The tools of the trade include everything from microphones, speakers, mixing boards, hydrophones, and musical instruments to a large bundle of audio gear which can add effects to our desired sounds captured or streamed.

So could anything recorded be considered sound art? Perhaps, but for our purposes, let’s define a “sound artist’ as a creative person that is doing something interesting to the ear and not limited to exclusively the visual sense; a form of art incorporating sound.

As sound artist and ecologist Bernie Krause states in one of his talks “while a picture might be worth a thousand words, a soundscape is worth a thousand pictures.”

Here’s a list of 10 artists, in no particular order, to look out for:

1. His most well-known piece is “Times Square,” where the listener experiences harmonic sound textures rising from the grates below at this famed triangular location. With thanks to Marcus Gammel., and performed live at Elektroakustischer Salon for Art's Birthday, Berghain 17th January 2014, is now available as a download only release. "Out of Range" is an audio work based on ultrasound and echolocation used by bats, dolphins and other creatures whio operate beyond the range of human hearing - 'seeing' with sound, or perhaps 'hearing' objects. All sound is invisible; ultrasound is inaudible. Of course, many species have a greater range of hearing than us humans and also more specific and specialised with complex combinations of the different senses...; Creatures on both land and under water produce and/or perceive very high sound frequencies. Some species of insects, birds, fish, and mammals can emit and hear ultrasound, used for communications, hunting and orientation. These creatures operate on a different level of perception to us, in an inaudible range above 20kHz... Many animals is also using acoustic properties of a space; a bat for example can use the echo from a tower block wall to amplify their calls for mates in the autumn; a toadfish uses the shape of a cave to amplify their calls to protect their habitat. Whales use the different acoustic properties at different depths in the ocean at different pressure levels to send their long distance calls. An astonishing fact about moths is that they have a reflex action with their wings to shut down when they hear the bat echolocation calls...; That we reckon that this is so astonishing says something about us...;. The mix for the piece is based on ultrasound, hydrophone recordings below the water and also of echolocation sound within audible range. The recordings were made in various locations in Central Park and East River in New York, USA, a forest outside Kaliningrad in Russia, Regents Park in London, UK, and various locations in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The ultrasound is time-stretched to bring it into a frequency range audible for human beings. Recordings were made on a Pettersson Ultrasound Detector D1000X, Reson 4032 and DPA 8011 hydrophones and 4060 dpa microphones onto a Sound Devices 477T hard disk recorder.">

“Out of Range” is an audio work based on ultrasound and echolocation used by bats, dolphins, and other creatures who operate beyond the range of human hearing. One of the most highly anticipated films of the year, from the directors of Sweetgrass and Foreign Parts, Leviathan is a thrilling, immersive documentary that takes you deep inside the dangerous world of commercial fishing. Set aboard a hulking fishing vessel as it navigates the treacherous waves off the New England coast-the very waters that once inspired Moby Dick- the film captures the harsh, unforgiving world of the fishermen in starkly haunting, yet beautiful detail. Employing an arsenal of cameras that pass freely from film crew to ship crew, and swoop from below sea level to astonishing bird's-eye views, Leviathan is unlike anything you have ever seen; a purely visceral, cinematic experience. https://twitter.com/LeviathanMovie https://www.facebook.com/LeviathanMovie">

My favorite example of sound art in film is the documentary “Leviathan” created by artists and anthropologists from the Sensory Ethnography Lab at Harvard. Ride the rhythm of the rails on board the Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mxico (FNM) and the music of a journey that has now passed into history." El Tren Fantasma, (The Ghost Train), is Chris Watson's 4th solo album for Touch, and his first since Weather Report in 2003, which was named as one of the albums you should hear before you die in The Guardian. A Radio programme was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Saturday 30 Oct, 2010, produced by Sarah Blunt, and described as "a thrilling acoustic journey across the heart of Mexico from Pacific to Atlantic coast using archive recordings to recreate a rail passenger service which no longer exists. It's now more than a decade since FNM operated its last continuous passenger service across country. Chris Watson spent a month on board the train with some of the last passengers to travel this route. As sound recordist he was part of the film crew working on a programme in the BBC TV series Great Railways Journeys. Now, in this album, the journey of the 'ghost train' is recreated, evoking memories of a recent past, capturing the atmosphere, rhythms and sounds of human life, wildlife and the journey itself along the tracks of one of Mexico's greatest engineering projects. About the author... Chris Watson is one of the world's leading recorders of wildlife and natural phenomena, and for Touch he edits his field recordings into a filmic narrative. For example. the unearthly groaning of ice in an Icelandic glacier is a classic example of, in Watson's words, putting a microphone where you can't put your ears. He was born in Sheffield where he attended Rowlinson School and Stannington College (now part of Sheffield College). In 1971 he was a founding member of the influential Sheffield-based experimental music group Cabaret Voltaire. His sound recording career began in 1981 when he joined Tyne Tees Television. Since then he has developed a particular and passionate interest in recording the wildlife sounds of animals, habitats and atmospheres from around the world. As a freelance recordist for film, tv & radio, Chris Watson specialises in natural history and documentary location sound together with track assembly and sound design in post production. Reviews for This Release: "A benchmark in field recording not to mention a map of the soul, an insight into the human condition and a key to dreams." - Andrew Weatherall "It is over a decade since FNM operated its last continuous passenger service across the country but here sound recordist Chris Watson recreates its atmospheric journey with the help of the train recordings he made while working on the BBC television series Great Railway Journeys... through desert and city, but it is the rocking rhythms of the train itself that prove most memorable. [Stephanie Billen]" - The Observer "El Tren Fantasma (8pm) is Archive on 4's recollection of a trans-Mexico rail journey by sound recordist Chris Watson. From desert to rainforest, hummingbirds' wings to the boom of heat rising from the Copper Canyon, it recalls a beloved passenger train system abandoned by privatisation. **** [Martin Hoyle]" - The Financial Times "Sometimes, radio can awaken the mind and sharpen the senses like no other medium. This "sound portrait" of a now-abandoned railway line that used to run between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Mexico is a good case in point.
