There are some constants. Although \u2014 being a general assignment photographer \u2014 my jobs have ranged from me shooting alone with a couple cameras, to movie-scale productions with a full crew. Adaptability is just as important as any piece of equipment in your camera bag.&nbsp;With that being said, let\u2019s get into what gear I usually have in my camera bag as a storytelling photographer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>M<\/strong>y Cameras<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"NKZ9\"  class=\"west_sku_post\" data=\"NKZ9\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been a Nikon shooter for my whole career, and I\u2019m very honored to be a Nikon Ambassador. At this point, I shoot with a&nbsp;<strong>Nikon Z 9 Camera<\/strong>&nbsp;all the way. It\u2019s been a huge and rapid change for me. Four years ago, in my camera locker, I had eight DSLR style cameras. Now, I just have three Z 9 cameras. This camera is a monster. It\u2019s extremely fast and appropriate to any job I might get. I can shoot RAW in the studio at ISO 64, or take it in the field and shoot an excellent JPEG at 120 frames per second. It&#8217;s high-speed sync capability and continuous view of your subject is huge. I shot the Tokyo Olympics on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/inkd6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nikon D6 <\/a>cameras, which have great resolution and phenomenal auto focus. The question I ask before bringing something along on a job is, \u201cIs it useful?\u201d For me, the&nbsp;<strong>Nikkor S series 24-70mm f2.8 Lens<\/strong>&nbsp;is just that. It covers the waterfront for a photographer such as myself. I can do environmental portraiture with it and use it for scene setters, or what we called in my newspaper days as a \u201cgeneral view.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMPOSSIBLE_050.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMPOSSIBLE_050.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMPOSSIBLE_050-300x196.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Joe McNally, Nikon Ambassador.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>M<\/strong>ost &#8220;Exotic&#8221; Lens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"NK2002U\"  class=\"west_sku_post\" data=\"NK2002U\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I will never ditch my tried-and-true&nbsp;<strong>Nikkor 200mm f2 Lens<\/strong>. It\u2019s an F mount lens but works perfectly on my Z 9 cameras via the FTZ adapter. The lens is razor sharp. In fact, it might be the sharpest telephoto I\u2019ve ever used. Drop the AF cursor on the eye, and the DOF drop is stunningly beautiful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"991\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC2989.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC2989.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC2989-300x297.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC2989-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Joe McNally, Nikon Ambassador.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">Other<\/span> Glass<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Other lenses I use often are the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/nk1424afsu.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nikkor S Series 14-24mm f2.8 Lens<\/a><\/strong>, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/nk7020028.html\"><strong>Nikkor<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>S Series 70-200mm f2.8 Lens<\/strong><\/a>. If I get beyond that first tier, I will go with a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/nkz5012.html\">Nikkor S Series 50mm f1.2 Lens<\/a><\/strong>, and perhaps a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/sg10528mnkak.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">105mm f2.8 Macro Lens<\/a><\/strong>. Within this grouping, I can shoot just about any job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Longer Glass Options<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I am absolutely a fan of long glass. The power and compression of long lenses can transform a scene. And, if I feel like I want to shoot long glass for a particular reason, I will often time experiment with over-lensing a situation. In other words, if you think you might want to go big, try winging it with something even bigger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"NK80056FEDU\"  class=\"west_sku_post\" data=\"NK80056FEDU\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me explain. I brought a&nbsp;<strong>Nikkor 800mm f5.6 Lens<\/strong>&nbsp;to Greco-Roman wrestling at the Rio Olympics. This lens was way too long. But what I wanted was to express the human architecture of wrestling. Many, many other photographers were there, obviously, so in a quixotic attempt to do something different, I over-lensed. The price you pay for this is you will miss the crucial pin or throw. You will simply be too tight for that kind of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/JM2_0434.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/JM2_0434.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/JM2_0434-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Joe McNally, Nikon Ambassador.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the same thing with an 800mm look at the hurdles. It\u2019s great graphically, but it\u2019s too much lens to get much of anything at the finish line, which is where the critical news of the day happens. You must make a choice, pending your mission. Can you freelance this a bit? Or do you have to go with the \u201cright\u201d lens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/JM2_7496.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88649\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/JM2_7496.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/JM2_7496-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Joe McNally, Nikon Ambassador.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t tell you how much I love the 800mm focal length and, now with new materials and construction, the&nbsp;Nikkor S Series 800mm Lens&nbsp;is extremely hand-holdable. For a slice of the city from the air, it\u2019s amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"562\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Unknown-5.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Unknown-5.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Unknown-5-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Unknown-5-825x465.jpeg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Joe McNally, Nikon Ambassador.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And, the beautiful thing is, you don\u2019t have to go to 800mm. Nikon, for instance, makes a super light and sharp&nbsp;<strong>F Mount 300mm f4 Lens&nbsp;<\/strong>that is smaller than the 70-200mm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>My Lighting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I have been known to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/nksb5000u.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nikon speedlights<\/a>. More specifically, the radio-controlled SB-5000 units are phenomenally good.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/JM81693-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/JM81693-3.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/JM81693-3-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Joe McNally, Nikon Ambassador.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"PP901231\"  class=\"west_sku_post\" data=\"PP901231\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But, over the last several years as jobs have demanded more power, I am working mostly with Profoto lights. I use the A10 units. These lights have the beauty of being a very powerful, smart hot-shoe style light and doubling as a commander for other lights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"PP901192\"  class=\"west_sku_post\" data=\"PP901192\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I also depend relentlessly on the B10X Plus units. I supplement their punch with the new Profoto A2, which I refer to as the soda can light due to its small size and shape. Of course, for bigger jobs, there is the Pro-11 and Pro heads which \u2014 simply put\u2014 is the best engineered big flash in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/PHOTOWORLD_211.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/PHOTOWORLD_211.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/PHOTOWORLD_211-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/PHOTOWORLD_211-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/PHOTOWORLD_211-256x256.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Joe McNally, Nikon Ambassador.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>C<\/strong>amera Supports<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been using<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/brands\/Gitzo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Gitzo<\/a> forever. They can be an expensive piece of gear, but their products can&nbsp;&nbsp;stick with you for literally your whole career.
