Want to be a better photographer? It’s about much more than f\/stops and shutter speeds. Here are 101 things you should know about photography if you want to become really, really good at it. \nAnd so, without further ado, let’s dive right in…<\/p>\n

101 things to know about photography:<\/p>\n

1. It\u2019s not the camera; it\u2019s the ten inches behind it that\u2019s important.<\/p>\n

2. Never photograph a child without asking permission from a parent first.<\/p>\n

3. \u201cWhen you get lucky, be ready\u201d\u2026Eddie Adams.<\/p>\n

4. Be sure to always have a tripod<\/a> with you.<\/p>\n

5. Light is everything.<\/p>\n

6. Remove the Histogram from your camera. It\u2019s not what you want to be looking at when you have seconds of light left.<\/p>\n

7. Get up close and personal to your subject.<\/p>\n

8. Always have a roll of gaffer tape<\/a> and WD-40 with you.<\/p>\n

9. Crop in the camera<\/a> so you\u2019ll know where the edges of your frame and the four corners are.<\/p>\n

10. Shadows are your best friend.<\/p>\n

11. Clip the highlights for more energy.<\/p>\n

12. See past first impressions.<\/p>\n

13. Always consider the scene and its outcome.<\/p>\n

14. It\u2019s not what you put into a picture that counts, it\u2019s what you don\u2019t put in that matters.<\/p>\n

15. Always carry a camera<\/a> with you.<\/p>\n

16. Marry someone whose father owns a big camera store<\/a>.<\/p>\n

17. Bracketing in the camera<\/a> will make you a better photographer.<\/p>\n

18. It\u2019s ok to get dirt on the front of your shirt when you\u2019re composing a photo.<\/p>\n

19. Always shoot in RAW.<\/p>\n

20. Lens shades<\/a> help.<\/p>\n

21. Pick up the trash in your composition before shooting.<\/p>\n

22. Sometimes a pretty sunset to you is just another pretty sunset to someone else.<\/p>\n

23. Challenge yourself. Try shooting with your least favorite lens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

24. Only show your best photographs.<\/p>\n

25. Study the \u2018Masters.\u2019 They were here way before you.<\/p>\n

30. Break all the rules you can, but first, I suggest you learn them.<\/p>\n

32. Let someone who knows what they\u2019re doing clean your sensor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

33. Bring along protection<\/a> for your camera, and shoot in the rain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

34. Photographic prints<\/a> make great Christmas gifts.<\/p>\n

35. Golden light is the best light.<\/p>\n

36. Don\u2019t let your camera<\/a> fall into a Lava Pool.<\/p>\n

37. Manufacturing excuses for your photos is not cool.<\/p>\n

38. Underexposing looks better than overexposing.<\/p>\n

39. Make pictures, don\u2019t just take them.<\/p>\n

40. Martinis and photography don\u2019t mix very well.<\/p>\n

41. Taking art classes will improve your photography.<\/p>\n

42. The Rule of Thirds is boring.<\/p>\n

55. Shoot to live, live to shoot.<\/p>\n

56. Stick with one ISO, and you\u2019ll never have to worry about switching back.<\/p>\n

57. Back up all your images all the time.<\/p>\n

58. Controlled distortion can work.<\/p>\n

59. Always brake for photographs.<\/p>\n

61. We perceive in a 2×3 aspect ratio (a rectangle).<\/p>\n

62. An active imagination is the Fountain of Youth.<\/p>\n

63. Learn to see, feel and sense the ever-changing Light.<\/p>\n

64. The background is just as important.<\/p>\n

65. Have your subject walking or looking out of the frame.<\/p>\n

66. Don\u2019t show the sky in bad light.<\/p>\n

67. Vertical formats have more energy than horizontals.<\/p>\n

68. Make sure that when you format your memory card<\/a>, you really wanted to.<\/p>\n

69. Sometimes when more is better, too much is just right.<\/p>\n

70. Always know the direction of the light.<\/p>\n

71. Set your camera on AWB and \u2018Fuhgetaboutit\u2019.<\/p>\n

72. Don\u2019t come home with an empty memory card<\/a>.<\/p>\n

73. Including Patterns in our photos is good; breaking the rhythm of the pattern is even better.<\/p>\n

74. Photographers are artists who use a different medium.<\/p>\n

75. A triple-colored mat won\u2019t make a bad photograph look better.<\/p>\n

76. A glass of wine after a great sunset shoot is intoxicating.<\/p>\n

77. Balance the Negative Space and Positive Space.<\/p>\n

78. \u201cBeen there shot that\u201d is not a good thing to say.<\/p>\n

79. Create \u2018energy\u2019 in your photographs.<\/p>\n

80. Try to lead the viewer around your composition.<\/p>\n

84. Be objective, not subjective, when editing your pictures.<\/p>\n

85. There\u2019s nothing like seeing the world through a viewfinder<\/a>.<\/p>\n

86. 1\/60th of a second at F\/8 is the same exposure as 1\/125th of a second at F\/5.6.<\/p>\n

87. Color communicates ideas.<\/p>\n

88. If you had to choose between Lightroom<\/a> and Photoshop<\/a>, pick Lightroom<\/a>.<\/p>\n

89. Follow Photography Blogs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

90. Don\u2019t loan equipment to friends without including this phrase, \u201cyou break it, and it\u2019s yours.\u201d<\/p>\n

91. Take portraits<\/a> with wide-angle lens<\/a>.<\/p>\n

93. Give the viewer several ways to enter and leave the frame.<\/p>\n

95. Setting your WB to cloudy on an overcast day won\u2019t necessarily make your picture look better.<\/p>\n

96. More shots per hour.<\/p>\n

97. HDR prints sell like hotcakes in the decorative center of a Wal-Mart.<\/p>\n

98. The early bird always catches the best light as well as the worm.<\/p>\n

99. Use \u2018gesture\u2019 to communicate an emotional response.<\/p>\n

100. When you have a gray day, be funny. Humor conquers all.<\/p>\n
