Planning is a crucial part of running a small business, and the start of the year is an ideal time to set a plan for the remainder of the year. Take a moment to create a plan for the New Year. What will keep you busy every day, and how will you make ends meet? Are there any new avenues you\u2019d like to explore, or anything you need to address immediately to set up the rest of the year for success? These are all questions you should address as you begin to think about how you\u2019re going to tackle solopreneurship in the New Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A business without a plan is destined to fail, so make sure your plan is specific and then follow up on the rest of the year to execute that plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set Goals for the New Year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to planning, it is also important to come up with goals. Goals can help keep you on track and give you something to reach for. Set your goals to be attainable yet something that you\u2019ll have to work hard to reach. At the same time, plan how you can reach that goal. A goal without a plan is a recipe for a goal you\u2019ll quickly forget. But with a plan, goals are not only attainable but also rewarding when you reach that final milestone.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goals should be intertwined within your plans for the New Year, so craft these two things together. The most successful solopreneurs are goal-oriented. So, give this a try this year if you haven\u2019t set goals for your business before in the past!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of my favorite things to do in the New Year is to reach out to past clients who have treated me well. These clients often have updated spending budgets and may be creating goals or plans of their own. It\u2019s unlikely that they\u2019ll think of you and reach out, but if you put yourself at the forefront of their email inbox, you\u2019d be surprised how often you\u2019ll be able to find work. The earlier in the year you can do this, the better. Budgets are often allocated quickly. So, if you can reach out in the first week of the year, you\u2019ll have the most success with this tip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This tip is perfect for creators working with brands. However, it can also work well for creators who work with individuals, too. Make sure you\u2019re collecting an email list of past clients so you can reach out. If you don\u2019t have this built yet, set it up for the New Year!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get Gear Cleaned and Serviced<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t let equipment get in the way of your success in 2026. The start of the year is a great time to send your gear in to get cleaned and serviced. If you don\u2019t want to send in your equipment, you can do a lot of the cleaning yourself, and oftentimes this will cost less than $20. While you\u2019re at it, plug in your devices and check for any firmware updates. Oftentimes, cameras and even lenses can update firmware, which fixes bugs, optimizes performance, and can even unlock certain features from time to time. Check the specific make and model of your equipment to see how you can update the firmware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing squashes creativity like equipment failures. Make sure your gear is running at tip-top shape at the start of the New Year. Additionally, ensure it stays in excellent condition by doing a yearly cleaning. This is a great time to clean your camera\u2019s sensor, take apart your tripods for cleaning, and go through your bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invest in a New Skill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
