Let\u2019s take a look. I recently took a trip to the dollar store and it was packed with fun, kitschy stickers, table decor, and more. After a &#36;9 collection of goodies, I had just what I needed for a Valentine\u2019s day beauty look. My fabulous team adorned my subject in the stickers plus some beautifully complimentary hair and makeup. The resulting look was extremely playful and kitschy, so that\u2019s what I wanted out of the lighting and creative effects. For this shot I used three lights to give rich color to the shot: #1 Main light: Profoto D2 + 5 degree grid #2 Gel light left: Profoto D2 + purple gel #3 Gel light right: Profoto D2 + magenta gel Because my subject had some sequins and reflective elements on her face, I decided to use a 4 point cross star filter so that when the hard light hit her face it would create starburst reflections. I used the Canon R5 and RF 24-105 for these images. Once I had the lighting, the color, and special effects, it was all about getting the right expressions. I decided to go for a mixture of innocent and playful to bring the look to life! You never know when a tree topper can become a headpiece, a table cloth becomes a headwrap, or window decoration becomes a stylish prop!<\/p>\n<p>In mid-January I took a trip to the dollar store and it was packed with fun, kitschy stickers, table decor, and more\u2014all with a Valentine\u2019s theme! For Valentine\u2019s Day there are dozens of fun little items that can be utilized in a conceptual shoot! Image by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I sent pictures of the stickers and sequins to my hair stylist and makeup artist for inspiration, and on the day of the shoot they were excited to create a holiday look. My fabulous team adorned my subject in the stickers plus some beautifully complimentary hair and makeup. The resulting look was extremely playful and kitschy, so then it was up to me to make it really shine with my lighting!<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s walk through that photoshoot setup, which included the <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/qvB7y\">Profoto D2<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/qvB7y\">,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/YYa4r\">Profoto 5-degree grid<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/YYa4r\">,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/e2b6j\">Rosco Creative Gel Kit<\/a> , the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/hy77s4.html?sterm=1Pe2cd25pxyOULX0MdV3iVCmUkEWUrUJr0qRTw0&amp;utm_source=rflaid66569\">Hoya Star Filter<\/a>, and my <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/JxzdE\">Canon EOS R5<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/q74XY\">Canon RF 24-105mm 4.0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/q74XY\">.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I began by placing a <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/YYa4r\">5-degree grid<\/a> on the subject\u2019s face. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/namm-2020-novation-introduces-launchpad-pro-mklll-a-production-grid-controller-for-ableton-live\/\">Grids<\/a> are modifiers (or modifier add-ons) that allow you to create a narrower beam of light. By selecting a very tight grid, I can concentrate the light mostly on the subject\u2019s face, leaving the rest of the shot in shadow. This is exactly what I wanted to achieve.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67311\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67311\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-67311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Main_1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Creative Gels\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Main_1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Main_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Main_1-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Main_1.jpg 1700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67311\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Using a 5-degree grid as the main light concentrates the spread of light primarily to her face. This allows the rest of the frame to fall to shadow, which is perfect for adding gels in lights 2 and 3! Image by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Why did I only want my main light to hit her face? I know from my extensive use of gels that gel color shows up most in the shadow areas of a photograph. White light that spills everywhere tends to wash out the saturated colors from the gels. In this shot, I wanted it to be a mix of pink and purple gels, so restricting the spread of the main light was a very important element of this shot. I began by adding a strobe (no modifier) to the left of the frame with a purple gel. Notice how the purple of the gel now shows up dramatically in the shadow areas of the shot.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67309\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-67309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Creative Gels\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_1-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_1.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By adding a strobe with a purple gel to the left of the frame, the color now begins to fill in the shadows across the subject. Image by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lastly, I added a third strobe to the right of the frame with the magenta gel. You can see how this strobe eliminated the remaining shadows on the face and helped to create a beautiful pink wash over the entire scene. This was exactly the color palette I was looking for in my Valentine&#8217;s Day shoot!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67310\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-67310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Creative Gels\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Gel_2-50x33.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adding a strobe with a magenta gel to the right of the scene helps to fill in the rest of the shadows on the face and also illuminate the background. Notice now how the entire scene has a pleasing purple\/pink analogous color scheme. Image by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking of color, I wanted my entire shot to be an analogous color scheme of pinks and purples. This helped me to decide upon my gel selection as well as my background choice: <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/xVrdy\">Savage Universal Tulp seamless paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I also wanted to explain my choice of bare bulbs for the two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/key-lights-fill-lights-hair-lights-different-lighting-uses-studio-strobes\/\">fill lights<\/a>. Using no modifiers at all achieves two things. First, not using restrictive modifiers allowed the lights to spill across the entire scene, including the background. Yes, I could have added a strobe specifically for the background but in this instance having a bit more spill of light allowed me to limit the setup to only three strobes. More importantly to my concept, however, is that the hard light sources (from no modifier) created specular highlights on the sequins on my subject\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>This hard light was essential to emphasize the creative in-camera effect of adding a star filter! I wanted to emphasize the playful and kitschy vibe by adding a star filter to create starburst effects on specular highlights in the image. As my subject turned and tilted her face, the sequins caught the light and I could see (in camera) the playful effect from the 4-Point Star Filter.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67312\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67312\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-67312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Valentine_diagram-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Creative Gel Setup\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Valentine_diagram-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Valentine_diagram-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Valentine_diagram-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Valentine_diagram-256x256.jpg 256w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Valentine_diagram-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Valentine_diagram.jpg 1980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This three-light setup is a fun approach to introducing colorful light into your shot to reinforce the concept of Valentine&#8217;s Day. Image via Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For this shoot, I utilized my go-to setup for studio photography&#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/car5.html\">Canon EOS R5<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/car241054.html\">Canon RF 24-105mm 4.0<\/a>. This camera-lens combo gives me the flexibility to capture wider shots of her entire torso and then crop in for tighter shots of just her face.<\/p>\n<p>Once I had the lighting, the color, and special effects, it was all about getting the right expressions. I decided to go for a mixture of innocent and playful to bring the look to life. I had the model blow kisses at the camera, wink playfully off-camera, stare down quietly away from the camera, and just a wide range of different expressions.<\/p>\n<p>I originally thought of introducing hands into the shot, but we\u2019d used up all the stickers, and bare hands would have ruined the concept. I focused instead on expression and camera angle.<\/p>\n<p>How much of this shot was done in post-processing, aka how much retouching, was needed? I think I spent about 30 seconds adding a bit of contrast and removing a freckle. When you have great lighting, model, and hair and makeup, you can get it in camera even without soft light!<\/p>\n<p>Hope you love the results as much as I do!
