Technology has made it much easier to get results of each shot you take &#8211; instantly &#8211; on the LCD screen on the back of your camera, however, can you really rely on such a small screen to review every detail of the image? Yes, you can zoom in and scroll around, however, that takes time &#8211; and time is money. Luckily, there is an easy solution! Some of those benefits include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Reviewing Images on a Larger Screen.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The ability to immediately see the output of what you are shooting on a much larger screen than your LCD monitor. Matthew Chamberlain<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Sharing with Your Creative Team.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Having your images shown on a much larger display helps to make direction to your creative team a bit easier. I\u2019ve found that my hair\/makeup person, Gil, actually sees a stray hair or a hint of too much shine on my subject\u2019s skin before I do as he\u2019s the first to see my images on my iMac while I am shooting. He is immediately on the set to fix the issue before I can even walk over to my screen for review. I also like that my team, and my client, get a bit more motivated when they see results of the shoot right away compared to waiting for the results after the shoot.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22829\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/04-Sharing-Creative-Team.jpg\" alt=\"04-Sharing-Creative-Team\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/04-Sharing-Creative-Team.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/04-Sharing-Creative-Team-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tethered shooting makes it easier to share thoughts and suggestions w\/my creative team and clients.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Immediate Rating of\/Adjustments for Images as You Go.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can review and instantly rate the images as you go, which helps save time in doing so after the shoot. I use the star rating system, but colors and flags can also be used.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Immediate Backup of Images.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you have WiFi access or even a backup drive, you can set yourself up to immediately back up your images while you are shooting, which is safer than relying on your memory card to not fail you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-Immediate-Backup.jpg\" alt=\"06-Immediate-Backup\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-Immediate-Backup.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/06-Immediate-Backup-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I use my <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/vdl9000601.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LaCie 4TB Rugged RAID External Hard Drive<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for image backup.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Instant Adjustments as Needed. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can save time (and sometimes money) on retouching later as you can make any necessary adjustments in camera and with your lighting as you shoot because you see what your final image looks like in full resolution. It\u2019s usually more difficult and takes more time to review and fine tune from your results using an LCD screen as your review method.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/07-Instant-Adjustments.jpg\" alt=\"07-Instant-Adjustments\" width=\"1000\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/07-Instant-Adjustments.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/07-Instant-Adjustments-300x148.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various photo editing\/tethering software such as PK Tether, Camera RC, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Control My Nikon, Aperture, Capture One and Lightroom.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Increased Quantity of Quality Captures. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since you are able to review each frame as you shoot, you are able to fix any issues or make adjustments along the way which leads to capturing more quality images, instead of shooting many unusable shots and salvaging only a fraction of your captures. Focus more on quality vs. quantity as you are not guaranteed the shot with quantity!!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some may argue that tethering can be inconvenient due to the additional equipment it involves, such as a computer or laptop, additional cables and something to stabilize your monitor. Good bags and cases go a long way in helping you transport this type of equipment to a set, some of which I recommend in my article: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/bags-cases-pouches-picking-a-means-for-carrying-and-storing-your-gear\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bags, Cases &amp; Pouches: Picking a Means for Carrying and Storing Your Gear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others may find excuses such as that tethered shooting allows for everyone in the room to see what you are shooting without the benefit of post-production. When you have a client on set and you tether to a program such as Lightroom, it is very simple to stop every once in a while and make a few adjustments to an image in Lightroom (hey, you\u2019re may be tethering using Lightroom anyway!) to communicate your result you are going for during a shoot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes down to it, tethered shooting has very few drawbacks compared to the numerous benefits it has for photographers of any level. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWho\u201d Tethering Would Benefit the Most<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tethering can be a great tool to use &#8211; if you are new to shooting in a studio or on location &#8211; as you can fix issues that may arise upfront and make necessary camera, lighting or composition adjustments as needed. Tethering is also a useful tool for advanced photographers to better direct their creative team and to allow clients the ability to view the results of each shot as you shoot so that they can say \u201cStop! That\u2019s the one!\u201d In general, tethered shooting is perfect for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shooting portraits, fashion or any other people photography in studio;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shooting product, still life or food photography in studio; and\/or<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shooting anything on location where you can bring a laptop and\/or where more serious situations might include a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Computers\/Notebooks-and-Accessories\/Notebooks?term=laptop\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laptop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Computers\/Monitors-and-Projectors\/Computer-Monitors?sf=rating&amp;st=de&amp;term=monitor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Video-Equipment\/Monitors-and-Viewfinders\/Monitor-Hoods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monitor hood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This doesn\u2019t just apply to people and products, but it can also apply to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">landscape<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shoots too.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Required Gear for Tethering<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-22834\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/09-Gear-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"09-Gear\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/09-Gear-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/09-Gear.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All you need is a display device, a camera, a tether cable and tethering software.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you can go crazy and set up your own tethering station with all the choices that there are out there from tables to pads to cups holders, all you need to start shooting tethered are the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a camera;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a laptop or computer; <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tethering software; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a tethering cable<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s that simple. I\u2019ll go into more on required gear and additional options later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cHow\u201d to Tether<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting a tethered session is very simple in a matter of only a few steps. To keep things a bit more simple to explain, I am using one of more popular tools to tethering and photo editing &#8211; Lightroom CC &#8211; as one example of how to get started with tethering. If you use another program, check out the manufacturer\u2019s guide or website for details how to tether.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Connect your camera to your laptop or computer using tethering cable by plugging in the smaller pin-plug to the respective port on your camera. I use Lightroom CC on both my iMac when I\u2019m shooting in studio and on my Dell laptop when I\u2019m on location &#8211; or when I\u2019m using multiple areas of my home studio space to shoot.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-22837\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/12-Software-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"12-Software\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/12-Software-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/12-Software-120x90.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/12-Software.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I use a current version of <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ab65237578.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightroom<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for my tethering and initial photo editing.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Begin a tethering session in your software program (if using Lightroom) by following these steps:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Begin a Tether Session. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to File\/Tether Capture\/Start Tether Capture. A dialog box will pop up requiring selections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-22838\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/13-Start-Capture-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"13-Start-Capture\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/13-Start-Capture-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/13-Start-Capture.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start tether capture to begin your tether session.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Session Name.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Enter a Session Name. I generally title my sessions using the following naming convention: Year-Month-Day-SubjectName.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-22839\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/14-Session-Name-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"14-Session-Name\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/14-Session-Name-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/14-Session-Name.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name your session.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Image Naming Template.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Select how you would like your images to be named as they are shot. Generally, I selected \u201cSession Name &#8211; Sequence\u201d. For me, selecting Session Name helps me to remember which folder individual images belong to if they are ever separated from the original saved location and the \u201csequence\u201d choice makes it easier for me to refer to images by respective numbers. My reason for this is that I have found I have had a problem with keeping images listed in order when starting with single or double digits (ie. Wayand Photography\u201d; and then include the name of all parties involved in the production: my hair\/makeup person, photo assistant, model or subject, client, etc.; and then any keywords describing my shoot such as: fashion, urban street photography, shoes, Betsey Johnson, etc. and maybe specific equipment I am using, such as: Profoto or Alienbee strobes, Nikon SB-700 Flash, Nikon D750, etc. Adding keywords at this stage makes it easier to find your images using the search tool in your software later.
