping-on-the-Greenland-Ice-Sheet_By-Stephanie-Vermillion-1024x636.jpg\" alt=\"Camping on the Greenland Ice Sheet_By Stephanie Vermillion\" class=\"wp-image-108489\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Stephanie Vermillion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of trying to hit all of the Greenland highlights in one trip\u2014that\u2019s downright impossible unless you move there or have a hefty budget and generous vacation time\u2014I\u2019d recommend choosing one or two areas to focus on. Fortunately, everywhere is picturesque, with landscapes and nightscapes that frequently change with the moody weather.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Photogenic spots in Greenland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"677\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Zodiacs-heading-to-the-Iluissat-Icefjord_-Greenland-Photography-_-BY-Stephanie-Vermillion-1024x677.jpg\" alt=\"Zodiacs heading to the Iluissat Icefjord_ Greenland Photography _ BY Stephanie Vermillion\" class=\"wp-image-108482\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Stephanie Vermillion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to photographing in Greenland, you really can\u2019t go wrong with your destination. Even former international transit hub Kangerlussuaq, which can feel largely industrial in the main part of town, is photo-worthy once you go beyond the city limits. I had a bucket-list chance to photograph musk oxen on a seven-mile hike from town, for example. Plus, Kangerlussuaq provides arguably the best access to the ice sheet. I went camping on the ice sheet with <a href=\"https:\/\/albatros-arctic-circle.com\/camp-ice-cap\">Albatros Arctic Circle<\/a> in 2022, and, while that was the coldest I\u2019ve ever been, the resulting adventure images are still among my favorite.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Nuuk, the site of the new international airport, travelers have a bevy of photographic backdrops. Take a boat trip out into the fjords with <a href=\"https:\/\/watertaxi.gl\/en\/\">Nuuk Water Taxi<\/a>, or spend the night in a glass igloo at <a href=\"https:\/\/inukhostels.gl\/en\/\">Inuk Hostel<\/a> to watch the fjord change hues as the day wears on. Nuuk\u2019s old town is equally picturesque, with colorful houses, old buildings, and a waterfront with icebergs floating by.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Nuuk-Waterfront-Greenland-_-Greenland-Photography-_-By-Stephanie-Vermillion-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Nuuk Waterfront Greenland _ Greenland Photography _ By Stephanie Vermillion\" class=\"wp-image-108484\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Stephanie Vermillion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, I also found myself in South Greenland, a topographical treat of snowy mountains, vast fjords, and myriad sheep farms\u2014a staple of the region\u2019s culture. Of all the regions I\u2019ve visited, South Greenland had the most dramatic and mountainous scenery. In fact, I pulled out my camera to photograph through the window on the flight into transit town Narsarsuaq. While you\u2019re here, consider partaking in a backcountry sheep-farm trek; my overnight backpacking trip with icefjord kayaking, sheep-dotted trails, and surreal auroras sent me home with tens of thousands of images.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. What to photograph while you\u2019re here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I adore the diversity of photography subjects in Greenland\u2014it makes each trip so different. One day I\u2019m photographing reindeer, the next a forest or fjord, and by night, there\u2019s a good shot I\u2019ll be capturing some auroras\u2014or an entire night\u2019s worth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"734\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Igloo-in-Greenland_Adventure-Resort-Photography_Glamping_By-Stephanie-Vermillion-1024x734.jpg\" alt=\"Igloo in Greenland Adventure Resort Photography Glamping By Stephanie Vermillion\" class=\"wp-image-108485\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Stephanie Vermillion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What you photograph will vary by destination, but as a general rule of thumb, be ready for jaw-dropping landscape shots, interesting icebergs (try to capture these around golden hour\u2014the lighting is surreal), wildlife, colorful towns, northern lights, and stars. Nearly everywhere, even the capital city, sees skies dark enough for auroras and stars to shine. I photographed some of my favorite Greenland aurora snaps right from the Nuuk waterfront.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want some inspiration for Greenland photography, I recommend following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/emilstach\/\">local Greenlandic photographer Emil Stach on Instagram<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Don\u2019t skimp on gear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenland is not for the faint of heart, especially when it comes to weather. Be ready for nearly four seasons in one day (minus summer\u2014the temperatures here rarely get above the 60s). Bring warm base layers, an insulated hat and gloves, a water- and wind-proof jacket, warm socks (or waterproof if you\u2019re hiking the ice sheet), and waterproof gear like dry bags or a waterproof backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Auroras-in-Narsarsuaq-South-Greenland_By-Stephanie-Vermillion-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Auroras in Narsarsuaq, South Greenland By Stephanie Vermillion\" class=\"wp-image-108490\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Stephanie Vermillion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Your camera gear will largely depend on what you\u2019re hoping to photograph, but if you\u2019re a generalist, I would say be ready for anything. I bring my entire kit on every trip because I don\u2019t want to miss a Greenland moment. This includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/isoa7r4.html\">Sony A7RIV<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/isoa7m3.html\">Sony A7III<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/iso1418gm.html\">Sony FE 14mm f\/1.8 lens<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/iso2018g.html\">Sony FE 20mm f\/1.8 lens<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/iso5518.html\">Sony Sonnar 55mm f\/1.8 lens<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/iso100400e.html\">Sony FE 100-400m lens<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Photography\/Tripods-and-Supports\/Tripods\">travel tripod<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/jogprig.html\">Joby Gorillapod<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plenty of extra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Computers\/Digital-Storage-and-Duplication\/Memory-Cards\">memory cards<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Computers\/Drives-comma-SSD-and-Storage\/External-Portable-Drives\">External hard drive<\/a> for photo dumping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Photography\/Camera-Accessories\/Camera-Batteries\">batteries<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/hahd4635.html\">Lens warmer<\/a> for colder nights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/sh520155.html\">Shimoda backpack<\/a> because it\u2019s built for the elements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Travel with local people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The tourism industry is relatively new in Greenland; many hope it can provide an alternative path to more destructive revenue avenues like mining. But in order for it to yield a positive impact, we as travelers need to visit with sustainable and responsible tourism in mind\u2014and more than anything, that means traveling locally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sermilik-Hostel-in-South-Greenland-_-Greenland-Sheep-Farm-Holiday-_-BY-Stephanie-Vermillion-1024x628.jpg\" alt=\"Sermilik Hostel in South Greenland Greenland Sheep Farm Holiday By Stephanie Vermillion\" class=\"wp-image-108483\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Stephanie Vermillion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are many cruise ship options to visit Greenland, I\u2019d highly recommend visiting by land for the photographic freedom (especially if you\u2019re hoping to photograph the northern lights). Plus, doing this means you can work with local tourism outfitters who will directly benefit from your visit. For that, I have plenty of recommendations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Nuuk, Two Ravens runs incredible adventure tours into the mountains and fjords just outside the capital. They have day and multi-day tours that show you the best of the region\u2014including a <a href=\"https:\/\/tworavens.gl\/tour\/sleepover-in-a-real-igloo\/\">sleepover in a real igloo<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/tworavens.gl\/tour\/mountaintop-sleepover\/\">snoozing atop a mountain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"715\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Guide-Klaus-Larsen-trekking-on-the-Greenland-Ice-Sheet_Stephanie-Vermillion-1024x715.jpg\" alt=\"Guide Klaus Larsen trekking on the Greenland Ice Sheet by Stephanie Vermillion\" class=\"wp-image-108487\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Stephanie Vermillion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Qaqortoq, South Greenland\u2019s main city, try female-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/visitgreenland.com\/local-providers\/pink-peak-tours\/\">Pink Peak Tours<\/a> for hiking, aurora hunting, or a cultural immersion where you can see (and responsibly photograph) elements of Greenlandic culture like traditional dress, design, and food.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you find yourself in South Greenland, I cannot recommend a stay at <a href=\"https:\/\/sermilikhostel.com\/\">Sermilik Hostel<\/a>\u2014a working sheep farm with a cozy guesthouse\u2014enough. The farm sits beside an iceberg-dotted fjord, with hiking trails, kayaking, and Viking ruins to explore and photograph, although my favorite thing outside of getting to know the farm owners was watching the auroras sashay across the inky sky all night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\"
