Although, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">his topic is also one of my favorites to discuss.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In this article, I\u2019ll share with you my top tips for photographing birds in flight (BIF). This is to help you succeed when heading out to capture some feathered friends soaring through the sky.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the pictures in this article were taken on a March afternoon in and around Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach, Florida with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">my<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/car6k1at.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Canon EOS R6<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/car100500.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canon RF100-500mm <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lens. That lens, or zoom lenses in that general focus length range, are well-suited for bird photos because they offer composition flexibility as opposed to a fixed focal length lens that limits composition possibilities. That said, some of my bird photographer friends never leave home without a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/car40028.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canon 400mm 2.8 lens <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/car100500.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canon 500mm f\/4 <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lens \u2013 both of which cost many times more than a zoom lens.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Also, all<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the images in this article are hand-held shots which is the way I usually like to shoot. If you don\u2019t like to hand-hold telephoto lenses \u2014 or want to steady your bird photos \u2014 I recommend mounting a gimbal head. This<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0offers maximum shooting flexibility in all directions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the images in this article were also cropped from my original RAW files. I shoot a bit loose so wing tips and feet are not cut off. Keep in mind that cropping gives you a second chance at composition.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Okay, onto the BIF tips!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72558\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72558\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72558\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1-e1626895239386.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"557\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72558\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Rick Sammon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Get the eyes in focus<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If the eyes are not in focus and well-lit, you have missed the shot \u2014 unless you are going for a silhouette.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Toward that goal, try to photograph a bird with the sun at your back, which will light the bird\u2019s face and eyes. Set your camera on focus tracking, which tracks the subject right up until the time of exposure. Also, try to set the focus point on the bird\u2019s face.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some cameras, like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/us1430643.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwi9-HBhACEiwAPzUhHFLF-HFzo_e_D1Ls5O_ufac5lMClLkbFk9QNFkGesrqf6zsm0H89VxoC1xMQAvD_BwE&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwi9-HBhACEiwAPzUhHFLF-HFzo_e_D1Ls5O_ufac5lMClLkbFk9QNFkGesrqf6zsm0H89VxoC1xMQAvD_BwE&amp;utm_source=adl-gbase-p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canon EOS 5 <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/car6k1at.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Canon EOS R6,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have a feature called Animal Tracking which does an amazing job of tracking fast-moving subjects.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72559\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72559\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72559 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"977\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2-300x286.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72559\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Rick Sammon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Watch the background<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The background can make or break a BIF shot, or any shot for that matter. Usually, I go for a clean background. If there are trees or bushes in the background, I\u2019ll set my lens to the widest aperture to blur it out.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Speaking of the background, it can change an automatic exposure setting. To help ensure a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/mistakes-to-avoid-long-exposure-photography\/\">good exposure<\/a>, it\u2019s best to shoot on manual mode and auto ISO.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One more very important point about exposure is to set your exposure based on the brightest part of the scene. For example, this would be the white features on a bird with brown\/black and white features. This will require checking the highlight alert on your camera. Take a test shot, do a quick check, and set or reset your exposure accordingly.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If the highlights are overexposed by more than one stop, it will probably be impossible to recover them in Photoshop or Lightroom.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72560\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72560\" style=\"width: 973px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72560 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"973\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/3.png 973w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/3-285x300.png 285w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 973px) 100vw, 973px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Rick Sammon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Go for gesture<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The position of a bird\u2019s wings, head, legs, face, and even the look in their eyes is how a professional chooses their best shots from a sequence of images. When picking your \u201ckeepers,\u201d choose them based on gesture. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wildlife-photography-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wildlife photographs<\/a> capturing gesture or emotion really get a viewer\u2019s attention.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To capture subtle differences in gesture, set your camera on the highest frame rate. On that note, professional bird photographers use cameras with super-high frame rates \u2014 \u00a0such as the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ica1dxm3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canon 1DX Mark III <\/a>\u2014\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which offers 16 fps with the mechanical shutter and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/a-camera-around-my-neck-finding-possibilities-through-my-viewfinder\/\">optical viewfinder<\/a>. That is, try to get a shot in which each bird is isolated in the frame. However, there are two more ingredients that you\u2019ll need to succeed in your quest: luck and patience. The patience part is obvious. You need to take the time to find a good subject and then wait for that subject to take flight. But never underestimate the importance of luck too.
