It is about sharing our message and our vision with an international audience. Emma Broyles will have an incredibly important platform to share her mission and message this year as she was recently crowned Miss America 2022. I was invited to do her very first photoshoot as Miss America 2022. Now, I will be sharing some tips for successful content creation as I worked this talented woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"preparing-for-the-photoshoot\"><strong>Preparing for the Photoshoot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In preparing our shoot together, I spoke with Emma and representatives of the Miss America competition to figure out what our visual goals were for the shoot. Thankfully, they provided flexibility and encouraged me to steer away from anything \u201ctraditionally pageant.\u201d Instead, we focused on creating images that were fresh, modern, and elevated. We aimed for a mix of fashion and portrait, so the photos could be used on the cover of various magazines for the organization and future promotions of Emma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My portrait work is often a mix of contemporary personal branding with fashion influences \u2014 both in the styling and the lighting. After our chat, I decided to divide the shoot into three main concepts: warm tones, timeless black and white, and ethereal high key. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all of these shots, I used my go-to camera and lens combo: the <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/JxzdE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canon R5<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/q74XY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canon 24-105mm 4.0 lens<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/brands\/Canon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adorama<\/a> also provided Emma with a <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/Q14Ra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canon EOS R <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/jWOVxb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canon RF 24-70mm 2.8 lens<\/a> to use for her own content creation, and I showed her some of my favorite features. Find Your Voice Why are you a content creator and what do you have that is unique to share with the world. Don\u2019t just copy other creators\u2026 find your own voice and an audience that shares your passions and values. 2. Be Consistent Create content consistently but don\u2019t burn yourself out! If you set unrealistic expectations you\u2019ll want to give up and give in! 3. Learn Your Gear and New Technology Gear can be a powerful tool to help you do your job\u2026 and do it with ease! Learn how to use the gear you have, including new technologies like exposure simulation, face and eye-tracking, and more that will help you film yourself! 4. More Expensive Doesn\u2019t Mean Better Successful content creators may be flashy with all the gear, gadgets, and expensive tools they use to do their job. I promise it isn\u2019t necessary! Do your research, figure out what you need your gear to achieve, and invest in what you NEED. Spending too much money will put you in a bind and add extra unnecessary stress! 5. Learn Lighting Essentials Lighting can be the difference between a video looking \u2018thrown together\u2019 or, professional. When someone wants something elegant but also welcoming, these tones are my go-to. I have a variety of canvas backgrounds and seamless paper to give me some variation between subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0269-a-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0269-a-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0269-a-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0269-a.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"lighting\"><strong>Lighting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For this image, I used a <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/KNZ5a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Westcott Scrim Jim 8x8ft<\/a> flat on the frame to create extremely soft and flattering lighting. This scrim was lit with a <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/4AdQn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Profoto 1x4ft Strip Softbox<\/a>. Because of the large size of the scrim, I was able to evenly light the entire scene. Even though the subject was close to the background, you can see there is (almost) no shadow because of the softness of the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0297.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0297.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0297-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I added a 1x4ft strip softbox below to fill in the shadows and create more catchlights in the eyes. I used this light very subtly so that I wouldn\u2019t completely flatten out the sculpting of the main light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"setup-2-timeless-black-and-white\"><strong>Setup 2: Timeless Black and White<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"concept-1\"><strong>Concept<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A timeless and sculpted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/how-to-take-black-and-white-portraits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">portrait in black and white<\/a> is a great way to create an image that is elegant and lets your subject\u2019s beauty speak for itself. Because the Miss America competition is a long-standing tradition, I decided that a classically simple portrait would be a good fit. The concept is elegant and would allow an opportunity to include some timeless styling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0676-a-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0676-a-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0676-a-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0676-a.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"lighting-1\"><strong>Lighting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For this scene, I have the subject on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/brands\/Savage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/9ZeX3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Savage Universal Fashion Gray<\/a><\/a> background with <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/JAyMe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">L\/XL Umbrella with Diffusion<\/a> to the left of the frame. This creates beautifully soft light to illuminate the entire subject with a flattering and sculpting light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, a white V-flat was added to the right of the frame to help lift up (lighten) the shadows. This is by bouncing some of the light from the umbrella back toward the subject. A second V-flat \u2014 this time, black \u2014 was added to the left of the frame. This was used to block some of the umbrella\u2019s light and prevent it from hitting the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0780-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0780-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0780-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0780-1-825x465.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you take a look at the final shot, you can see that the background on both sides of the subject is a bit darker. This creates the look of a glow behind her, and a natural vignette caused by the lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"setup-3-ethereal-high-key\"><strong>Setup 3: Ethereal High Key<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"concept-2\"><strong>Concept<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Who doesn\u2019t want to wear a crown and feel like a princess? This setup was meant to lean into the princess feel and create lighting that is dreamy and soft. Shooting on white would give the subject a lot of graphic design and layout opportunities. Furthermore, this dress is a perfect mix of princess, pageant, and high fashion!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"855\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0940-a-855x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0940-a-855x1024.jpg 855w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0940-a-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_0940-a.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"lighting-2\"><strong>Lighting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This lighting is a bit more complex. In order to achieve a soft glowing light, we bounced two strobes (no modifiers) into a white background. Then, in front of that, we positioned our <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/KNZ5a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Westcott Scrim Jim<\/a>. This time, it is acting as a background <em>and<\/em> main light. The scrim behind the subject would create a pure white background and beautiful, wrapping highlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_1020.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_1020.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_1020-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What about lighting the subject\u2019s face? For this scene, we placed the subject in a box of light by using <a href=\"https:\/\/adorama.rfvk.net\/djdBq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Two White V-Flats<\/a> to surround the subject. These V-Flats would catch all the light from the scrim and bounce it back to the subject. This creates extraordinarily flat\/soft light. We also used a piece of plexiglass on the floor to create a beautiful reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"839\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_1002-a-839x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_1002-a-839x1024.jpg 839w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_1002-a-246x300.jpg 246w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Lindsay_Adler_Emma_Broyles_1002-a.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Lindsay Adler<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"final-thoughts\"><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, we created images that are fresh, modern, and with a bit of a fashion edge.
