That\u2019s a dream for any travel photographer \u2014 and she made this her reality by taking a big leap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2016, I moved from Dallas to Heidelberg, Germany. She went nearly every day of the Christmas market season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just can\u2019t get enough!&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>We sat down with Sula to learn her best tips and tricks for photographing holiday markets. Read on for the must-have holiday-market insights she was excited to share!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Photogenic holiday markets to consider<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Where do you start when it comes to picking a holiday market to photograph? Of course, there\u2019s Sula\u2019s go-to, the <a href=\"https:\/\/heleneinbetween.com\/2019\/11\/ultimate-guide-to-heidelberg-christmas-market.html\">Heidelberg Christmas Market<\/a>, which brings festive flair to this idyllic 17th-century German town. Although, this is hardly the only holiday market to photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s her breakdown of favorite holiday markets by category:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Best overall<\/strong> &#8211; Cologne, Germany<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best from above<\/strong> &#8211; Tallinn, Estonia<\/li>\n<li><strong>Most elegant<\/strong> &#8211; Vienna, Austria<\/li>\n<li><strong>Most over-the-top<\/strong> &#8211; Strasbourg, France<\/li>\n<li><strong>Named best Christmas market for 2021<\/strong> &#8211; Basel, Switzerland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>How to photograph European holiday markets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With falling snow, holiday lights (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/5-tips-for-capturing-bokeh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hello, bokeh!<\/a>), and colors galore, European markets are bursting at the seams with photographic potential. Helena\u2019s advice for capturing the magic? She offers a breakdown of <a href=\"https:\/\/heleneinbetween.com\/2019\/10\/what-to-eat-and-drink-at-a-german-christmas-market.html\">German Christmas markets<\/a> on her blog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo Christmas market is complete without a steaming hot cup of the sweet, spicy mulled wine \u2014 and this also makes for a great photo,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd of course, sausages are a big hit! At the markets, you&#8217;ll find roasted chestnuts, gingerbread, or crepes at French markets. Food is always great to photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The other subject she recommends photographing at holiday markets? Experiencing radiating joy and the infectious holiday spirit is nothing if not magical \u2014 and it\u2019s well worth some quality time away from the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristmas markets in Europe are truly a snow globe scene coming to life,\u201d Sula says. \u201cHand-carved wooden stalls selling the most delicious treats, exquisite ornaments, people singing carols, and each small village, town, and city comes together to make the Christmas season part of the fabric of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her biggest non-photo tip for visit Europe\u2019s Christmas markets is to always bring cash.
