I am primarily a wildlife and landscape photographer, which means Pixelmator Pro was the first app in the Apple bundle to catch my attention. But in the comparison of Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop, is it powerful enough to convince me to ditch the old classic: Adobe Photoshop? Is it reliable enough to take on the difficult task of assisting a professional photographer? Here is what I found.

Comparing Stories

Adobe Photoshop is a legend. It’s taught in schools worldwide and is probably the first image processing software you added to your resume. Yes, it has a steep learning curve and is cumbersome here and there, but it is familiar and resonant.

However, there comes a moment in every photographer’s life when it’s time to consider a Photoshop alternative and weigh Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop.

Pricing and Workflow

For many, the price dictates this moment. Photoshop has become expensive. Even bundled with Adobe Lightroom, it is $19.99 per month. It offers only a short 7-day trial to newcomers, which, let’s face it, is hardly enough time to find your way around Photoshop and actually use it for something if you are a complete beginner. Pixelmator Pro is more affordable and offers a 1-month trial period. There’s a point to be won here in the Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop debate.

For others, myself included, the focus on workflow is what dictates the shift. I would like to have fast, intuitive software with customizable tools.

Above all, it should be flexible enough to give me full control over everything when editing my photos. I am an Apple user. Pixelmator Pro’s big promise is to find its way around my computer and optimize performance based on the resources it finds. Additionally, to provide me with access to my projects on an iPad if I want. This sounds very appealing.

However, I can’t disregard the pool of features in favor of budget and workflow. I need software capable of RAW processing, batch processing, luminosity masks, focus stacking, precise image adjustments, and much more. So, let’s dive into the Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop for photo editing.

Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop Battle of the Features

Both programs have extensive feature lists. They are built on the same structure, and I was happy to find in Pixelmator Pro the tools I’m familiar with in Photoshop (in a very similar arrangement, too), such as layers, various selection tools, masking tools, brushes for local adjustments (e.g., change brightness, remove imperfections, clone, etc.), image manipulation tools (e.g., distort, wrap), and drawing and text tools. In the context of Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop, Pixelmator Pro has a simpler approach, which makes it easier to learn. However, the control is less precise. Here is an example.

You have the Adjustment Layers in Photoshop that, combined with layer masks, allow you to locally apply 18 adjustments such as Hue/Saturation, Exposure, Color Balance, Clarity and Dehaze, Curves, Levels, and so on. You can apply them using a brush or on a selection. In the Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop comparison, Pixelmator Pro’s answer to this is individual tools for local lightening/darkening, saturation adjustments, and sharpening/softening. It covers the basics but not the entire spectrum. Photoshop also automatically creates a new adjustment layer, whilst Pixelmator Pro leaves this responsibility to you. But it’s a matter of taste whether you prefer to have things done for you or be in absolute control.

That being said, I like the Pixelmator Pro resize feature more. It’s straightforward, providing me with all the data I need and nothing more, and the quality is outstanding. Because I already use Apple’s Shortcuts, I can get around the fact that batch processing is not built into Pixelmator Pro but enabled via Shortcuts. I’m OK with using Shortcuts and AppleScript to automate resizing, converting file formats, and so on.

Important advanced features are missing?

As a nature photographer, luminosity masks are an important part of my workflow for editing landscape photos. The lack of this or a similar feature to select based on a particular tonal range will likely be a deal breaker for many landscape photographers evaluating Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop.

As a macro photographer, I would love tools to automatically focus-stack images. However, here I am also a bit disappointed. Pixelmator Pro also lacks the Color Primaries tool available in Photoshop with Camera Raw Filter (under Calibration). It’s one of the tools that has become a fundamental part of my workflow. All my images get a dose of blue saturation added, which not only affects the blue colors but also makes all colors more vibrant and come alive. As I shoot mostly in RAW, the quality of the RAW processing tools matters a lot to me.

When you open a RAW file in Photoshop, it automatically opens the Camera Raw Filter window, allowing you to make dedicated adjustments before even getting to the “photoshopping” part. However, I often take several round-trips into Camera RAW and use it as another filter, instead of just a pre-processing step. You can do a lot of adjustments with the Camera Raw Filter. Pixelmator Pro tries its best to keep up by supporting RAW files, creating dedicated RAW layers for them, and allowing you to revert destructive edits made on these layers. The app also allows you to export RAW files. Nevertheless, the level of specialization is lower, and I can feel the difference.

So, where does Pixelmator Pro shine?

I highlighted Photoshop’s flexibility when it comes to adjustment layers and masking, but this is also a little cumbersome if all you need is a little saturation or sharpness. Something I will always apply locally, so why should I start with applying it to the whole layer and then mask it out or in using layer masks? In Pixelmator Pro, you start with a brush.

I also like that you can immediately decide which tonal range you want to add some clarity to. In general, when it comes to ease of use, it is a sure win. The overall interface is clutter-free. Tools like the Brush tool are simple but still powerful, and more intuitive than in Photoshop. The same goes for the Text tool. It was very easy to get started with editing text or making curved text. So if you are doing more graphical work that requires text, you will appreciate this. / Caption: With the brush tool activated, these are the options you get when right-clicking. Pixelmator options are simple and easy. If you want to lower the opacity in either app, you need to use keyboard shortcuts (keys: 0-9) or find the brush setting in the right side panel.

Easy on Hardware Requirements

Just because I was curious, I looked at what Activity Monitor recorded while I was testing Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop. Energy-wise, they scored the same. CPU-wise and memory-wise, Photoshop scored almost five times more than Pixelmator Pro in both categories. Apple’s claim that Creative Studio apps are optimized for your Mac stands, even though just looking at the activity monitor is not a real performance test, but more of an indicator.

Is Pixelmator Pro or Photoshop for You?

To answer this question, I would separate old Photoshop users like me from newcomers who don’t use any image processing software now. I would also separate Apple users from those using other operating systems because Pixelmator Pro is optimized for the former ones and makes more sense for them to opt for this app. Also, it makes sense to use Pixelmator Pro if you have already subscribed to Apple Creator Studio and use the rest of the apps in the bundle. The same applies to Photoshop.

If you pay for Adobe Creative Cloud, use Premiere, Lightroom, or any other app from the Adobe ecosystem, it makes more sense to go for Photoshop. If you’ve just started with photography, graphic design, or any other field related to image processing and creation, my advice is to consider Pixelmator Pro very seriously.

However, if, like me, you predominantly shoot in RAW, need luminosity masks, and focus stacking features, Photoshop seems to be a better option. This was what made me stick with Photoshop in the end. I need those precise RAW tools that let me fine-tune each aspect of my photograph. I also use local adjustments and filters quite a lot, and although I appreciate the simplicity of Pixelmator Pro, Photoshop’s complexity isn’t an issue, but I agree that it might be for many. So, if you really need a feature, as complex and time-consuming as it may be, go for the app that provides it.

Otherwise, choose the software that feels comfortable, intuitive, and in sync with your other software.

Considering Other Creative Fields

You should also take into account when evaluating Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop that they don’t target photographers per se. Their users may be graphic designers, illustrators, product designers, visual content creators, and so on. Pixelmator Pro’s exhaustive library of mocks and templates for digital and physical product design is irrelevant to me.

For you, it may not be. Having access to Adobe Stock is not something a photographer appreciates. A graphic designer may have a different opinion. So, look at all the aspects that matter to you and give each program a try. As short as the free trials may be, they still provide valuable insight.

Final Thoughts

I have been comparing Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop, focusing on the features a professional photographer specializing in wildlife and landscape photography may be interested in. There were features such as RAW processing, filters, and workflow that caught my attention, helping me decide between the two programs. While for me Photoshop stands out for its powerful Camera Raw Filter and precise color correction tools, I agree that Pixelmator Pro offers a streamlined experience for Mac users and works well for beginners. Ultimately, the choice belongs to you.

Photographer Peter Dam compares Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop to see if it’s finally time to ditch Adobe.

[17778
697,18781
post-117755","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-photo-editing","tag-photoshop-697","tag-pixelmator-pro

Pixelmator Pro vs Photoshop: Do I Make the Shift?
