In some ways it improved upon the first. Yet Romero\u2019s \u201cGodfather\u201d of the zombie genre still has a special place in most horror fans hearts. Snyder managed to move beyond this, having shown a strong affection for the medium of the graphic novel by adapting Frank Miller\u2019s battle of Thermopylae epic \u201c300\u201d and the thought-to-be-unfilmable Alan Moore masterpiece \u201cWatchmen.\u201d Observing this trajectory, it should come as no surprise that Snyder would eventually bring his vision of Superman to the big screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 725px; height: 552px;\" src=\"\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/batman-vs-superman-affleck-snyder.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"rtecenter\">Ben Affleck as Batman and director Zack Snyder on the set of &#8220;Batman v. But to everyone\u2019s surprise it would include another popular DC Comic character: Bruce Wayne, the billionaire orphan who would prey on Gotham City\u2019s underworld under the guise of the intimidating Batman. At the 2013 San Diego Comic Con, actor Harry Lennix read this out loud to an eager audience of fans, \u201c I want you to remember, Clark\u2026 in all the years to come\u2026 in your most private moments\u2026 I want you to remember\u2026 my hand\u2026 at your throat\u2026 I want\u2026 you to remember\u2026 the man who beat you.\u201d Having quoted directly from a page out of another influential Frank Miller title \u201cThe Dark Knight Returns,\u201d Lennix kicked off an announcement that would be the topic of speculation for the past three years. \u201cBatman v. Superman.\u201d So it\u2019s not \u201cMan of Steel 2?\u201d Will this be a direct adaption of \u201cDark Knight\u201d (which features an aging Bruce Wayne returning to the cape and cowl while acclimating to a future Gotham riddled with crime. In the process, he has to go up against Clark Kent aka Superman, who is now a government shill and must act in opposition to Batman)? Warner Bros then announced that other DC characters such as Wonder Woman and Aquaman will get their chance to shine and would not just appear in \u201cBatman v. Superman.\u201c They will get their respective stand-alone projects and co-star in the anticipated \u201cJustice League\u201d film. So all roads lead to this just as \u201cIron Man,\u201d \u201cCaptain America\u201d and \u201cThor\u201d led to the all star \u201cAvengers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(An aborted attempt was made to get \u201cJustice League\u201d on the screen. Tentatively titled \u201cWorld\u2019s Finest,\u201d it would have been directed by \u201cMad Max: Fury Road\u2019s\u201d George Miller)<\/p>\n<p>Within the past couple of decades, the Batman character fared much better than Superman when it came to the Hollywood production machine. In the late 70s, Richard Donner\u2019s \u201cSuperman\u201d was an unqualified success that not only brought Christopher Reeve to public awareness, it also begat three sequels that diminished in quality concluding with the much derided \u201cSuperman IV: The Quest for Peace.\u201d Only two years after the release of that last film, Tim Burton unveiled his take on \u201cBatman.\u201d Heavily influenced by Miller\u2019s dark take on \u201cthe world\u2019s greatest detective,\u201d \u201cBatman\u201d enjoyed three sequels as well. And then the concept was rebooted for Chris Nolan\u2019s popular trilogy \u201cBatman Begins,\u201d \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d and \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises.\u201d The numbers had barely cooled on Nolan\u2019s \u201cRises\u201d before the same production company decided to take another stab at Superman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 725px; height: 484px;\" src=\"\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/Henry_Cavill_Batman_v_Superman_article_story_large.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"rtecenter\">Henry Cavill as Superman. Image courtesy of Warner Bros.<\/h6>\n<p>A previous entry set within the Chris Reeve led series \u2013 the Brian Singer directed \u201cSuperman Returns\u201d \u2013 earned decent numbers but strongly divided critics and fans. To such an extent that people forget it was actually a fairly successful title when it was released. If anything, it might have been preferable to what could have been a Tim Burton directed \u201cSuperman Lives,\u201d a film that has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GkRxXicAuYo\">its own fascinating history<\/a> considering it was never made. So when the rumblings via the gossip mill began littering the internet over a new Superman movie, heavy hitters McG and Michael Bay were somehow closely associated with this development. But it was Zack Snyder who won the coveted stewardship while Nolan agreed to tag along as advisor to this new take on the caped crusader.<\/p>\n<p>The result was 2013\u2019s \u201cMan of Steel.\u201d Like \u201cSuperman Returns,\u201d it divided critics and fans. But its financial success paved way for promised sequels. Which is how we end up with \u201cBatman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.\u201d Take one successful character and team him up with another from the same literary brand. How could you go wrong? As to whether it succeeds or fails from a critical standpoint remains to be seen, but \u201cBatman v. Superman\u201d will include the third iteration\/interpretation of Batman within a twenty-seven year stretch (or fifth if you want to include the casting of Val Kilmer and George Clooney. However their characterizations appeared in direct sequels to \u201cBatman\u201d and \u201cBatman Returns\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 725px; height: 254px;\" src=\"\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/Former-Batmans.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"rtecenter\">Previous cinematic incarnations of Batman. Images courtesty of Warner Bros.<\/h6>\n<p>While Ben Affleck assumes the mantle once worn by Christian Bale, Michael Keaton and Adam West, UK actor Henry Cavill returns as Superman. Rounding out the cast, Gal Gadot guides Wonder Woman to her cinematic debut as well as Jason Momoa (of \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d fame) as Aquaman. We expect an interesting spin on Superman arch nemesis Lex Luthor provided by Jesse Eisenberg. And hope to see the return of Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White. But the most intriguing bit of casting (for this author anyway) is the introduction of Oscar winner Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne\u2019s loyal guardian and servant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 725px; height: 463px;\" src=\"\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/zdeyahgmlqb2mshq7tcv.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"rtecenter\">Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Image courtesy of Warner Bros.<\/h6>\n<p>Shot digitally on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adoramarentals.com\/p-~arrialexa\/arri-alexa-classic-ev-camera-kit\">Arri Alexa<\/a>, \u201cBatman v. Superman\u201d uses locations as diverse as Detroit, Michigan and Deming, New Mexico. Cinematographer Larry Fong has worked with Zack Snyder consistently since the 2006 \u201c300.\u201d He has considerable experience lensing blockbuster films thanks to collaborations with Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams. But in terms of production, already \u201cB v S\u201d has endured speculation over whether Warner Bros. is concerned as to how it will play with general audiences. Writers like Hitfix\u2019s Drew McWeeny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hitfix.com\/the-dartboard\/batman-v-superman-could-dcs-entire-slate-be-in-jeopardy-fandemonium\">published this controversial report<\/a> fearing that the ballyhooed \u201cJustice League\u201d could be in trouble because of this. \u201cMan of Steel\u201d polarized viewers. While some enjoyed the latest iteration and its spectacular special effects, others felt betrayed by the dark tone, unmotivated acts of violence on Superman\u2019s part and, well, general issues with the script itself. Screenwriter David Goyer (who also contributed to \u201cBatman v. Superman\u2019s\u201d screenplay) has a rich history with comic book development and wrote the Marvel adaptations \u201cBlade,\u201d \u201cBlade II\u201d and wrote\/directed the third film in the series. He also contributed to Nolan\u2019s \u201cDark Knight\u201d trilogy so he certainly is no stranger to the world of Batman. Unfortunately, he is often accused of the not-well-received direction of \u201cMan of Steel.\u201d Yes, the film was fiscally successful. Obviously it was. Otherwise Warner Bros would not have initiated an entire franchise as a result. But opinion was divisive enough on \u201cMan of Steel\u201d that should \u201cB v S\u201d follow suit, the general public might take a \u201cfool me twice\u201d stance.<\/p>\n<p>It also doesn\u2019t help that Warner Bros. rolled out three trailers promoting \u201cB v S\u201d that vary wildly in tone. Is it dark and brooding? Does it err on the side of camp? Does the appearance of a certain super villain near the end reek of lazy cgi creation and therefore kill the effectiveness of its finale? Or will this be an epic, conflation of all tones and therefore become the superhero flick to end all superhero flicks?
