But over the past few weeks, I\u2019ve taken the time to actually <em>learn<\/em> how flash works, and it all finally makes sense!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article will cover the basics I wish I knew sooner:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What flash actually does<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The difference between on-camera and off-camera flash<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to get creative with motion and light<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning Flash Basics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Flash photography becomes a lot less overwhelming once you understand one simple idea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flash light = subject. The camera fires a small pre-flash and decides how bright it thinks your flash should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>TTL = <\/strong>quick and convenient<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Manual = <\/strong>control and consistency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re shooting events or moving fast, TTL is great. But if you want repeatable results, it\u2019s best to understand how to use manual flash for more consistency and control.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you understand how ambient and flash exposure interact, flash stops feeling scary and starts to feel more in your control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>On-Camera vs Off-Camera Flash<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you know how flash works with your camera settings, the next step is understanding the <em>direction<\/em> of light. This alone can completely transform your photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>On-Camera Flash<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On-camera flash fires from the exact same direction as the lens. You now get to choose where the light comes from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Front light<\/strong> \u2192 clean and bright<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>45\u00ba light<\/strong> \u2192 sculpted, flattering, more cinematic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Side light<\/strong> \u2192 dramatic, moody, lots of contrast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Backlight<\/strong> \u2192 separation and glow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the same flash, just placed somewhere more intentional where you have more control over what the final look will be. One of the most fun techniques is the <strong>shutter drag<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a shutter drag?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A shutter drag happens when you use a <strong>slow shutter speed<\/strong> along with flash. The <strong>slow shutter<\/strong> captures ambient light and motion blur, while the <strong>flash<\/strong> freezes your subject. You end up with an image that feels energetic, dreamy, and full of motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Front Curtain vs Rear Curtain Sync<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The timing of the flash affects how the motion blur looks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Front curtain sync<\/strong> \u2192 flash fires at the <em>start<\/em>, so motion appears in front of your subject<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rear curtain sync<\/strong> \u2192 flash fires at the <em>end<\/em>, so motion trails <em>behind<\/em> your subject (this usually looks more natural and artistic)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to try it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with something like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ISO 200<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>f\/4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shutter 1\/5\u20131\/10s<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flash on rear curtain sync<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Have your subject move, or move your camera slightly \u2014 and let the flash freeze the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This technique is messy and unpredictable, but that\u2019s often the best part about it.
