But with the changing media landscape, it\u2019s no surprise these roles have shifted. Today\u2019s journalist is expected to be a writer, a photographer, and a videographer, all in one. Editors are often willing to pay writers extra \u2014 sometimes double or more \u2014 for high-quality images, so learning photography is definitely lucrative. In this article we will discuss how to make images travel editors will pay for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it may have seemed daunting initially, there\u2019s no better (or easier) time to be a photographer. Today\u2019s cameras and high-tech lenses make shooting on the scene doable for even new-to-photography journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, I\u2019ll highlight some of the tips I\u2019ve learned from pitching photographs with my travel stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Invest in the Right Camera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I invested in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Cameras\/Sony~Mirrorless-Cameras\">Sony Alpha series<\/a> early, and these cameras continue reaping rewards. Sony Alpha cameras take incredible video (a main focus for my business), but they also capture wonderful still images, particularly portraits with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/iso5518.html?gclid=CjwKCAiA_ZTfBRBjEiwAN6YG4ZDndL4ZVkxlzKPZX4Nes3RCePJqMDOipPWgG4yZiIGopk-QFppZVxoCWrUQAvD_BwE\">55mm Zeiss lens<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re just dabbling into the world of photography, you may be better off with an easier-to-learn camera such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/isorx100m7.html\">Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII<\/a>. This compact, lightweight camera is great for travel journalists; it packs up easily, but also delivers top-notch and high-resolution results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Know What Travel Editors are Looking for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you take off for your trip or assignment, look through the publication to understand what their images look like so you can replicate. Are they bright and airy? Do they get full-body shots of their subjects, or just portraits from the shoulders up? Also, do they crop a certain way for feature images (e.g., super wide)? If it\u2019s helpful, write out a quick cheat sheet for yourself to remember these must-dos so your photography and editing is spot-on and aligns seamlessly with your goal publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-54591\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/AdobeStock_192619124-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Here is an example of an image that travel editors will pay for\" class=\"wp-image-104093\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/AdobeStock_192619124-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/AdobeStock_192619124-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/AdobeStock_192619124.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Capture a Variety of Photographs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t have the \u201cone and done\u201d mentality. When it comes to photographing for travel publications, variety is essential. Capture food from a few different angles, and make sure to get more than just food, but the restaurant exterior and interior. If you\u2019re gathering great details from a bartender, ask to take their photograph (and get their name and correct spelling). With variety in mind, you\u2019ll also want to get multiple angles of said bartender: some candids pouring beer, a few portrait shots, etc. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understand Depth of Field<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to go crazy learning every single thing about your camera in the beginning, but there is one absolute must-know for travel photographers: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/the-art-of-portraiture-part-1-composition-depth-of-field-background\/\">depth of field<\/a>. I\u2019m talking blurry backgrounds with your subject in focus (which I realize is much easier to achieve now with the iPhone\u2019s portrait mode).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To capture this type of shot \u2014 a must for food and beverage photography, wildlife, portraits, and just about anything with a subject \u2014 turn your \u201cf stop\u201d to the lower numbers (e.g., f\/2.8 or f\/4.5 instead of f\/22). This opens the aperture which lets more light in, so you\u2019ll need to balance it out by lowering your ISO or increasing your shutter speed (the faster the shutter speed, the less light your camera lets in). The final effect is a sharp, in-focus subject with a soft blurred background. There are dozens of software options to choose from. On mobile, you can use apps such as <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/snapseed\/id439438619?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snapseed<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/a-color-story\/id1015059175?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Color Story<\/a>. On desktop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ab65321163.html\">Adobe Lightroom<\/a> is a favorite among professional photographers, but you can also use inexpensive or free software such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.picmonkey.com\/photo-editor?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=G_Search_Brand_Proper_Not-Free_USA_EM&amp;utm_content=PicMonkey_EM&amp;utm_term=picmonkey_e_c_&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA_ZTfBRBjEiwAN6YG4ftT4S4tY-AX1j-_YkZwedDyIUOj-cbeMMkV8q2L7QeAX2ndVOm81RoCD-UQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PicMonkey<\/a> to make slight adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dabble in Video<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While initially you\u2019ll want to focus on one new skillset \u2014 photography \u2014 you should also give <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/5-mistakes-you-could-be-making-as-a-travel-videographer\/\">video a try<\/a>.
