Master photographers from Brassa\u00ef to Daid\u014d Moriyama have been drawn to the mystery and drama of the nocturnal landscape. But there some points to consider before heading out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/nighttime-is-the-right-time-for-fun-photos\/\">shooting at night<\/a>.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is an element of danger.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0G<\/span>o out with someone to watch your back or hang with another photographer. People also seem more amenable to being photographed when there are two photographers.<\/li>\n<li>Travel light. Don\u2019t carry a bag. Use\u00a0 a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Photography\/Photography-Bags-and-Cases\/Straps-and-Slings\/Camera-Straps?sel=Strap-Type_Wrist-Strap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> camera wrist strap<\/a>\u00a0to keep things small and tight. Also, don\u2019t forget an extra camera battery and extra batteries for your flash.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t carry anything or dress in anyway to attract attention. Don\u2019t wear clothing with graphics or logos on them.<\/li>\n<li>Remember to wear a good pair of shoes. You may be walking a lot!<\/li>\n<li>Carry some business cards. You never know when you might sell a print of someone you just photographed. My card has minimal personal information \u2014 only my name and my street photography website, which has a contact form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79498\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79498\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-79498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/HonkyTonk-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/HonkyTonk-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/HonkyTonk-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/HonkyTonk-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/HonkyTonk-2-256x256.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Honky Tonk,\u00a0Michael Ray Nott<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Cameras<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The equipment I use are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/isoa7cs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony a7C Camera<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/iso282.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">28mm f\/2 E-Mount Lens<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/sohvlf20m.html?origterm=sony+hvl-f20m+external+flash&amp;searchredirect=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony HVL-F20M External Flash<\/a>. I also like to shoot with my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/ircgr3n.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ricoh GRIII<\/a>, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/pxaf201fg.html?origterm=pentax+af201fg+p-ttl+flash&amp;searchredirect=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pentax AF201FG P-TTL flash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I shoot with the 28mm lens mainly because it&#8217;s traditionally used by many street photographers, and it&#8217;s what I started out with using the Ricoh GR system.\u00a0A 28mm lens has more\u00a0depth of field so your photos are sharp and in-focus.\u00a0Plus, an added benefit\u00a0is that at 28mm it makes me get closer to the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Try using the flash, hand-held, to gain control over where the light is coming from. For any kind of street photography, day or night, your shutter speed needs to be fast enough to capture and freeze motion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Without Flash<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In average dark conditions, start with setting shutter speed to 1\/500, aperture at f\/2.8, and ISO 2500.\u00a0In urban areas where I wander at night, there is plenty of ambient light to shoot without a flash. Crank up the ISO, 3500 or higher, this will add grain to give your images a dramatic gritty feel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Many times, I will stake out a spot where the light is good and wait for the actors to step onto my stage.<\/p>\n<h3><b>With Flash<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p>I mainly use flash for close-up street portraiture but I don\u2019t want things to be<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>blown-out. Dial down the flash compensation to less flash output.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>A place to start for settings while using a flash is shutter speed 1\/60, aperture f\/3.5, ISO 100.\u00a0On a typical night I shoot about half with flash and without flash. Using a flash can be quite startling to people, so I typically will ask permission. I tend to try many different things on any given night.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Give emotional immediacy to images by letting imperfections happen. Blur, light traces, and darkness will reinforce the nighttime realism.<\/p>\n<p>As for your demeanor in the street, play around with two opposite extremes \u2014 being a ghost or being a personable, talkative extrovert.\u00a0I live in Nashville and the late night downtown honky-tonk-party-zone is a gold mine of street shooting. Around midnight, people have loosened up and are more amenable to having their picture taken. Many times, when they will see me with a camera they will yell, \u201cPaparazzi! Take our picture!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><b>Things to Look for Street Photography at Night:<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Neon lights<\/li>\n<li>Chaotic action<\/li>\n<li>Figures in silhouettes<\/li>\n<li>Reflections<\/li>\n<li>Interesting weather conditions<\/li>\n<li>Compelling faces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Safety<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Always be aware of your surroundings. Don\u2019t wander into any dead ends or engage with unbalanced people.\u00a0I travel with a buddy who acts as my bodyguard and, more importantly, is an excellent spotter. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Happy nocturnal shooting!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When night falls a raw, gritty world is revealed.
