In some areas \u2013 like this, the sea was a floating mass of ice chunks. Whereas in others it was large endless sheets that the vessel would break and slowly move through, sometimes having to back up and find another route if the ice was impassable. Nikon D800E, Nikkor 14-24mm Lens, 1\/2000 second at f5.6, ISO800.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was in Norway leading a photographic group for Journeys Unforgettable, a tour company based in the US that runs photography trips all around the world.\u00a0 Together with expedition leader Rinie Van Meurs, we would be taking our group of guests north towards the North Pole aboard the M\/S Stockholm \u2013 our floating home for the next ten nights.<\/p>\n<p>Built in 1953 for the Swedish National Maritime Administration, the Stockholm has since been refitted and now has a productive career as a very comfortable polar passenger ship.\u00a0 With room for only 12 guests on board, it was an intimate and friendly group.\u00a0 Our journey started in Longyearbyen, the largest settlement on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard Archipelago.\u00a0 At 78 degrees N. latitude, Svalbard is a Norwegian territory that lies halfway between continental Norway and the North Pole. Polar bears are much less successful hunting on land or in the open sea. Nikon D800E, Nikkor 500mm Lens, 1\/8000 second at f5, ISO250.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first day and a half saw us sailing the coast of Spitsbergen past incredible glacial scenery and low hanging fog before finally waving goodbye to shore and heading out to sea.\u00a0 We would be following the edge of the pack ice northwards, and none of us knew quite what to expect.\u00a0 But the skies were clear, the seas were calm and the mood was one of keen expectation\u2026\u00a0 The one thing we were all sure of was that this was going to be a \u201conce in a lifetime\u201d expedition for everyone on board.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking your way through immense sheets of solid, frozen ice is an experience like no other.\u00a0 The ship cruises at a constant speed as it slowly rides up onto the ice before coming down to break through and continue forward.\u00a0 The crack and grate of the ice on the hull of the boat echoes and vibrates in a way that contrasts with what you would normally hope to hear while afloat!\u00a0 However while the noise and the movement are somewhat disturbing on the first day, we all very quickly got used to it and the sound became a familiar companion during the trip, in fact, the silence was almost eerie whenever the creaking ice was absent.\u00a0 Watching the ice slide past was entirely mesmerising and it was easy to stand at the ship\u2019s rails transfixed as we slowly covered the miles north.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24132\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24132\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24132 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_0012.jpg\" alt=\"beautiful arctic scenery in the arctic, Spitsbergen\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_0012.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_0012-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_0012-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our route took us around the coast of Spitsbergen before following the edge of the pack ice north and out to sea. Massive glaciers and jagged rock was a feature of the coastline, with the waters surprisingly still and calm around us. These walls were enormously high and often with waterfalls of melting ice cascading down the sides. Nikon D800E, Nikkor 14-24mm Lens, 1\/320 second at f22, ISO200.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Expedition leader Rinie,\u00a0however kept his eyes fixed firmly on the horizon, using binoculars to search for and spot distant polar bears.\u00a0 His ability to spot them from far away was simply incredible.\u00a0 Often he would point them out to us and we still couldn\u2019t see them until we were much closer.\u00a0 His record for spotting a bear at a distance was 6.8 nautical miles (nearly 13 km) which we worked out using GPS tags when we eventually reached the bear.\u00a0 On spotting any wildlife or features of interest, we would approach slowly either in the M\/S Stockholm itself or by the inflatable rib tender boat, often going \u201cashore\u201d (or onto the pack ice) when conditions were suitable.\u00a0 Gulls would hover and chase the tender boat, diving in whenever we broke through the ice to catch the arctic cod that live beneath the frozen surface.<\/p>\n<p>The main focus of our trip &#8211; polar bears, were only ever viewed from on board the M\/S Stockholm, where we would move in slowly from upwind if possible.\u00a0 If the bears could smell us they would approach the ship themselves to investigate \u2013 we don\u2019t follow the bears and we move on when they do, leaving them to the constant and daily necessity of wandering the edge of the pack ice hunting for their next meal.\u00a0 Although bear attacks are rare, safety precautions are stringent and Rinie carried flares and a gun anytime we left the expedition vessel.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24135\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24135\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24135 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_0022.jpg\" alt=\"polar bear on the arctic ice, Spitsbergen\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_0022.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_0022-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_0022-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24135\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The elusive polar bear. Classified as \u201cvulnerable\u201d polar bear numbers are declining due to a loss of habitat as the sea ice melts earlier each year, driving the bears to land before they have fed and built up enough reserves to last the summer season. Nikon D800Es, Nikkor 300mm Lens, 1\/1250 second at f4.5, ISO400.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In total we saw and photographed 23 individual bears, most out on the edge of the pack ice though we also saw mother and cubs closer in on land.\u00a0 Polar bears, unlike their brown bear cousins, are active year-round though they will often fast through the summer months when restricted to land by the melting ice shelf.\u00a0 An adult male bear can weigh up to 700kgs and measure up to 3 metres in length making them the largest living species of land predator, slightly larger than the Grizzly bears I have previously photographed in Alaska.\u00a0 Observing and photographing them from our water based home in such an incredible and mesmerising environment was definitely one of the highlights of my photography career to date, a sentiment readily shared by my guests on board the cruise.\u00a0 And if sharing images of these amazing creatures help protect their environment for the future then it\u2019s a job well done.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24142\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24142 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_Walrus.jpg\" alt=\"McLennan_Spitsbergen_Walrus\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_Walrus.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_Walrus-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/McLennan_Spitsbergen_Walrus-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Although we were here to see polar bears, there was plenty of other arctic wildlife to be found, from various seabird species to seals and of course the enormous walrus. Males can way a whopping 1,700kg\u2019s when fully grown (two and a half times the size of an adult male polar bear).
