Wait a minute! The bigger the group, the bigger the flash! Not necessarily. With the tech packed into Speedlights and cameras nowadays, the old adage of &#8220;go big or go home&#8221; is not always true.<\/p>\n<p>The three pics in this article were all shot with the same light shaper. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/lslu5038jm.html\">A Lastolite 4 in 1 umbrella<\/a>. Convertible to four different styles of shaper, the baseline umbrella aspect of this tool is 51\u2033 across. Big enough for a group, very lovely for a person.<\/p>\n<p>And with the redoubtable group above, I figured I better bring my best game, and good light. Mixed in on the bench there are country music stalwarts:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kentuckyheadhunters.net\/\">The Kentucky Headhunters<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackstonecherry.com\/\">Black Stone Cherry<\/a>. Great folks to work with, and patient as hell. (One thing about rockin\u2019 country bands\u2013they didn\u2019t mind posing in the loft of a barn in Kentucky in July. We\u2019re talking over a hundred degrees up there.)<\/p>\n<p>The above was shot with the aforementioned umbrella high and to camera left. There are three SB 910 units, fitted on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/LSLA2457JM.html?hotlink=t&amp;svfor=5m&amp;utm_source=rflaid63891\">tri-flash<\/a>, firing into it and it\u2019s oriented in reflective mode, not shoot through. (This approach produces more scatter and widens the coverage a bit.) On the floor on either side of the camera were two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/lstgtfk.html\">tri-flips fittted with silver reflectors.<\/a>\u00a0A single SB-910 unit, fitted onto the extension arm of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/AEA2030DK.html?hotlink=t&amp;svfor=5m&amp;utm_source=rflaid63891\">Avenger c-stand<\/a> with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/BG175F.html?hotlink=t&amp;svfor=5m&amp;utm_source=rflaid63891\">Justin clamp<\/a> bounced down into each to provide a little bit of low wash of light that just filled in the group slightly. Easy. Lighting ratio between the high umbrella and the low fills is most likely about 3-1. Give or take a few photons.<\/p>\n<p>Covers the group nicely! But how does it drape itself on a single person? In beautiful fashion, to be sure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.joemcnally.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/JM50632.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17511\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17511\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.joemcnally.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/JM50632.jpg\" alt=\"_JM50632\" width=\"1335\" height=\"2000\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lovely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Fallonriversmua\/?fref=ts\">Fallon Rivers<\/a>, above, is Johnny Cash\u2019s great niece. She is perched on a fence at the country home in Bon Aqua, Tennessee, where Johnny would often retreat to write and recharge. Off to camera right, a good 10-12\u2032 feet from her is the good old 4 in 1, this timed used in shoot through fashion, again with 3 Speedlights firing into it. High speed sync deployed here, as I am shooting my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/nk2002u.html\">200mm f2<\/a> right at f2. (Shutter translated to 1\/4000th at that f-stop.) Highlights on her hair courtesy of the fading sun.<\/p>\n<p>And then, there is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joannecash.com\/\">Miss Joanne Cash<\/a>, Johnny\u2019s sister, gospel singer with many albums to her credit, and bona fide country music royalty. Light is to camera left, with a bit of tri-grip reflector below it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.joemcnally.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/JM50665.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17512\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17512\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.joemcnally.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/JM50665.jpg\" alt=\"_JM50665\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1335\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the distance the light is from Fallon, it retains a nice glow, but at the short distance (maybe 3\u2032) it is to Miss Joanne, the light from the Speedlights positively wraps her up like a soft blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Same light source, expressed three different ways.
