Our eyes can see a broader range of brightness (dynamic range) than any sensor, so it might be difficult to portray what we envision with a single exposure.\u00a0In such situations, you might need to \u201cbracket\u201d the exposure by taking multiple shots as various exposure values, then blend them in an editing software.\u00a0Not long ago, this was a tedious, manual process.\u00a0More recently, it has been automated by many software including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop-lightroom.html?sdid=KKTJE&amp;mv=search&amp;ef_id=CjwKCAiA6Y2QBhAtEiwAGHybPYfVKICbtS09azGgBvZEmiI29pcw5XiADt_4ug3HdAzuKN7iYNtalRoCohQQAvD_BwE%253AG%253As&amp;s_kwcid=AL%213085%213%21561059871788%21e%21%21g%21%21lightroom%211712238382%2167643557900&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA6Y2QBhAtEiwAGHybPYfVKICbtS09azGgBvZEmiI29pcw5XiADt_4ug3HdAzuKN7iYNtalRoCohQQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lightroom<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/abccpwm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Photoshop<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This method is also often referred to as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/what-is-composite-photography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">composite photography<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"838\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Highlight-Glow-838x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Highlight-Glow-838x1024.jpg 838w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Highlight-Glow-245x300.jpg 245w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Highlight-Glow.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Mahesh Thapa<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"highlight-glow-orton-effect\"><strong>Highlight Glow (Orton Effect)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A highlight glow can make a landscape image look magical or ethereal.\u00a0When applied to portraits, it can hide some imperfections and smooth out skin textures.\u00a0It\u2019s sometimes referred to as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/how-to-create-dreamy-photos-using-the-orton-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orton effect<\/a>. The trick to this effect is to apply it with a subtle hand.\u00a0It is easy to go overboard when first starting out.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s my advice:\u00a0 Try it out. Step away for a few minutes. Come back to the image.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it looks \u201coverdone\u201d, then try again and repeat. This serves as an excellent starting point for this style, if you\u2019re unfamiliar.\u00a0It doesn\u2019t work very well for all photographs but is worth experimenting with and adjusting to taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Montage-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Montage-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Montage-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Montage.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Mahesh Thapa<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"montage-collage\"><strong>Montage (Collage)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a group of images that tells a story or has a similar theme, it might be more impactful to present them as a collage. You don\u2019t have to show them in simple square or rectangular frames.\u00a0Instead, different-shaped crops and partial crops can be visually effective.\u00a0One of my favorite apps to make eye catching collages is Unfold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The above suggestions are simply that \u2014 suggestions.\u00a0They are a starting point for you to establish your own unique look.\u00a0Consider combining several photo editing styles to add further diversity and distinctness. You may also want to look at other people\u2019s work for some inspiration.
