During Antiquity, several artists of the day portrayed likenesses of themselves in painting and in creating sculptures. It has become a \u201cfun\u201d form of personal expression that has unmistakably littered social media and dating websites over the last decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21476\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21476\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21476 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/04.-Selfies-1.jpg\" alt=\"04. LinkedIn is a great example of where one might find more professional portraits representing the professional side of its owner since LinkedIn primarily connects people to businesses and businesses to businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21477\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21477\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21477 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/05.-LinkedIn-1.jpg\" alt=\"05. For professional purposes, however, you may want to consider the quality of the image when presenting yourself as a businessperson because while photography is a creative process, it\u2019s also at least 80% business. So put the smartphone back down and let me show you 4 ways to create your own <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professional<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> self-portrait.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Preparations Prior to Any Method<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several different steps that are important to take care of prior to shooting your professional self-portrait.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hair &amp; Makeup<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to any preparations or method I mention here, in order for your portrait to really stand out and look professional, I always suggest having your hair and makeup prepared by a professional hairstylist and makeup artist vs. doing it on your own. Why? The camera picks up everything, but not always necessarily in a good way! For some of you, your portrait might be your calling card. Invest in your hair and skin appearance as you would your wardrobe.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21478\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21478\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21478 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/06.-Hair-Makeup-1.jpg\" alt=\"06. Gentlemen, actors and models wear makeup &#8211; so there\u2019s nothing to be ashamed of in preparing for your portrait in this manner too. Remember, the camera picks up <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; including every pore on your face. Trust me when I say, hire a makeup artist to save yourself time in post cloning and healing your skin so much that you lose the likeness of yourself in your finished portrait.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hairstylist can also be a great tool to have on set as your hair could be perfect when you\u2019re looking in the mirror, but once you get to your modeling stool or into pose for the shot, you will have strays everywhere that you didn\u2019t notice before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Your Space<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll want a clean shooting space where you will limit any potential problems or hazards during your shoot. Here are a few of steps I took for setting up for my shoot for this article. It will always vary depending on the type and location of the self-portrait shoot I do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. Place your posing stool or chair where you intend to sit (unless you intend to stand). I suggest 6 feet away from any flat backdrop to minimize\/eliminate shadows behind you.<\/p>\n<p>2. Take a piece of painter\u2019s tape and place a big \u201cX\u201d where your stool or chair is (or where you plan to stand). This is so that you stay in the same spot as one of the methods below requires manual focus, which requires you to be in the same focal plane of your original manually set focus &#8211; to stay in focus.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21479\" style=\"width: 248px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/07.-Painters-Tape-1.jpg\" alt=\"07. Set up a tether cord (that is specific to your camera) from your camera to the laptop or computer. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Computers\/Computer-Accessories\/Computer-Cables-and-Adapters\/Computer-Device-Cables\/Tether-Tools~USB-Cables-and-Adapters\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tether Tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes a whole line of tethering supplies specific to your camera model. Just be sure to ask an Adorama associate which cable will work with your camera. I would suggest a 15-foot cord for a smaller area and longer for a larger area. It\u2019s always better to have too much than not enough! Be sure to also have any necessary pocket wizards or tool of equal use set up for your lightsource.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9.Set up the light modifiers you intend to use for your shoot. Ladies, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/searchsite\/default.aspx?searchinfo=beauty+dishes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beauty dishes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Lighting-and-Studio\/Light-Modifiers-and-Reflectors\/Softboxes-and-Accessories\/Softboxes?term=softboxes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">softboxes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are your best friend when going for a classic portrait. You could consider adding a grid or working with your background, positioning and camera settings to make it a bit more edgy. Gentlemen, grids will give you a more raw, masculine look. I personally have and use a reflector holder for when I do not have an assistant. My weapon of choice is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/PFLDHC.html?RRref=productPage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photoflex Telescopic LiteDisc Holder for 12-32\u201d Portable Reflectors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on any light stand that will stand at 3-4 feet from the floor and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/lstgrsw.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastolite 32\u201d Collapsible Triangular Reflector<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for headshots and close-up portraits<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21487\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21487\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21487 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/15.-Setup-Reflector-1.jpg\" alt=\"15. An additional step to your setup in this method is to set the focus manually so as to capture you completely in focus. There are two ways to do this<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21489\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21489\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21489 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/17.-Manual-Focus-1.jpg\" alt=\"17. Manual-Focus\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/17.-Manual-Focus-1.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/17.-Manual-Focus-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Set your camera to manual focus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.\u00a0Then, set your focus for where you will be sitting in one of two ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place a tall object (something that at least hits your eye level) on your seat and manually focus on that object in the area where your eyes will be, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaving your tripod in place, take your camera off of the tripod and sit where you plan to sit or stand for your self-portrait (marking that spot with an \u201cX\u201d). Use your camera and manually focus back on the tripod.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either of these two ways will get your focused on the distance between where you will sit\/stand and from where your camera\/tripod will be standing and shooting you.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, set your camera to timer mode. This is either done on a dial on the outside of the camera or in the menu of your camera.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21490\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21490\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21490 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/18.-Timer-Method-01-1.jpg\" alt=\"18. Timer-Method-01\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/18.-Timer-Method-01-1.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/18.-Timer-Method-01-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Set your camera to timer mode.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Now, in the menu of your camera, set your preferred settings for your timer mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set the delay for the first image to capture. Give yourself enough time to get back to your seat after you press the shutter button. I find between 6-10 seconds to be plenty of time to get back to my seat and strike a pose.<\/li>\n<li>Next, set the number of shots you want to take in succession. This is good so get a succession of shots or poses before having to get up again to press the shutter button. Between 3 and 5 is a good number so that you can go back and check the images before continuing to shoot more.<\/li>\n<li>Last, select the time intervals between shots. I find 3 seconds to be a perfect amount of time to position myself into a new pose when shooting in succession.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21491\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21491\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21491 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/19.-Timer-Method-02-1.jpg\" alt=\"19. Remotes are probably the best way to capture great composition in your self-portrait without having to run back and forth to the camera to press the shutter button. It allows you to position yourself the way you want before taking the shot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With most camera\/remote combinations, you should be able to set your camera to use autofocus for this method. This is something you will have to test or read up on in your camera\u2019s user manual to be certain.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21488\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21488\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21488 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/16.-Timer-Method-Setup-1.jpg\" alt=\"16. Choose a tiny remote control so that you have more flexibility in posing without the remote showing in your hand. I find the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/nkmll3.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nikon ML-L3 IR Remote Control Transmitter<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be a perfect size for my needs and it just so happens to work with my Nikon D750 camera. Check with an Adorama associate on what small remote options there are for \u00a0your camera model.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21494\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21494\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21494 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/22.-Remote-Method-1.jpg\" alt=\"22. I kept my mouse in my lap (on my knee) for this shot. Once you\u2019ve connected your camera and your phone, you should be able to use your phone app to create images.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an example, I am a Nikon shooter and use the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility. Once I open the app up on my smartphone (here an iPhone 6), I am faced with the option to Take Photos or View Photos. I choose to Take Photos.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21502\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21502\" style=\"width: 534px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21502 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/30.-WiFi-Method-02-1.jpg\" alt=\"30.
