I took this photograph, which I call, \u201cLove Bite\u201d in Botswana. My camera and settings: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/US%20%20%20%20687659.html?KBID=66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 1D Mark II<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/CA1004002U.html?utm_term=Other&amp;utm_medium=Affiliate&amp;utm_campaign=Other&amp;utm_source=rflaid66949&amp;cvosrc=affiliate.66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 100-400mm<\/a> lens, ISO 200, f\/7.1 @ 1\/400<\/span><sup><span face=\"Calibri, serif\">th<\/span><\/sup><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"> second.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span face=\"Calibri, serif\" style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">What\u2019s the best lens for capturing action? The answer is simple: \u201cIt depends.\u201d Here are three main factors to take into consideration before making a lens selection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"><b>1) Subject distance<\/b><\/span><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"> \u2013 as the camera-to-subject distance increases, you need a longer lens. Some professional wildlife photographers use the fastest super-telephoto, fixed-focal-length lenses possible, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/CA50042U.html?KBID=66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 500mm<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/CA60042U.html?KBID=66949\" target=\"_blank\">600mm<\/a> lenses. Others, like me, like to use zoom lenses, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/CA2004004.html?KBID=66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 200-400mm IS<\/a> zoom with a built-in 2x converter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"><strong>2) <\/strong><\/span><strong><span face=\"Calibri, serif\">Light level<\/span><\/strong><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"> \u2013 as the light level decreases, you may need a faster (wider maximum aperture) lens. That said, you can boost the ISO to get a fast shutter speed, but that may mean more noise in your images. Of course, you can reduce noise in Photoshop and Lightroom, or with plug-ins for each program. What\u2019s more, as my Dad used to say, \u201cIf a picture is so boring that you notice the noise, it\u2019s a boring picture.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span face=\"Calibri, serif\" style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Different photographers, of course, choose different lenses. I know pros that like to shoot with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/CA300282U.html?KBID=66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 300mm f\/2.8<\/a> lens, while I like to shoot with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/CA70300LU.html?KBID=66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 70-300mm f\/4- 5.6<\/a> lens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"><strong>3) <\/strong><\/span><strong><span face=\"Calibri, serif\">Your budget<\/span><\/strong><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"> \u2013Fast, fixed-focal-length lenses, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/CA60042U.html?KBID=66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 600mm<\/a>, are pricy. Zoom lenses, like my favorite action zoom lens, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/CA1004002U.html?utm_term=Other&amp;utm_medium=Affiliate&amp;utm_campaign=Other&amp;utm_source=rflaid66949&amp;cvosrc=affiliate.66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 100-400mm IS<\/a>, are usually more affordable (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/CA2004004.html?KBID=66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 200-400mm IS<\/a> zoom with a built-in 2X converter is an exception).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">\u201c<span face=\"Calibri, serif\"><b>What\u2019s the best shutter speed for capturing action?\u201d<\/b><\/span><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"> That\u2019s another question I get asked. And guess what? The answer is the same: \u201cIt depends.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span face=\"Calibri, serif\" style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">It depends on how fast the subject is moving and it depends on the mood or feeling you want to create with your photograph. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><span face=\"Calibri, serif\">As a general rule, to \u201cfreeze\u201d action, I don\u2019t shoot action shots at shutter speeds slower than 1\/500<\/span><sup><span face=\"Calibri, serif\">th<\/span><\/sup><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"> of a second, but it\u2019s often faster. To blur subject movement, I use shutter speeds of 1\/30<\/span><sup><span face=\"Calibri, serif\">th<\/span><\/sup><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"> to a 1\/5<\/span><sup><span face=\"Calibri, serif\">th<\/span><\/sup><span face=\"Calibri, serif\"> of a second. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span face=\"Calibri, serif\" style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">In both cases, the key is to experiment with different shutter speeds to get the desired effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span face=\"Calibri, serif\" style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">So let the action begin! To convey the feeling of action, I panned and used a slow shutter speed. It took me many tries to get the exact effect I wanted. Yes. This guy was not going that fast, but he was speeding. I knew I needed a fast shutter speed to stop the action, so I shot at a fast shutter speed. You need to shoot a lot of images by setting your camera to its highest frame rate to get a shot that is flattering to the horses. For this photograph, as with all my action shots, my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ICA5DM3.html?utm_term=Other&amp;utm_medium=Affiliate&amp;utm_campaign=Other&amp;utm_source=rflaid66949&amp;cvosrc=affiliate.66949\" target=\"_blank\">Canon 5D Mark III<\/a> camera is set to AI Servo focus, which tracks a subject right up to the moment of exposure.
