The Zoom F8 has all the features of a professional field recorder and it is less than one third the cost of competitive devices. I can\u2019t wait to open the box and put this unit into action. \n\t\t\tpackage. Sliding off the box sleeve and removing
\n\t\t\tsome protective padding reveals the Zoom F8
\n\t\t\tand AC power adapter in custom foam
\n\t\t\tpackaging. Underneath the foam is a cardboard
\n\t\t\ttray containing documentation and accessories.
\n\t\t\tSome standout features of the Zoom F8 include
\n\t\t\tflexible power options, large file storage, accurate
\n\t\t\ttime code, and onboard limiters. Additionally, you
\n\t\t\tcan use your iOS mobile device over Bluetooth to
\n\t\t\tfully control the Zoom F8. This enables game
\n\t\t\tchanging control and monitoring capabilities.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

In this photo we can see the cardboard accessory
\n\t\t\ttray and all the contents. At the top of the image
\n\t\t\tis the camera mount bracket. This allows you to
\n\t\t\tsafely mount the Zoom F8 to your favorite
\n\t\t\tcamera through the 1\/4\u201d 20 threaded bolt. The
\n\t\t\ttwo cables are TA3 mini-XLR to XLR. These
\n\t\t\tallow you to connect the mini-XLR main outs of
\n\t\t\tthe F8 to monitors or any other unit. In the plastic
\n\t\t\tsleeve we can see the owners manual and
\n\t\t\tadditional documentation. There are no SD cards
\n\t\t\tor batteries included. You can purchase a bundle
\n\t\t\tpackage<\/a> ($1,149.98) that adds a protective field
\n\t\t\tcase designed by Zoom specifically for the F8.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

This is a close up of the included 12 volt AC
\n\t\t\tadapter. The adapter allows you to power the F8
\n\t\t\tfrom a regular wall outlet when you are using it in
\n\t\t\ta stationary situation. When out in the field, a 4-
\n\t\t\tpin Hirose connector allows the use of external 9-
\n\t\t\t16 volt DC battery packs. 8 AA batteries provide
\n\t\t\tinternal power. The F8 can switch power sources
\n\t\t\tfrom a DC battery pack to the AA batteries at a
\n\t\t\tuser-defined voltage level for uninterrupted
\n\t\t\trecording. The F8 will run on standard alkaline
\n\t\t\tAA batteries. If you change a setting in the menu
\n\t\t\tyou can use rechargeable AA batteries such as
\n\t\t\tlithium or nickel metal hydride.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The F8 comes with a plethora of documentation.
\n\t\t\tThere is the operation manual, warrantee
\n\t\t\tinformation, instructions on how to connect to
\n\t\t\tiOS, camera mount instructions, and a list of
\n\t\t\toptional accessories. Also included is download
\n\t\t\tinformation and access codes for full versions of
\n\t\t\tCubase LE and Wavelab LE. Both applications
\n\t\t\tcome free with the purchase of the F8. Included
\n\t\t\twith the documentation are installation and set up
\n\t\t\tguides for Cubase LE and Wavelab LE.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Here we see front panel of the Zoom F8 as well
\n\t\t\tas the dark blue aluminum chassis. The F8 is
\n\t\t\tequipped with onboard limiters designed to
\n\t\t\tprovide overload protection. Limiting can be
\n\t\t\tapplied to all 8 channels simultaneously at full
\n\t\t\tresolution, with 10dB of headroom and controls
\n\t\t\tfor setting threshold, attack, and release. The F8
\n\t\t\tprovides eight discrete inputs with locking Neutrik
\n\t\t\tXLR\/TRS combo connectors. Each input has a
\n\t\t\tdedicated gain control knob, a 6-segment LED
\n\t\t\tlevel meter, Record Ready, and PFL switch. It is
\n\t\t\thard to believe there are so many channels in
\n\t\t\tsuch a small device. In the next photo I added a
\n\t\t\tquarter and a ruler for size reference.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The F8’s onboard mixer enables flexible signal
\n\t\t\trouting from all inputs to all outputs, either pre- or
\n\t\t\tpost-fader, with user-adjustable level, pan, and
\n\t\t\tinput\/output delay. The F8 also provides highpass
\n\t\t\tfiltering to reduce the sound of wind and
\n\t\t\tother noise, plus phase inversion and Mid-Side
\n\t\t\tdecoding. The main metal rotary knob is
\n\t\t\tsubstantial, tight, and smooth. This makes menu
\n\t\t\tnavigation a breeze. The F8\u2019s menu is laid out
\n\t\t\tintuitively and has a simple file structure.
\n\t\t\tCataloging is straightforward, with extensive
\n\t\t\tmetadata (both BWF and iXML), which can be
\n\t\t\tentered directly on the F8 or with the Zoom F8
\n\t\t\tControl App.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Here we can see the right side of the F8. On the
\n\t\t\ttop left is the Hirose connector for external
\n\t\t\tbattery packs. To the right of that is a USB port
\n\t\t\twhich allows for firmware updates and file
\n\t\t\ttransfer. The USB also allows the F8 to be used
\n\t\t\tas an 8-in\/4-out desktop audio interface for multitrack
\n\t\t\trecording on your computer. SD slots one
\n\t\t\tand two are top right and top center You can
\n\t\t\trecord on two SD\/SDHC\/SDXC cards (up to 512
\n\t\t\tGB each) simultaneously, allowing you to
\n\t\t\tinstantly backup or split recordings. For example,
\n\t\t\tsave a surround sound mix on one card and a
\n\t\t\tstereo mix on the other. Along the bottom are
\n\t\t\tXLR \/ TRS inputs one through four.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

This image shows us the left side of the F8. On
\n\t\t\tthe top left is the unbalanced 1\/8\u201d stereo minijack.
\n\t\t\tThis jack provides Sub Outs 1\/2 for
\n\t\t\tconnection to a camera. To the right is the 1\/4\u201d
\n\t\t\theadphone jack with a dedicated volume control
\n\t\t\ton the front face. The F8 comes with a 100 mW
\n\t\t\theadphone amp, allowing you to monitor in the
\n\t\t\tloudest environments. You can set headphone
\n\t\t\talert tones for low battery, recording start\/stop, or
\n\t\t\trecording errors. Top right and center are the
\n\t\t\tmini-XLR main outs for connection to mixers or
\n\t\t\tprocessors. Along the bottom are XLR \/ TRS
\n\t\t\tinputs five through eight.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

On the back face of the F8 we can find the jack
\n\t\t\tfor the AC power adapter located in the top left.
\n\t\t\tTo the right we find two standard BNC
\n\t\t\tconnectors, which allow for time code input and
\n\t\t\toutput. Accurate time code is the best way to
\n\t\t\tprecisely sync audio and video. The F8\u2019s state-ofthe-
\n\t\t\tart time code utilizes a precision oscillator
\n\t\t\tthat generates time code at 0.2 ppm accuracy.
\n\t\t\tThe F8 supports all standard dropframe and nondrop
\n\t\t\tformats, and can jam sync to time code
\n\t\t\tbeing provided by external devices.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Behind the word \u201cZOOM\u201d on the back face is the
\n\t\t\tAA battery compartment. The tape in the picture
\n\t\t\tabove slightly obscures a flathead screw that
\n\t\t\tkeeps the battery compartment sealed while in
\n\t\t\tuse. On the right side, a small rubber cover can
\n\t\t\tbe removed to reveal a 10-pin connector that
\n\t\t\tenables the use of Zoom mic capsules. You can
\n\t\t\tadd an optional extension cable for remote Zoom
\n\t\t\tmic positioning. The Zoom F8 also has a built-in
\n\t\t\tslate mic and a variable frequency slate tone
\n\t\t\tgenerator to confirm levels.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

A quarter has been placed ontop of the F8 for
\n\t\t\tsize reference. The Zoom F8 has a compact and
\n\t\t\tlight weight aluminum chassis. The whole device
\n\t\t\tweighs just about two pounds (without batteries).
\n\t\t\tThe F8 has some of Zoom\u2019s finest mic preamps
\n\t\t\tto date, featuring an exteremely low noise floor (-
\n\t\t\t127 dBu EIN) and high gain (up to 75 db, with +4
\n\t\t\tdB line inputs). Phantom power (+24V\/+48V) can
\n\t\t\tbe turned on and off for each input individually.
\n\t\t\tThe Zoom protects your work by periodically
\n\t\t\tsaving during recording. This provides an extra
\n\t\t\tlevel of protection in the event of power loss or
\n\t\t\taccidental SD removal.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Here we can see the F8 fired up and receiving
\n\t\t\tsignals in a studio enviornment. On the right, we
\n\t\t\thave the gain knobs for each of the eight tracks.
\n\t\t\tThe red light indicates that the track is record
\n\t\t\tready and the segmented LED\u2019s above the knobs
\n\t\t\tshow input level. Out in the field, it\u2019s important to
\n\t\t\tbe able to quickly check levels as you\u2019re
\n\t\t\trecording. The LCD screen on the F8 makes it
\n\t\t\tsimple to see your meter levels. Any combination
\n\t\t\tof tracks and\/or outs can be monitored through
\n\t\t\tthe headphones. Signals can be freely routed to
\n\t\t\tthe left and\/or right headphone channels, pre- or
\n\t\t\tpost-fader, and the headphone output can be
\n\t\t\tswitched to mono.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Sound professionals don\u2019t always have the
\n\t\t\tbenefit of clean and well-lit work environments.
\n\t\t\tThe F8 can combat dark dusty rooms or direct
\n\t\t\tsunlight by providing fully adjustable LEDs and
\n\t\t\tLCD. In the menu, you can adjust the brightness
\n\t\t\tof the indicator LEDs from 0 to 60. The 2.4 inch
\n\t\t\tfull-color backlit LCD also has brightness controls
\n\t\t\twithin the menu. The LCD can even be set to a
\n\t\t\tmonochromatic mode for maximum contrast and
\n\t\t\tvisibility. The Zoom can record a total of 10
\n\t\t\ttracks. This includes 8 input channels and a
\n\t\t\tstereo mix track. This allows you to
\n\t\t\tsimultaneously record stereo and surround
\n\t\t\tsound.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The F8\u2019s dual-channel recording mode allows you
\n\t\t\tto create safety tracks on inputs 1-4, each with
\n\t\t\tindependent level, limiting, delay, phase
\n\t\t\tinversion, and high-pass filtering. Setting the
\n\t\t\tpreamp of the safety track to a lower gain will
\n\t\t\tgive you protection against clips or distortion that
\n\t\t\tcould ruin your primary track. The Zoom F8 also
\n\t\t\thas a pre-record function that allows you to
\n\t\t\tcapture up to 6 seconds of audio before you hit
\n\t\t\tthe record button. The feature-packed Zoom F8 is
