Canon today issued a recall of its EOS-1D and 1Ds Mark III flagship DSLR cameras to remove a ring-shaped drop that was caused by oil lubricant that leaked out of some models’ mirror box. The lubricant is used to keep the camera’s moving parts working, but droplets of excess oil may have landed on the surface of the low pass filter, which is located in front of the cameras’ CMOS sensor, affecting image quality.<\/p>\n
In a letter to its customers, Canon has offered to repair the affected models free of charge. Customers have been advised to inspect their cameras’ mirror boxes for whites sponts, which may be signs of excess lubricant oil.<\/p>\n

\nImages taken may exhibit large ring-shaped spots.<\/p>\n
Cause
\nThese ring-shaped spots are the images of oil lubricant on the surface of the low pass filter (LPF), which is located in front of the CMOS sensor.<\/p>\n
This oil is used inside the Mirror Box to lubricate some of the camera’s moving parts. If the oil is applied too liberally when the camera is manufactured, it can become scattered onto the surface of the LPF through normal camera operation.<\/p>\n

To prevent oil from scattering, which may seriously affect images, our Customer Support Center will arrange free cleaning of the mirror box to affected customers to remove the excess oil.<\/p>\n
Oil Lubricant Used in Cameras
\nMeasures are being implemented to control the amount of lubricant applied during manufacture in order to reduce the occurrence of oil spots. However, because this lubricant is required to ensure proper operation of the camera\u2019s precision mechanical parts, it is impossible to eliminate all instances of oil scattering.
