That filter is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ia100star.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NiSi Star Soft Astrophotography Filter<\/a>, and I had the chance to take it deep into the high desert of Utah and Arizona to test it out.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76989\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-76989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3N5A9098.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3N5A9098.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3N5A9098-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Nathan Lee Allen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Key Features<\/strong><strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0Astrophotography Filter<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before I walk through my overall experience and opinions on the NiSi astrophotography filter, let\u2019s talk about the details, specs, and features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is designed like a Graduated Neutral Density filter (GND) with the top \u2154 of the filter having the full \u201cstar soft\u201d effect and the bottom \u2153 is clear. This allows for the foreground to not be affected if you shooting your foreground at night through multiple exposures and photo stacking.<\/li>\n<li>NiSi claims no loss of light when shooting with this astrophotography filter, and offers a neutral tone with no added color cast.<\/li>\n<li>It is available in two sizes: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ia100star.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100x150mm<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ia150star.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">150x170mm.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>It is compatible with any NiSi filter holder that fits a 100mm or 150mm filter width with a thickness of 2mm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that the NiSi Star Soft Astrophotography Filter looks like an intriguing and valuable filter on paper. Although, I was also a little skeptical how big of a difference it would actually make in the field. I know the reputation of NiSi, for making top-of-the-line, compact, durable filters but until I tested this filter under the stars, I couldn\u2019t be sold.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76988\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-76988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/CE5A5587.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/CE5A5587.jpg 825w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/CE5A5587-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Nathan Lee Allen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Out of the Box<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While first impressions don\u2019t mean much in regards to performance, NiSi certainly impressed right out of the gate. The filter is lightweight, yet thick and durable. It&#8217;s made with quality glass that can withstand drops in the field. It also comes with a beautiful, sleek, saddle brown leather carrying case with magnetic snaps. It feels as premium as the filter itself.<\/p>\n<p>The NiSi Star Soft Astrophotography filter paired perfectly with the NiSi V6 filter holder I used. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ianipv6enswk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NiSi filter holders<\/a> are simply designed yet very dependable when holding and adjusting filters. With a quick twist of the side knobs, I could raise or lower the filter to increase or reduce the filter effect in the frame.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>In the Field<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now, for the most important question: Does the NiSi Star Soft Astrophotography Filter live up to the hype? Does it \u00a0create much bigger and brighter stars, galaxies, and constellations? The answer is yes. It\u2019s a lens that can truly take your astrophotography to the next level.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the two images below. Both were shot on the same night, under the same conditions. The second image had the NiSi Star Soft Astrophotography Filter in use. It clearly has much more defined, brighter, and bolder stars. It was actually surprising to see how well this filter worked while not affecting the foreground. Both images were photographed outside of the Milky Way season, under a full moon. The NiSi Star Soft Astrophotography Filter still performed incredibly well. It showed a dramatic difference compared to shooting without it. Despite the poor astrophotography conditions, this filter truly shined under the stars.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After testing the NiSi Star Soft Astrophotography Filter in Arizona and Utah, it lived up to its lofty expectations.\u00a0If you\u2019re a photographer that is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/astrophotography-the-gear-tips-you-need-to-photograph-the-night-sky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> focused on astrophotography<\/a>, this filter is a tool that can take your images to the next level.
