Titled <em>La Nuit Am\u00e9ricaine<\/em> in its native tongue, <em>Day For Night<\/em> centers on the making of a film-within-the-film and the challenges, heartbreaks, and curve balls life throws you while trying to finish the show.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Truffaut himself plays the film\u2019s director Ferrand as he attempts to navigate the fragile egos and basic needs of his cast and crew. <em>Day For Night<\/em> is without a doubt the inspiration for at least a few of the movies mentioned on this list. Ironically, it also ended the friendship between Truffaut and Jean-Luc Goddard. Goddard claimed <em>Day For Night<\/em> was nothing but lies. And this was coming from a director who made another great French film on filmmaking. But more on that later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Living in Oblivion (1995)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"lyte-wrapper\" style=\"width:1280px;max-width:100%;margin:5px;\"><div class=\"lyMe hidef\" id=\"WYL_EQgqgY5MHac\"><div id=\"lyte_EQgqgY5MHac\" data-src=\"\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/EQgqgY5MHac\/hqdefault.jpg\" class=\"pL\"><div class=\"tC\"><div class=\"tT\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"play\"><\/div><div class=\"ctrl\"><div class=\"Lctrl\"><\/div><div class=\"Rctrl\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><noscript><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/EQgqgY5MHac\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/EQgqgY5MHac\/0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube video thumbnail\" width=\"1280\" height=\"700\" \/><br \/>Watch this video on YouTube<\/a><\/noscript><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:1280px;margin:5px;\"><\/div><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Owing as much to the aforementioned Truffaut title as it does the 1990s indie movement it seeks to mock, Tom DiCillo\u2019s <em>Living in Oblivion<\/em> is the comedic antidote for those who thought <em>Day For Night<\/em> took its subject too seriously. Presented in three acts, <em>Oblivion<\/em> depicts the frustrating process of making a low budget film. While <em>Day For Night\u2019s<\/em> Ferrand had unstable personalities and a left field tragedy to deal with, <em>Oblivion\u2019s<\/em> Nick Reeve (Steve Buscemi) has to contend with disgruntled and underpaid craft service employees, the hubristic lead actor who threatens to take over his shoot and, most amusingly, a cranky actor (hilariously played by <em>Game of Throne&#8217;s<\/em> Peter Dinklage in his debut role).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Upon its release, <em>Oblivion<\/em> gained some notoriety as critics suspected James LeGros\u2019 egomaniacal character was a veiled dig at actor Brad Pitt (the director had worked with him on 1991\u2019s <em>Johnny Suede<\/em>). And then things get really weird.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Director Peter Strickland messes with the viewer\u2019s head while paying homage to the Italian Giallo thrillers of the 1970s. In fact, <em>Berberian Sound Studio<\/em> could be viewed as the audio-horror version of <em>The Stunt Man<\/em>, another film that straddles the fine line between artifice and reality. Toby Jones is the timid Gilderoy, a lost soul who has a gift for creating unsettling sound effects.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Although he appears to be revered by the film\u2019s pretentious director, he feels disrespected by everyone else. Titled <em>La Nuit Am\u00e9ricaine<\/em> in its native tongue, <em>Day For Night<\/em> centers on the making of a film-within-the-film and the challenges, heartbreaks, and curve balls life throws you while trying to finish the show.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Truffaut himself plays the film\u2019s director Ferrand as he attempts to navigate the fragile egos and basic needs of his cast and crew. <em>Day For Night<\/em> is without a doubt the inspiration for at least a few of the movies mentioned on this list. Ironically, it also ended the friendship between Truffaut and Jean-Luc Goddard. Goddard claimed <em>Day For Night<\/em> was nothing but lies. And this was coming from a director who made another great French film on filmmaking. Presented in three acts, <em>Oblivion<\/em> depicts the frustrating process of making a low budget film. While <em>Day For Night\u2019s<\/em> Ferrand had unstable personalities and a left field tragedy to deal with, <em>Oblivion\u2019s<\/em> Nick Reeve (Steve Buscemi) has to contend with disgruntled and underpaid craft service employees, the hubristic lead actor who threatens to take over his shoot and, most amusingly, a cranky actor (hilariously played by <em>Game of Throne&#8217;s<\/em> Peter Dinklage in his debut role).<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Upon its release, <em>Oblivion<\/em> gained some notoriety as critics suspected James LeGros\u2019 egomaniacal character was a veiled dig at actor Brad Pitt (the director had worked with him on 1991\u2019s <em>Johnny Suede<\/em>). Featuring an international cast made up of Michel Piccoli, Brigitte Bardot, Jack Palance, and iconic German director Fritz Lang (playing himself), <em>Contempt<\/em> is as much about the psychology of its characters as it is about the business of filmmaking.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Godard draws parallels to his own life; Jack Palance\u2019s character is supposedly based on American distributor Joseph E. Levine, the very man who produced <em>Contempt<\/em> and wanted Bardot cast instead of Godard\u2019s wife and muse Anna Karina (at one point Bardot wears a Karina-like wig). As it turns out, he has been tasked to oversee the Foley work on a Euro horror movie titled <em>The Equestrian Vortex<\/em>. And then things get really weird.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Director Peter Strickland messes with the viewer\u2019s head while paying homage to the Italian Giallo thrillers of the 1970s. In fact, <em>Berberian Sound Studio<\/em> could be viewed as the audio-horror version of <em>The Stunt Man<\/em>, another film that straddles the fine line between artifice and reality. Toby Jones is the timid Gilderoy, a lost soul who has a gift for creating unsettling sound effects.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Although he appears to be revered by the film\u2019s pretentious director, he feels disrespected by everyone else. Or is it all just in his mind? <em>Berberian Sound Studio<\/em> is an interesting peek into the audio post-production process by way of David Lynch. Not as the characters they created for the first film but literally as themselves. Heather Langenkamp plays \u201cHeather Langenkamp,\u201d the star of the first <em>Nightmare on Elm Street<\/em>. Wes Craven plays \u201cWes Craven,\u201d director of the first <em>Nightmare on Elm Street<\/em>. And now for some reason, the main villain of the popular \u201cElm Street\u201d franchise is haunting the cast and crew of that first film. Heck, Robert Englund plays both himself and his famous creation Freddie Kruger.
