This is the first time a camera has featured the OM SYSTEM brand name. On the outside, that\u2019s \u2014 more or less \u2014 the only thing that seems to have changed from the previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/iomem5m3b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympus E-M5 Mark III Camera<\/a>. This also includes the camera&#8217;s excellent weather-sealed, freeze proof, dust proof, and (very) splash proof design. This increases to 7.5 stops if you pair the OM-5 with one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Photography\/Olympus~Lenses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M.Zuiko I.S Sync compatible lenses<\/a>. What that means in the real world is sharper photos, hand-held in lower light. It also means you can leave your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/l\/Photography\/Tripods-and-Supports\/Tripods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tripod<\/a> at home more often.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3>High Resolution Technology<\/h3>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>OM System cameras have always been big on computational photography, where the camera uses its processing power to merge multiple images. The OM-5 is a winner in this department as it gains a couple of neat features.<\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_89764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89764\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-89764\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/P9240764-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/P9240764-copy.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/P9240764-copy-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/P9240764-copy-825x465.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Gavin Hoey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>High resolution shot boosts the OM-5\u2019s resolution to 50 million pixels by taking a series of photos and merging the data. It all happens with a single click and \u2014 thanks to the improved image stabilization \u2014 it now has hand-held high resolution mode. It\u2019s a very neat trick that works seamlessly on reasonably static subjects like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/basic-landscape-photography-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">landscapes<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Live ND Mode and Starry Auto Focus<\/h3>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>The other use of this technology is found in Live ND. In this mode, the camera slows time to simulate the effect of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/the-ultimate-guide-to-neutral-density-filters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neutral density filter<\/a>. The OM-5 has the equivalent of an 16 or 4-stop ND filter, which you can use to blur moving water, clouds, traffic and so on.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_89765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89765\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-89765\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/P9250821-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/P9250821-copy.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/P9250821-copy-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/P9250821-copy-825x465.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Gavin Hoey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>There are some useful improvements in the OM-5 to help with focusing, including custom modes for AF points, manual focus assist, and improvements in face and eye detection for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adorama.com\/alc\/creative-portrait-photography-ideas-tips-and-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">portrait photographers<\/a>. But perhaps the most impressive is Starry Auto Focus. In this mode, the OM-5 can instantly focus on the stars, something that sounds easy but, in practice, is easy to get very wrong.<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<h3>New Video Features<\/h3>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>With the world of content creation expanding and changing all the time, almost everyone needs their stills camera to double as a video camera. No more twisting your head to the side to watch the footage or rotating it on your mobile device. The clips all come rotated in-camera, ready for vertical viewing.
