It\u2019s the moment American travelers have been waiting for: The European Union (EU) is slowly opening its doors to U.S. travelers! That means summers spent frolicking along the Amalfi Coast or gallivanting through Greece are no longer distant memories\u2014they\u2019re summer-getaway possibilities (with certain stipulations<\/a>, of course).<\/p>\n

The entire travel world is celebrating this news, but few are as eager and excited to get back out there as travel photographers<\/a>. That\u2019s why, to celebrate this milestone, we sat down to chat European photo spots with seasoned travel blogger and photographer Amanda Williams<\/a>, the creative behind A Dangerous Business<\/a> travel blog.<\/p>\n

Cue the wanderlust: we have the best European photo spots<\/strong><\/h2>\n

With visits to more than 30 European countries, Williams knows a thing or two about European travel. \u201cYou can hop on a train or short flight and be somewhere completely different in just hours,\u201d Williams says when asked why Europe is an ideal destination for photographers. \u201cThere\u2019s so much variety in a relatively small area. Plus, all the history! If you\u2019re a sucker for architecture like me, you definitely won\u2019t be disappointed in Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams has witnessed and photographed some of the most captivating European photo spots, including catching the northern lights in Norway. Her favorite memory stemmed from a trip to Scotland. \u201cOn the Isle of Lewis and Harris, we visited an ancient stone circle a la \u201cOutlander,\u201d visited a tiny little distillery, hiked to a lighthouse, and met some highland cattle on a beautiful beach. It was just such a good day, both experience-wise and <\/em>photography-wise.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the Isle of Lewis and Harris may have her heart, Williams has many European favorites. She was willing to share with the caveat that she has yet to see all that Europe has to offer. Therefore, whether you\u2019re dreaming of a future European getaway or you\u2019re ready to book that summer trip, here are Williams\u2019 top European photo spots. Faroe Islands for dramatic nature<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cThis little island grouping in the North Atlantic is basically a photographer\u2019s dream,\u201d says Williams, who explored the Faroe Islands via road trip<\/a>. \u201cIt has dramatic landscapes, moody weather, and woolly sheep.\u201d Even better? It\u2019s relatively off the tourist track.<\/p>\n

Scottish Highlands for wild landscapes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If the highland cattle didn\u2019t allure you, Scotland\u2019s rugged landscapes definitely will\u2014especially the further north you go. \u201cScotland is one of my favorite places in the entire world. I always come home from any trip with a very full memory card. The Highlands are rugged and beautiful, and the isles have some incredible beaches,\u201d Williams says.<\/p>\n

Venice, Italy, for the captivating canals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Find history and gorgeous photo spots in this European destination. \u201cVenice has gotten a bit of negative media attention in recent years because of issues of overtourism, but the fact remains that Venice is still such a unique and beautiful place,\u201d Williams says. \u201cIf you want to really get a feel for Italy’s Floating City, you need to stay overnight. Mornings and evenings are quieter and quite magical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Plus, those quieter moments are often during peak golden-hour times\u2014a win-win for photographers. (See Williams\u2019 Venice travel guide here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Budapest, Hungary, for one-of-a-kind architecture<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cAs far as big cities in Europe go, I really love Budapest,\u201d Williams says. \u201cIt has some gorgeous architecture and interesting history, and I always enjoy taking my camera out there.\u201d (See here for some of our best architecture photography tips<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Northern Norway for northern lights and Nordic charm<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After a year cooped up inside, travel photographers are craving awe and wonder\u2014and Norway offers all of that, and then some, starting with aurora-borealis views<\/a>. \u201cIf it’s northern lights, quaint towns, and epic landscapes you’re after, then northern Norway is a great spot to put on your list,\u201d Williams says.<\/p>\n

She notes: Troms\u00f8 and Alta are ideal for catching aurora-borealis shows. Other Norwegian getaways like Senja, the Vester\u00e5len Islands, and the Lofoten Islands, are must-sees if time allows.<\/p>\n

Portugal for everything in one<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With varied landscapes, unique cities, and architectural wonders galore, it\u2019s hard for travel photographers to top Portugal<\/a>. \u201cLisbon and Porto are both so fun to photograph thanks to old neighborhoods and lots of beautiful\u00a0azulejo tiles. Sintra is worth a visit if you want to see some pretty palaces,\u201d Williams says.<\/p>\n

Iceland for wonder and awe<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Iceland was among the first destinations to welcome U.S. travelers after the pandemic, and travel photographers can\u2019t wait to get back to capture the volcanic island\u2019s beauty\u2014starting with its active volcano<\/a>. Williams shares this sentiment: \u201cThe country is just so fascinating, and with its glaciers, volcanoes, hot springs, black beaches, and all-around dramatic landscapes, it\u2019s not difficult to find something photo-worthy here.\u201d (Find photo inspiration in Williams\u2019 Iceland-travel itinerary<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Istanbul, Turkey, for the colors and charisma<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Yes, Williams acknowledges that Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia. However, we\u2019re happy to include it in her must-photograph Europe list because we agree: the city\u2019s beauty is truly unmatched. \u201cI really love the city and think it’s such a fun place to photograph,\u201d Williams says. \u201cWhether it’s the beautiful mosques, spices at the bazaar, or golden sunsets over the Bosphorus [strait], you’ll see things here that you won’t find in the rest of Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, Williams did have some honorable mentions. Like any travel blogger, the \u201cwhat\u2019s your favorite country\u201d question is simply too hard to answer. Other European photography recommendations include Slovenia\u2019s Lake Bled, London, the Greek Island, and Colmar, France, come holiday time.<\/p>\n

Photography gear for European travel<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When it comes to photography gear, Williams suggests making the most of what\u2019s available. \u201cI\u2019m a firm believer that the best camera is the one you have, and the one you don\u2019t mind carrying around with you.\u201d Williams now uses the Sony A7III<\/a> for travel photography, but is not above using a phone if necessary\u2014especially given the latest smartphone-camera technology.
