On October 7th, Adorama Business Solutions<\/a> hosted an insightful webinar entitled “UAS and Hurricane Ida: Drone Case Study with Cranford Police Department<\/a>.” The webinar discusses how unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) can assist police departments and other public service offices to mitigate damage caused by natural disasters. A group of three presenters share their personal experience using UAS, or drones, to assess the damage causes by disasters such as floods, storms, and fires.<\/p>\n

The webinar focuses on a case study of the Cranford Police Department in New Jersey, which used various UAS in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. In September of 2021, Hurricane Ida caused high winds and massive rainfall across the Northwest \u2014 Cranford was among many towns to experience flooding. Two of the presenters are a part of the Cranford police team responsible during Ida. Throughout the webinar, they discuss the many ways they utilized UAS to swiftly respond to damage and act quickly to alleviate the effects.<\/p>\n

Chad Collier,<\/strong>\u00a0who currently serves as the Chief UAS Pilot at Adorama after 10+ years working in law enforcement and UAS commercial operations.<\/p>\n

Captain Guy Patterson,\u00a0<\/strong>who has 23 years of service with the Cranford Police Department and currently oversees the Patrol and Investigative Divisions.<\/p>\n

Captain Edward Davenport,\u00a0<\/strong>who has worked with the Cranford Police Department for 25 years and currently leads the Traffic, Records, and Training & Community Outreach Divisions.<\/p>\n

The webinar, which was is now available to view on demand, covers a variety of tactics using UAS for public service offices to consider. This includes a Flood Inundation and Receding Assessment, which you can conduct during and\/or after a flood. Public service officials can fly over flooding areas to assess and plan what equipment will be needed to alleviate damage.<\/p>\n

The presenters also discuss how UAS can be used by groups to resolve the effects of other nature disasters. For example, drones can capture video footage over land to evaluate the damage caused by debris and fires.<\/p>\n
